Another big issue with counter checks (AKA temporary checks), is that many times they are not encoded or printed with a serial number, thus making a stop payment VERY difficult to place/manage.
With high use of debit cards, bill pay, mobile banking, P2P transactions, their use is extremely limited, but we do still offer them as a courtesy. They are behind the teller line and we have requested our check printer to encode and print them with sequential serial numbers. This makes stop payments feasible and aids the customer in recordkeeping.
We utilize a separate printed Checking Withdrawal ticket for OTC withdrawals that has a unique internal R&T to identify it as such with no serial number and a unique tran code when it posts (ie it won't look like a check, it posts as a withdrawal).
