Conference Countdown

Conference Countdown - 04/23/04 11:18 AM

The ABA Conference Schedule is posted. BOL'ers will be there and ready to network, without a keyboard.

The conference starts Sunday June, 6 and we'd like to start thinking of a night when we might all be able to meet up and possibly enjoy one anothers company. It looks like Sunday ends at 6:30, Monday at 7:30 or 8 PM after a CRCM reception, Tuesday has a yet unpublished networking event and Wednesday afternoon the conference ends.

Re: Conference Countdown - 04/23/04 05:18 PM

I believe the CRCM Reception is off-site this year at the Chicago FED. Kewl. But that will make Monday tough. And Tuesday night they'll have a dine around, a Chinatown bus tour and the White Sox vs. Philadelphia ball game.

This may influence your decision to vote on Sunday night.

Just so you out-of-towners who are going to either a White Sox game or a Cubs game can be prepared for the difference in the Chicago baseball experience, I put together a little something for you (ok - I didn't create it and it is obviously exaggerated and should not scare anyone from going to the Sox game!) Re: Conference Countdown - 04/30/04 06:20 PM

I had 4 tickets to Mon & Tues Cubs game which have already been distributed. You could most likely buy tickets outside of Wrigley before the games, but be aware you will pay lots of $$ (assuming good weather) and may not get good seats. As for the White Sox - waltz right up to the box office and I guarantee there will be plenty of seats available.

Meet you guys in the lobby at 7:00. Unlike Nashville, there really is a lobby in this hotel? Several of us were meeting in the "lobby" when conference was in Nashville - as it turns out there was no lobby and we wandered around aimlessly looking for each other. Finally, I just sat down in one spot and waited. They eventually showed up!

Re: Conference Countdown - Join Us for Pizza - 05/10/04 04:52 PM

If steak is what you want, and the budget is not a concern, I might suggest Gibson's on Rush - Good steak
Posted By: RVFlyboy

Re: Conference Countdown - Join Us for Pizza - 05/10/04 06:07 PM

Maybe everyone wants to go out somewhere, but there is a steakhouse in the Hyatt Regency - Stetson's Chop House that might suit everyone.
Posted By: redsfan

Re: Conference Countdown - Join Us for Pizza - 05/10/04 06:24 PM

There is also Smith & Wollensky, Morton's , or Mike Ditka's .

I have had a good steak at each. For a large group, I have only been to Smith & Wollensky's. They did an excellent job coordinating food for a large group (we had 21 for dinner).

For something completely different, I would suggest Fogo de Chao. It's a South American Steakhouse. At your seat is a chip, one side red, the other, green. Instead of ordering one entree, waiters circulate around the dining room carrying protions of various kinds of meats, including: beef and pork tenderloin, pork and beef ribs, top and bottom beef sirloin, chicken breast, and lamb cops. You can get a small portion of each sliced from the larger protion direct to your plate. The waiters will continue to serve until you turn your chip over to "red." They also have a huge buffet of vegetables and salads.

Not cheap, but great fun, and a great feed.

Re: Conference Countdown - Join Us for Pizza - 05/10/04 07:11 PM

Another possibility for consideration - Erie Cafe. Richard Insley and I ate there in 2001 and it was very good then. I presume it has not gone downhill.

Another interesting and delicious dining experience is Lawry's The Prime Rib only a few blocks from the hotel.
Posted By: waldensouth

Re: Conference Countdown - Join Us for Pizza - 05/10/04 07:19 PM

Okay, guys, y'all gotta stop coming up with ideas! If we're to make reservations BEFORE we get there, we need to decide where we're going. So far we have:

1.Gibson's on Rush
2.Stetson's Chop House
3.Smith and Wolensky
4. Morton's
5. Mike Ditka's
6. Foga de Chao
7. Erie Cafe'
8. Lawry's The Prime Rib

So far, I count 6 dinner companions. How shall we do this?
Posted By: Lestie G

Re: Conference Countdown - Join Us for Pizza - 05/10/04 07:26 PM

walden, I count seven (remember Chris who is coming with me). We had planned to go to Fogo do Chao at some point while we're there anyway, but anyplace the group chooses is fine with us. I'm sure it will be a good place, and we're just looking forward to the networking.

I don't care where we go - they all sound good and come with good recommendations. Since I'll be pushing 7 pm, we might want to go someplace close or even stay at the hotel.
Posted By: William

Re: Conference Countdown - Join Us for Pizza - 05/10/04 08:57 PM

Anyone know if Stetson's has a dress code?

