What is a recommended size for an IA Department? My bank has $433MM in assets and is growing at a clip of over 60% (no, that is not a typo) per year with no signs of slowing. However, we do not have a trust department or an investments function. Also, we do almost no consumer lending.

I don't think there is a formula. I recently worked for a $750mm bank as mgr. It was myself and 2 staff. Due to continuing growth and taking on IT audit, we were going to get another person for 2005.

I'm at a $2.5 Billion place now. Very complex lines of business. Performs services for other financial institutions such as custodian for their investments, running the ATM/POS network, etc. I have 4 staff and will probably be adding another in the near future.

Both places have separate compliance departments.

We are approaching $300MM, have an audit department of 2 officer level employees. We have a trust department, and do a lot of consumer (direct/indirect)lending. We also have a lot of investments and municipal accounts. The only audit that is outsourced is the IT audit. We also have a seperate compliance department (with one person) BUT we IA performs all the compliance audits.

We are roughly 430 million with two internal audit officers. We have a small trust dept., a large lending portfolio, 7 branches (adding 2 more next year). We have a full time compliance officer also.

Assets size - 400M, staff of one. External IT audit, no trust dept., typical community bank functions - (consumer/commercial lending, mortgage lending to secondary investors, e-banking (wire, debit cards, ACH, transactional website); 11 physical locations; 1 full-time compliance officer.

500 million / 14 branches. One full time IA and one part time IA in training. We are also the compliance and loan review.
