We accepted a check for deposit in one of our branch offices. The check was just returned today as duplicate because it had already been presented via Mobile RDC at another bank. Is there anything we could have done to prevent this from happening?

Most likely not.

Reviewing the check though, is there a spray or endorsement on the back of the check before it was presented to you? Some of the better scanners will 'spray' the check, therefor indicating to the accepting bank that this item may have already been electronically deposited.

Depending on how your conversation goes with the account owner as well, you may consider not banking this customer any further. Either they are being sneaky and fraudulent, or they have a poor system of internal controls in their place of business that would allow this item to be physically deposited as well.

Thank you Just Jay. The back of the check was blank since it was deposited via a Mobile app. And, to your point, we are contacting our customer to get the full story. We will make the necessary decisions from that point.

That is one of the glaring weaknesses of mobile RDC.
