Take a look at the risk assessment at the end of this document (Appendix A). It should get you started. The paper is a good discussion of RDC risk.

If you look at that, you will see that it does get into customer risk, suggesting that you start with the loan risk rating (assuming there is one).

You want to look at the financial strength, OD history, etc.

I'd also add a risk item related to the customer's security over and destruction of the original items. There has been a lot of chatter lately about multiple presentments of items in different formats -- image, ACH and original -- and your customer's security to prevent such fraud is a key risk-related element.

If the customer has a check-cashing service as part of its business, additional risk elements can creep in. For example, there have also been complaints about cases in which a check payee has cashed a check at a check-cashing business that uses RDC, received the check back (the check isn't stamped or otherwise marked to indicate it's been deposited) through collusion with the check-cashing business employee, and deposited the item directly to the payee's own account.

When you go through the BITs risk chart, those risks are considered.

Thanks, Kaybee. Obviously, I had not yet read the BITS information.

It is a good document for anyone trying to grapple with rdc risk.
