I have a family member (late 50s) who just told us that she started to have tremors in hands and legs. So, I start the dreaded search on the internet health sites. Keep tripping over parkinsons.

She is going to see a doc. next week. In the meantime, anyone been exposed to this symptom and dealt with parkinsons? Anyone found it was the result of some other disorder?

Comments/experience with the aobve welcome.

Essential tremor may be accompanied by mild gait disturbance. Tremor frequency may decrease as the person ages, but the severity may increase, affecting the person's ability to perform certain tasks or activities of daily living. Heightened emotion, stress, fever, physical exhaustion, or low blood sugar may trigger tremors and/or increase their severity. Onset is most common after age 40, although symptoms can appear at any age. It may occur in more than one family member. Children of a parent who has essential tremor have a 50 percent chance of inheriting the condition. Essential tremor is not associated with any known pathology.

It doesn't necessarily have to be Parkinson's related. While I don't have tremors I do notice that I at times get "shaky" if I'm "too "hungry and haven't eaten for a while. Prayers from Philly for you, your loved one and family.

Parkinsons, likely culprit, but something as simple as hypoglycemia could also be involved. Need more info on duration, frquency and severity of the tremors to be sure. Also have they recently started any new meds?

What Deek said. While the Internet is great and you can find almost anything you want to know, researching health issues can be very scary and symptoms vary from person to person.

By chance, does this person take any medications such as anti-depressants? Particulary Zoloft?

Thanks for the responses.....will see doctor this week. Not taking anti-depressants. Not taking any new meds. Stopped some meds but I would be surprised if this is the reaction. Tremors in legs and hands typically not both at the same time. Can go hours with nothing and them all of a sudden have incontrollable tremors that may last, say, 5 minutes range. Then subside. No issues with speech, etc. thanks for you sound advice.

I get this way around work! Seriously, the doc can look at you and have walk to see how you walk and then look at your eye movement to dismiss PK easily enough. Sometimes, it's mental. I knew of someone who had stress do this to them. Have them take some long walks and get out and stretch real good for about an hour and then see how they feel. Also coming off Caffeine can make you jumpy. Really. Don't read the internet. It does no good but add fear and stress.

My sister has the 'shakes' often and was recently told by her doctor that it is do to her blood sugar being too low. She needs to be eating more regular and frequent to avoid the drops.

Saw the GP. Suspects PD but had to order CAT scans, etc. Symptoms very much like the cardinal symptoms for PD. Hate dealing with doctors, esp. in a non big city area where there are no specialists, only generalists.

Nightmare level frustrations dealing with the Medical "experts".. Finally we saw a Neurologist this week! Of course, she does not like CT scans so that was scrapped (ordered by the Family doctor) and will do nothing prior to seeing an MRI. She did indicate, in all likelihood, it's Parkinsons Disease, probably had it for some time, showing slightly and so was fluffed off as being out of sorts that day or similar. Thanks for asking. It is quite an ordeal trying to help the person through the medial bureaucracy and trying to keep up the spirits of the person. The web can be a person's undoing if they start to read about an illness. The good and the bad is displayed for all to see and deal with...and think about. Once again, it proves the old saying should hold true: Do not put off all your important plans for the future, such as travel, because conditions may make it very difficult. i will keep you posted. helps to write this out!
