Good scary movies?

I just recently saw "Paranormal Activity". That was a scary movie...I was almost afraid to go to sleep after watching it. But I still like those scary movies! Anyone have any suggestions on some good ones? But NOT blood and gore, just ghostly and creepy. I have one other suggestion myself, though, and that's "The Changeling" (not the new movie, but the one with George C. Scott made in 1980.) Any other suggestions from anybody?

'The Changeling' with George C. Scott is my husband's favorite. Another one that we like is 'Hide and Seek' with Robert DiNero and Dakota Fanning. I also liked 'Skeleton Key' with Kate Hudson. Those aren't gory - just creepy at times.

"The Ring" really scared me. I don't think there was much blood or gore in that. I also like "Pan's Labarynth" (spelling is probably wrong) and "The Orphanage". Both are Guiermo Del Toro movies and have subtitles. They are very creepy.

My husband and I are huge horror movie fans and we have a whole collection of them. However, we *hate* the genre of torture horror (like "The Hostel") - we've never seen any of those and have no plans to.
Although my favorites are the 80's style slasher flicks (Halloween, Friday the 13th), I do like the non-bloody, creepy movies as well. "The Ring" was the one that creeped me out the most. I also agree with "Pan's Labyrinth" and "The Orphanage" - very good films.
We still haven't seen "Paranormal Activity" but plan on doing so this weekend.

Dazed, I completely agree with those movies! Love them.
My all-time fave remains The Shining.
Goreporn, IMO, has outlived its time. Hostel et al, while mildly entertaining, do nothing for me.

The Ring was good, we actually like The Grudge too but a lot of people thought it was weak. There is such a difference between "horror" and "thriller". And on top of that each of those have sub-genres. In horror you have slasher flicks and others and thrillers you have psycologicl thrillers. Depending on what you're into it's hard to say what's good or not. I would say a good genuine horror movie that has come out in the last few years was House of 1000 Corpses. One of the best thrillers, too me, was Paranormal Activity but I don't know how good it would be watching it at home. It was great in the theater. I would say the Blair Witch Project was one of the best psycological thrillers until you found out it wasn't true. I remember watching that opening night before we knew it was fake and it freaked me out. To me though, the best psycological thriller of all time is Silence of the Lambs.

I agree with Spivol about the Blair Witch Project being very scary when thought to be true.
I guess I liked how different it was than other movies and how it was filmed.
IMO, Criminal Minds occasionally has some of the scariest stuff on TV due to the serial killers that are tracked.

We watched Paranormal Activity at home on New Years Eve. Weren't impressed, but I'm sure it was much better in the theatre.
LOVE Criminal Minds . . .

Criminal Minds is good.
A favorite 'scary' movie - Silence of the Lambs. Hubby checked every window and door lock after watching that one.

You people do realize paranormal activity isn't true right?
That the director filmed it in his home for under like $15,000.00

I agree with Spivol about the Blair Witch Project being very scary when thought to be true. Nothing's happening, nothing's happening, something about a map, nothing's happening, there's a guy standing in a corner. It's over. A lot of people look pissed.Family Guy FTW!

Yeah, we know it's not true Spook. Well, at least I know it's not true. Watching it in the theater did make it better though. I think any movie in the theater is better though. Especially if you have a great crowd with you.

I had a film professor who insisted you didn't see the film if you didn't see it in the theater.
After watching the Wizard of Oz in a theater versus on TV my whole life, I can entirely agree with him.

Blair Witch was so NOT scary. The ending to "carrie" - now that's scary.

I was creeped out the first time I watched Blair Witch.
the ending to "Carrie" the book! Much creepier. Movie couldn't come close to the full effect!

Blair Witch was so NOT scary. The ending to "carrie" - now that's scary. This is why it's so hard to recommend scary movies to people. Everyone had different tastes to what they see as scary. IMO, Blair Witch, The Ring, The Grudge, and What Lies Beneath are the only movies to really creep me out. Can't wait to see Paranormal Activity, but my wife would never want to be even in the same house to watch it.

I thought that What Lies Beneath's score was what made it scary. It had a great musical suspense element.