Just answered my own question - Magic's link says dress is "casual to cocktail".
Posted By: waldensouth

Re: Conference Countdown - Join Us for Pizza - 05/12/04 02:02 PM

Click on the link in Jim's earlier thread - it states "Casual to Cocktail" for the dress code. Casual means many things to many different people. Growing up in Fl - casual was throwing a T-shirt over your swimsuit! Probably not the same in Chicago. Khakis should be fine. CubDave should be able to define "Chicago Casual" for us.

Re: Conference Countdown - Join Us for Pizza - 05/13/04 01:21 PM

I've made a reservation for a party of 8 at Stetson's for Saturday June 5th at 7:00. Reservations are in my name. Those 8 are: William, David Dickinson, LestieG and companion, MagicBanker, PatrickG, KenH, and Me. I went to www.opentable.com to make the reservations and tried to round it up to an even 10, but there were no tables available. It looks like they are booked until after 9:00.

A couple of you expressed interest in the thread but didn't pm me, if you're still interested, I'll see what I can do to get the reservation # increased.
Posted By: RVFlyboy

Re: Conference Countdown - Join Us for Pizza - 05/13/04 01:53 PM

If the reservation cannot be increased, maybe a separate reservation and split into two smaller tables could be an option.

Call the restaurant directly. They offer limited options to open table but are often able to stretch them. (I've learned from experience!) And someone drink a glass of good wine for me.

Just a follow up. If you plan on attending the conference, and your name is not listed (see my 4/26 post in this thread), please post an "I'm attending" or "I'll be there" message.

So far, 38 BOL'ers are attending.

Re: Conference Countdown - Join Us for Pizza - 05/25/04 02:55 PM

I am not attending the conference, but I am trying to clear my schedule to possibly come down during the day on Monday -are there any BOL lunch plans happening on the 7th anywhere?

Re: Conference Countdown - Join Us for Pizza - 05/25/04 03:28 PM

Dave, On Monday we have a conference seated luncheon and session from 12:15 - 1:45 p.m.

Guess what the session is!

Compliance & Marketing or Marketing & Compliance: Why Can't We All Get Along?

"In this humorous and spirited session you will hear both sides of the complex issues facing marketing & compliance professionals. See how and why both Marketing & Compliance need to understand each other's challenges in order to improve organizational efficiency and performance."

Sorry this is late, but I'll be at the conference!

Jacob's Dad (Dave M.) - You're not late. Glad you can make it.

You can always crash those things Dave. (Why I'm helping I don't know considering you worry overmuch about Dawine invading Chicago) Anyhoo, there are ALWAYS people who skip the lunch and go elsewhere (for that subject I would heh heh).

Re: Conference Countdown - 05/26/04 12:10 AM

Please add me to the list of attendees. Chicago baseball (I am going to a Cubs game on Saturday in addition to the Sox game on Tuesday - thinking about wearing my Rangers gear), pizza and BOLers - who could resist?

Re: Conference Countdown - 05/27/04 08:50 PM

A bunch of BOL'ers will be going to Giordano's for pizza on Sunday evening, June 6th.

Shall we see if Giordano's complies with: http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/europe/05/27/italy.pizza.ap/index.html

So Dave, what should the dinner entertainment be... cork tricks, sensual desserts, or bad jokes?

I'm not sure I understand this post. Perhaps this was intended to be a PM rather than a general posting.

Jim, I'm not sure either. But I want to be there!

Ken, We had talked about meeting at airport and riding to hotel together. Better make plans without me. Just found out my Mom has stage 3 colon cancer and it is likely that I will not be attending. Thanks!

Sorry, didn't realize how far down the post this was. Dave was here and did a compliance seminar for us. The dinner we all went to afterwards got a little nuts. He started it with those "trunk monkey" commercials.

On the Edge - Make that a set of prayers. Medical advancements have been phenom in catching and treating colon cancer. God go with you.

I'm attending the conference and looking forward to meeting all BOL'ers.

Re: Conference Countdown - Join Us for Pizza - 06/01/04 09:35 PM

Just a statement of hope here. Last year there was a comment from someone who thought the established BOL'ers were cliquish and not accepting of a "newbie". This year we are having a big pizza party get-together so we can network. But please, if you just see some BOL'ers gathered at the conference and want to say "hi", just do it! I don't believe any of us want to give the wrong impression and that is what happened last year.

Feel free to introduce yourself to us at the BOL booth too! We are there for you. And your fellow BOL'ers also see the benefits of networking. So I don't think anyone will mind. On the contrary, I'd hate to hear that someone didn't say hi when we could have met. Making new friends is one purpose for attending.

I second Andy's comments. I love to meet new people so come up and say "HI".

Re: Conference Countdown - Join Us for Pizza - 06/03/04 01:02 AM

Just curious, do we have very many husbands tagging along that might be looking for something to do while the wives are in meetings?
Posted By: Andy_Z

Re: Conference Countdown - Join Us for Pizza - 06/03/04 03:37 PM

This husband will be in the meetings.

