Two days ago, a boy in my son's class collapsed at cross country practice and his heart stopped. Thankfully, someone witnessed his collapse, started CPR and called 911. EMS was able to get his heart started, and he was taken by helicopter to Riley Children's Hospital in Indy. The doctors have put him in a medically induced coma for at least the next few days.

I know there are a lot of prayer warriors on this site. Please keep Mitchell, his family, and his doctors in your prayers.

This always makes me stop and wonder why this happens to young athletic folks. Prayers for Mitchell and his family.

Prayers for Mitchell. I saw the same thing happen at a 5k race. An athletic looking high school boy collapsed and his heart stopped right after the finish line. People started CPR immediately and one ran for the AED. Before they could get the pads on him for the AED his heart started and he gasped for air. Very frightening, but he was up and walking after the medics arrived. Poor Mitchell - sounds like his episode was far worse.

Way, way south.
Consider prayer said. Always sad when a young person has health issues. A former boss lost his son after graduating from HS and going to a party. Solid young man who had dual athletic and academic scholarships who had one evening of bad decisions that he paid for with his life. May Jesus Bless this young man.

So frightening. My son was on the track team in 8th grade. At their first meet, in another town, one of his teammates collapsed during a race and unfortunately they were not able to save him. This was traumatizing to all of the other athletes to witness as well. I cannot imagine being the parents who get that call. Prayers for this young man and his family.

State of confusion
Sending my prayers from Wisconsin! It is so scary how these things can happen. We had a local girl that had a heart attack at school right in class. A teacher used the defibrillator they have there and performed CPR until the EMS arrived and saved her life - she had an unknown underlying issue with her heart. It is a gift from God that she is alive.

Thank you, everyone, for supporting Mitchell and his family in prayer.

To pass on an update received last night:

All of Mitchell's secondary organs are functioning normally and he has shown no signs of seizures. He has been responding to simple voice commands, but the doctors sedate him if he becomes too active to keep movement and brain wave activity reduced (standard protocol for anyone who may have experience trauma to the brain). The family expects that he will remain sedated until at least late Friday night.

Continued thoughts and prayers would be appreciated!

Another update. . .Mitch made fantastic progress over the weekend. He is able to sit in a chair now, and is communicating well with his family. He is having some issues with his lungs but is doing breathing treatments that seem to be helping. He is scheduled for a heart catheterization on Wednesday, so they will know more about next steps then.

Thanks for all the prayers for him and his family!

The good news keeps coming. Mitchell's lungs have improved to the point that the doctors are no longer concerned about them. He has moved out of ICU into the next step down from that. He was able to walk about 250 yards total yesterday, and his central line has been removed.

His mom has asked for specific prayers for Mitch's heart function to continue to improve, and for him to be able to rest/sleep for longer periods. He has apparently not been resting well and can't sleep for longer than about 3 hours at a time, at best.

I told her this morning that she has bankers across the country praying for her family!

So happy to hear this! I had my own trials and tribulations 6 years ago when my daughter was seriously hurt in a snowmobile accident and it meant a lot to know friends were thinking and praying for her. I will continue to pray for his recovery wink
