Hi, I recently received a request for information from the local law enforcement and I just want to make sure I'm understanding the Regs right. My request was through email. Without a Grand Jury Subpeona, 314(a) request, or NSL, there is nothing we can do, right? We have not filed a SAR in the past, so we can't use that. Am I understanding thing correctly, or is there somewhere else other than BSA so locate this information?

Thanks in advance!

If they are requesting information and you have not filed a SAR? Then you would need a Subpeona etc... If you filed a SAR and they are emailing you a request pertaining to the SAR, you should have procedures in place to verify the law enforcement contacting you and document this information prior to complying with the request.

I would not honor the email request with anything other than a response that you must have a formal subpoena. An email does not rise to that level.
