My son is having his third shoulder surgery tomorrow (in less than 3 years!). Poor kiddo! First surgery repaired a football injury, second repaired a weight lifting injury, and this one repairs them both. His shoulder is still dislocating even after the first two surgeries. I would be most appreciative if you all would join me in praying for him. He's really nervous because this is supposed to be an open surgery and not arthroscopic like the last two.

Thank you!

Wow - this sounds awful and I can understand why he's nervous. Prayers going up immediately.

Prayers for your son. My husband has had multiple surgeries on his arm so I know that it is stressful. Best wishes for a successful surgery and hopefully the last one.

Thoughts and prayers. Try to think of different sports for him where the shoulders are not that important - maybe soccer? Shoulders are only incidental................

laugh Who needs shoulders anyways? He's actually not playing any sports, but is wanting to go into the Air Force and eventually become a firefighter and paramedic. The outcome of this surgery will be a major determining factor for if that plan will work out for him. He knows this recovery is crucial to his future and he HAS to do what the doctors and physical therapists say. If not, it will jeopardize those plans.

Finally got a call and his surgery is at 9:45. He's asked for steak and mashed potatoes for dinner tonight since he won't be able to eat until late tomorrow. smile

Thank you all for the prayers! I got home with my son about an hour ago. He is in quite a bit of pain (more than the previous surgeries), but the doctor feels this surgery was very successful. Since this was an open surgery, they gave my son a nerve block in his neck (kind of like an epidural for women giving birth). He said he can't feel much from his waist up on the side he had the surgery on. It will wear off in 15-24 hours so he should be able to get some decent sleep tonight.

Always hard to see your kiddos sick or hurting, but I'm hopeful that this will finally fix his shoulder!

Thanks again for the prayers! smile

Glad the surgery went well.

BTW - my husband had a nerve block in November when he had hernia surgery. I think his lasted a little more than 24 hours so hopefully your son's will, too.

Sounds like good news! I've had the nerve block for shoulder surgery and it was a good thing. Make sure he starts taking pain pills as soon as the block starts to wear off. If he waits until the pain gets bad it'll be harder to control.

He can finally move his hand today. We're keeping up on the pain meds and made sure he took them before the block started to wear off. Seems to be doing well today.

He's VERY chatty today! laugh He also thanked me for staying home with him and said he really appreciates it since there's a lot of things he can't do himself. The thank you warmed my heart smile
