Pulling people out of the ditc...
|
I saw a guy smoking a meerschaum tobacco pipe as he drove...my Grandpa used to smoke a pipe, but I can't think of the last time I've seen anyone smoking one, Grandpa quit a good 20 years ago...
My Dad used to smoke one every Lent when he gave up cigarettes, but he finally quit both about 15 years ago...
Just weird to see a guy around my age smoking a pipe...don't see that much...

Unless it's packed with something besides tobacco. My dad did, a long time ago. The only people I've seen since then have been rather old and wielding handlebar mustaches. Probably just a coincidence.

A smoking pipe that is specifically made to smoke tobacco typically consists of a chamber (the bowl) for the combustion of material and a thin stem (shank) ending in a mouthpiece (the bit). Pipes can range from the very simple machine-made briar pipe to highly-prized handmade and artful implements created by renowned pipemakers which are often very expensive collector's items. "Estate pipes" are previously owned pipes that are sold to new owners.
The bowls of tobacco pipes are commonly made of briar, meerschaum, corncob or clay. Less common are cherrywood, olivewood, maple, mesquite, oak, and bog-wood. Generally a dense-grained wood is ideal. Minerals such as catlinite and soapstone have also been used. Pipe bowls of all these materials are sometimes carved with a great deal of artistry.

Both my grandpa's and father used to smoke "pipes". I remember the stands (small boxes) that you could spin. In the middle under the lid was supplies, like filters, tobacco, mouth pieces, etc. There was about 9 different "pipes" on the stand with different woods (for flavor I guess). I enjoyed the smell of the pipe smoke. (Better than those stinky ciggs) Both grandpas have passed on, and dad quit smoking in 2000 when he had his heart attach. I hadn't seen a pipe smoker until I watched the recent Hatfeild and McCoy series

Very cool! Thanks Mr. DeeQEdward [fixed]. And good eyes to tell what material said pipe was made out of from driving distance.

meerschaum pipes have a distinctive bowl compared to other pipes, very easy to notice the white bowl...

For some reason and I don't know why, I just keep picturing the teddy bear on "Ted" smoking the bong...another type of pipe.

I am not MrDeeQ or Mr Deek not for lack of trying, though... Does Ed have a five 20-year plan we don't know about? Growing up, our next-door neighbor smoked a pipe. The smoke had a pleasant, sweet smell.

Back in my earliest banking days, one of the Internal Auditors smoked the most awesome smelling pipe...we knew he was in town by the smell when he walked in...in those days, you could smoke inside the bank...it smelled SO good~!

My neighbor used to smoke a very ornate meerschaum pipe with cherry tobacco in it. He passed away several years ago, but every time I smell that tobacco, I think of him, and I see that pipe.
