We currently review obituaries daily in the newspaper for bank customers and place a hold on whatever type of account they have with the bank. We are looking to streamline our process and wonder if it is enough to rely on next of kin notifying us and the DNE report? How are others handling this process?

Years ago, a bank did that and missed one. The accounts were then fraudulently emptied, and heirs found out that was the bank's policy and procedure. They sued and bank lost. It is a terrible practice, not to mention what happens when you freeze the account of the wrong person and send back a SSN deposit and return it as the person being deceased. You take action only when a person shows up with the death certificate. Quit wasting your time.
