Hello all.

A customer brings in $23,120.00 in cash and purchases three cashier's checks. They are in the amounts of $25.00, $18,755.00 and $4,340.00. We filed a CTR for the total cash transaction. But are we required to log the purchase on the MIL as well? Do we log only the check for $4,340.00 or all three checks since they were purchased at the same time, by the same person and with cash (even though the total is over $10,000.00)?

My original thinking was that since we'd filed the CTR, we were done. But now I'm not so sure.

Any thoughts?

I would definitely think you would need to write the 2 over 3000 on your monetary instrument log. Didnt you say they were all purchased with cash?

Yes, but only one is between $3,000.00 and $10,000.00. I was afraid that if you only log one of the checks, it wouldn't show the whole picture of what happened. But if you log all of the checks, it's over the $10,000.00 threshold.

There is no requirements to log any of them. MI record keeping requirements are based on aggregate totals. Since you filed a CTR, you are done.

Key to this story is the customer brought in $23,120 cash. This prompts a CTR right away, regardless of what the customer uses the money for (depositing, cashier check purchasing, etc).
