Sharing Customer Information Among Affiliates

Sharing Customer Information Among Affiliates - 03/27/01 03:23 PM

The FCRA allows the sharing of name, address, and telephone number among affiliates whether or not the customer has elected to "opt out." Does anyone have a reference or comment as to whether or not hte meaning of "address" would extend to e-mail addresses?

This is the electronic age. We should be thinking of e-mail addresses in the same way we think of street addresses. My vote is to treat an e-mail address in the same way that we treat "hard" information about a consumer.

In the absence of a specific ruling, I would treat a virtual address similar to a physical address. For the intentions of the regulation, I would see no difference.

Strengthening this argument, virtual addresses will likely become more protected if any of these anti-spamming laws take effect. http://www.newsfactor.com/perl/story/8369.html
