Please advise: Two county schools operating under the same tax id #- deposit $11,000.00 between the two. Are these considered separate entities and not requiring a ctr? Are public schools automatically exempt or do you file an exemption?

Thank you.

Schools funded by tax revenues; i.e. "public" schools, are properly classified as government entities and are automatically exempt.

I saw an earlier posted question that said to not confuse PTA's or cafeteria accounts with the schools for exemption? Is this accurate, Ken?

PTAs are not a public entity. A cafeteria may not be either.

What rlcarey said...even if someone has quite mistakenly allowed the PTA to use the school district's TIN.

Do you have to file a one-time designation of exempt person form for government entities that are automatically exempt?

DOEP filing is NOT required for Banks, Departments and agencies of the US and of states, or entities exercising governmental authority.

So they are just automatically exempt? So if a governmental account goes over the $10,000 reporting threshold, you do not have to file a CTR? It just seems weird not doing anything. Thanks!
