Is it possible for an LLC to use a social security number instead of a tax ID number?

I thought that if you had a single member LLC that their social security number could be used. Maybe I'm wrong.

As far as I have been told it is husband & wife LLC. I haven't seen the paperwork as yet.

Then my understanding is that the LLC would need an EIN.

Thanks for your help. Of course while I was trying to get an answer, the loan assistant e-mailed me that they do indeed have a EIN. arghhhh.

According to the IRS, for a single-owner LLC, you may use the SSN of the owner, or the EIN (if he/she has one). See the instructions for the completion of Form W-9, page 4.
