Why not ground all planes when we have a crash, until it is known precisely why the plane crashed?

out of the frying pan...
Why don't we just institute a policy of exaggerated yet ineffective and belated administrative reaction to all major events? Oh, wait....

This is one of those silly questions, but do any of you know what the moratorium actually covers?

it covers exploratory drilling on new rigs only, does not cover existing rigs that are currently drilling. In short, if you're already drilling you're fine, want to sink a new well, you're out of luck.

If you're ever unsure, just ask...

And an under-reported issue on this rig, when people ask "why don't they just dump it." Well, if they were to cover the well with waste material for stop the leak, they have effectively given up the lease on that location, and will not be allowed to redrill without acquiring a new lease. So, in short, our minerals management leases are causing them to let the oil leak while they try to fix it by a method that allows them to continue to operate the site.

I've heard as many as 60,000 will be impacted across the region, with another $75-100mm monthly in loss of economic impact...of course, those numbers come from groups that have a desire for it to stay open, so I don't know how valid they are.

this is funny, as I read an article in the paper this weekend where Obama was blasting the law about how bad it is. The article did a comparison to the federal law that is on the books versus the state law that just passed, and the federal law is much more stringent, has stiffer penalties, etc. The article said if Obama can't stomach the Arizona law, as he has stated, then how come he hasn't changed the federal law, one he can control...

the proiblem is, most people have no idea what either actually says, they just listen to an "unbiased" news guy to know what to think

Naw, I don't think he watches the news. I think he has someone tell him when to be upset. That person was on vacation when the gulf leak started for a month!

Salazar seeks to reimpose drilling moratorium
POSTED: 08:35 AM Wednesday, June 23, 2010
BY: The Associated Press
TAGS: Bill Tanner, deepwater drilling moratorium, Ken Salazar, Sean Parnell, Shell Oil Co.
WASHINGTON — Interior Secretary Ken Salazar says he will issue a new order imposing a moratorium on deepwater drilling after a federal judge struck down the existing one.

Salazar said in a statement Tuesday evening that the new order will contain additional information making clear why the six-month drilling pause was necessary in the wake of the Gulf oil leak. The judge in New Orleans who struck down the moratorium earlier in the day complained there wasn’t enough justification for it.

Salazar pointed to indications of inadequate safety precautions by industry on deepwater wells. He said he would issue a new order in the coming days showing that a moratorium is needed.

The White House also is appealing the judge’s ruling.

Meanwhile, Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell the decision to block to moratorium is “good for the nation.”

The ban followed an oil rig explosion and spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Offshore drilling in the Arctic Ocean was also delayed, a decision affecting Alaska and one an Interior Department spokeswoman says remains in effect.

Shell Oil was prepared to drill exploratory wells this summer in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas, and company spokesman Bill Tanner said the delay affects nearly 800 workers.

Parnell said that while the legal fight won’t put Alaskans to work this summer, the judge’s decision indicates companies can expect fair treatment

Between the lines
Is anyone else just absolutely shocked that any judge would step up on this and block the president?

Now, that's democracy!
