Anyone familiar with the Houston and surrounding areas? My Ex-husband’s job is being relocated to Anahuac, TX early next year. What are some nice areas to live with good schools that are in commuting distance to Anahuac? My husband, stepson, and two children (with Ex) will be relocating to join my Ex (and wife) next summer so the kids can be near both parents.

Thanks

My son lives in Houston and my sister lives in the Magnolia/Tomball area and i enjoy that area, but i believe Anahuac is more east of Houston, so that would be quite a ways away.

well, i guess it would determine what you consider a commutable distance. I am 42 miles one way, and have done as much as 60...

He commutes about 60 miles (one way) now and has a government vehicle.

I don't know how big of a city you live in now, but everything in Houston needs to be calculated by time, not distance. 30 miles in/around Houston may be 45 minutes or an hour and a half, depending on time of day, roads, etc. (you probably already know this). Wish i could help you, but I would imagine the part of Houston i'm familiar with (north/northwest) is out of range of where you'd want to live. ETA: ah...Albuquerque.....haven't been there.

Ooh, you know what would be cool Jen is to live in League City, Webster or Clear Lake and commute by ferry over to Anawhack. Lots of very nice homes for sale there with NASA downsizing.

Those are the very best school systems within driving distance of Anahuac. I would steer clear of Baytown and those refinery areas.

RJ is correct...60 miles in Houston could take 3 hours...not being familiar with the east side, i'd suggest that prior to deciding to finalize where you'll go, that you spend a few days communting to/from each area...nothing worse than picking a location and finding the drive is unbearable

I don't have a super-positive image of the Beaumont area, for whatever that's worth, so maybe stay away from there? smile

You get used to Houston traffic and drive accordingly. With a toll pass/EZ tag, you can avoid a lot of the nightmares around the Galleria, uptown and downtown.

I grew up on Cape Cod so Albuquerque is not exactly my favorite place but the Military sent us here. My husband retires next year and are free to go where we want. For now, Houston will have to do since it is what is best for my kiddos.

I think it is great that you and your husband are willing to locate for your children to be close to thier dad. It is nice that you all have that kind of relationship with your ex.

I don't have any thing to add about Houston, I have never been to Texas. I just wanted to tell you I thought you were doing a cool thing for your kids.

Duchess & VWgirl - thank you, I appreciate your comments.

My husand and I have a great relationship with my Ex and his wife. While it may seem "Alabamaish" to some, my kids have two sets of parents that love them both and put them first.

Jen...you are amazing! I know a lot of people who wouldn't cross the street for their ex, so to pick up and move your family so your kids can be close to him shows great character.

I don't know much about the east side of Houston except to repeat what's already been said. My sister lives on the northwest side of Houston and it is really nice. Like Pale said, as long as you have a TxTag or EZ tag you can jump on the beltway and avoid a lot of the traffic.

Good luck with your move...I hope you enjoy Texas!

Thanks again everyone!

We don't mind commuting, husband and I both drive 50-60 miles roundtrip now so the kids can attend better schools.

Okay...see if you can follow this:

My ex-wife's sister's ex-husband retained custody of their kids. He works for NASA and raised the kids in Seabrook. While I haven't been there, my understanding has been that it is a nice area.

The kids grew up intelligent and all three attend college in Texas now, so maybe that is a good indicator?

The Gulf perhaps? It connects to the ocean!