But it is nice of you to ask. I went on a similar trip with my wife where she was the participant. I wasn't interested in the shopping trips they'd planned for "spouses" as they were not targeting gadgets or tools, and who wants to look for clothes all day?

Re: Conference Countdown - Join Us for Pizza - 06/03/04 04:25 PM

Just checking, hubby says there are only so many newspapers and magazines he can read in 3 days!!!! Guess he's not too thrilled to venture out on the highways by himself. Definitely not going to be shopping for clothes either.

There is supposed to be a nice boat tour that goes down the river and out onto the lake. Maybe a group of hubbies might like to get together. The Museum of Science & Industry is AWESOME!!!!! I've been about 6 times and I have never seen all of it. Both of these are more fun in a group though.

Soccer Mom: My husband and daughter will by coming with me. They plan to go the the aquarium and museum - Monday and Tuesday I think. The Navy pier we were going to do together. Is your husband a sports fanatic. (goes into convulsions if ESPN is down?)

Hope all of you enjoy the city (and the conference) - the weather should be pretty good. And for those of you sitting in my Wrigley seats - can ya do me a favor and bring on some better days at Wrigley for goodness sakes!

Dave, I hear the temps have been 70s during the day and 60s at night. Not bad, might need a jacket for a windy night in Wrigley Field. Goooooo Cubies!!!!!!

I'll do my best!! I'm under strict orders from my baseball-crazy nephew to bring back prime souvenirs, so I'll have to wander around behind the stands at some point.

Re: Conference Countdown - Join Us for Pizza - 06/03/04 11:25 PM

OK, I am outta here. Finish packing tonight and start making my way north. We are driving and making a mini-vacation out of this too; I have a stop in St. Louis and one in New Lenox on the way up. Probably stop in Lockport as well, anyone ever heard of it?

We are still deciding on the return trip stops. Got invited to tour the Old Charter distillery, might have to take them up on that!! It's not too far out of the way-----if we get enough samples!

Re: Conference Countdown - Join Us for Pizza - 06/03/04 11:44 PM

I have had a change in plans and will not be attending due to my father having open heart surgery in the past 3 weeks. He is finally on the mend after some very trying days but I don't want to travel that far so soon considering how shaky things were. He just got out of intensive care. A member of my staff is going in my place. I am recommending she look up the BOL group.

Re: Conference Countdown - 06/04/04 02:31 AM

I am flying from Logan in Boston to Chicago, arriving Sunday morning and am looking forward to the conference. A long-time IT audit, security background -- but I'm looking forward to the "big picture" overall compliance focus, since I've taken on new role and OFAC/BSA is very hot with our institution. I received my e-mail after registering, and I'm looking forward to the conference.

I hope this isn't a stupid question, but does anyone know the approximate number of attendees? I had two weird conference experiences over the past year: I attended one conference run by the Informations Systems Audit & Control Association (ISACA), and there were 1,800 attendees. Though well-run, it was almost unwieldy with that many attendees. The second workshop was an information security/privacy conference with 86 attendees (much fewer than they thought would attend) and it ended up feeling like it was too small.

I need this break, so a few days in Chicago will be nice.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you David, and in my prayers when they are not.

I hope this isn't because you don't want to answer the questions about "joint intent".

Get well!

Re: Conference Countdown - 06/04/04 03:20 PM

I've only been to one other of these conferences, but it was well run, and the number of people wasn't an issue in my opinion. ABA has it well organized.

Thank you for the information, Andy. I will be there to learn, listen, browse and network.

Just be sure to browse and network some by the BOL booth. We look forward to seeing all y'all. (For those not from the south, that is the plurality of "y'all")

I have had a family emergency; therefore I will not be able to attend. So, WJ, please take me off the list. I am very sorry that I will not get to meet many of you.

Thanks Andy. Actually, I was looking forward to the "intent" discussion.

Here's an update: I went to the doctor this morning. He gave me a shot and a new antibiotic. He thought this would run its course in 5 days. I moved my flight to Monday. I'll be arriving around 4 pm on Monday. I'm going to miss the Pizza Party and Saturday night dinner. This way I can still present (hopefully) on Tuesday afternoon.

Ken/Pegasus: Thank you for your kind words in the PM you sent me. I was unable to reply by PM for some odd reason.

Re: Conference Countdown - 06/07/04 03:16 PM

Well . . . I'm back, kind of. I'm much better, but not full of energy. I lost 14 pounds (I only started at 160) but I haven't been running a fever since Saturday noon. I'm low on energy, but coming back.

I'm flying to Chicago this afternoon, so I hope to see all of you soon.
