Every evening/night my bedroom emanates a dead animal smell. We already checked the attic for dead mice or any other critters and didn't find anythign but a crusty old lizard (which did not stink). I checked the closet and under the bed but we can not find the cause of the smell. We're also really baffled at how the smell only comes out at night. Last night my best friend came over and thought the smell was awful (I guess I've gotten used to it--I smell it for sure but I can deal with it). She thinks something is dead in the wall, btu if that's truw, how woudl I locate it and remove it???

1) Any ideas what is causing the smell?

2) Any ideas why the smell only comes out at ngiht?

Is your bedroom close to your laundry room? If so, go outside and check the dryer vent. Also check on the wall on the outside of your bedroom for any holes, cracks, crevices that an animal may have gotten into.

As to the smell only being out at night, Does the sun only hit the outer wall of your bedroom in the afternoon/evening? If so it may be heating the offending dead critter up to the point where it begins to stink. Things that stink smell worst when heated.

Now Dip - you know you're going to get some wisecracks about this.

Honestly, I'm baffled - unless it's a nocturnal animal and isn't dead - like a raccoon. Have you been able to pinpoint exactly where this aroma is located? I know you said your bedroom - but which part? Do you have a crawl space under the house and can anything get under there?

You might see about getting an exterminator in to check for you.

Dead rat/mouse in the wall. Did you check under the insulation in the attic?

It certainly could be a mole, but I think we need to assess!! laugh laugh this a little further...

When you checked the attic, were you able to see everything, or only what was not covered in insulation? Are there nooks and crannies you can't really get to?

Agree with DS that if you can't narrow down where its coming from, you probably should get an exterminator.

No crawl space and the exterior of the wall is fine. We did NOT check under the insulation in the attic--will let the bf know we shoudl check under there too. But the smell really is isolated to my bedroom only (which part exactly is a mystery).

My best friend swears if she brings her dog over that he'll find exactly where the smell is coming from. He's a big boisterous dog btu I may give in and have her bring him over.

Yeah, sounds like insulation might be your answer here.

Curious, if it is a dead animal in the attic under the insulation, shoudl the attic smell at night too?

If it's a dead animal, after a period of time, that smells going to go away. The dog idea isn't a bad one. They can at least give you an idea of where to look. Can you describe the smell? Do you have any pipes that run along your bedroom wall?

You would think so. As far as the smell only being at night, is there anything different at night-time that might contribute to this? Does your heat/air run more/less at night, etc?

Have you checked for dirty sweat socks under the bed? smile

I am not sure what kind of heating/cooling systems you have, but if there is duct work/vents, you may want to check there.

i had a squirrel die in my bedroom wall once...it was unmistakable where the smell was coming from (just put your nose up to the wall near the smell and you can tell when it's getting worse or better as you move around)

had some dude cut small space where i thought the smell was coming from...and behold...a decaying squirrel!

worst smell EVER! sick

the smell is no worse or less when the air or heat is running.

I'll check the attic under the insulation thsi weekend and see if I can get my friend's dog over to try to narrow where the smell is.

In the meantime, if you have any other ideas, let me know!

I had a dead bird in a rain spout once. Is there a rain spout outside your bedroom window?
