Not sure if anyone is familiar with the flight 427 crash that occurred outside Pittsburgh in 1994, but here is a truly interesting and somewhat shocking article regarding why it happened:

I knew 4 people on this flight and I always wondered what exactly happened.

Crazy stuff. Yes, I'm familiar with that crash - they had a special about it on TV recently... frown

I have a mild obsession with plane crashes (I read everything about them I can find, I watch every TV special on plane crashes, etc.) which started when I was a child and my grandpa rescheduled himself from a flight that ended up crashing horribly in 1987 (LOT 5055) because he wanted to come to my piano recital and decided to go the next day instead. eek

My husband's childhood friend, along with his parents and sister, died in the 1987 crash at the Detroit Airport (NWA 255). frown

Some scary stuff...

Interesting story. I started reading it and couldn't stop. It good that some people were relentless about getting to the bottom of the story. You just don't think as you're cruising along at 30,000 feet that something the size of a soda can could end your life in the next minute.

I found that article exceedingly interesting, and like you K, I couldn't stop reading it (my AADD seemed to have even waned while I read it.)

Agreed. And I couldn't believe that some people still didn't believe it when they showed exactly how that valve wouldn't work and do the exact opposite of what it was supposed to do when the proper conditions were present.

As stated above, I knew 4 people on that plane, and I took it a little personally to see why it happened.

One would wonder if the O-Ring issue was like this hydraulic pump issue in that it only failed in very extreme and limited situations, but those just happened to happen?

When big dollars and corporate reputation are involved, people see what they want to see.

I worked at PNC at the time - we lost quite a few officers. After that the policy was changed that bank employees (officers) could not travel on the same flight.

My area of responsibility was commercial loan audit; I did the forensic review of the owners at the time of Iron City Brewing who defrauded PNC out of I think about $31MM.
