Social Security and Stimulus Check

Social Security and Stimulus Check - 08/06/08 02:19 PM

Non customer presented a social security check for insurance and a stimulus check. She wanted to cash them. Both had the same name listed on it, but the spelling was different. Because of lack of verifiable identification, the checks were not cashed.....The customer also said she didn't know why she got that check.......

The teller is saying that she'd never seen a social security check with the wording "for insurance" listed near the amount of the check. Is this common ?

Have you tried the Treasury Check Verification service? This has been up and running since 05/20 and it claims to be able to verify Treasury checks issued within the last 13 months.

Also - do you cash checks not drawn on your bank for non-customers?

My question as well. Do you cash checks for non-customers. We have been cashing social security checks and tax refund checks for non-customers and are reviewing the policy. Does anyone know if banks are obligated to cash these items?

No, you are not obligated to cash these checks.

I think you'll find that the original post should have read "stimulus" check. I have edited it.
