What dept handles garnishment and levy's

Can I get a response on what department handles garnishments & levy's in your banks? We are having a discussion on who should do this.

I am the Compliance Officer of a $150M bank. I handle all the levies, garnishments and subpoenas.

600M....Customer Service handles ours.

300M, Operations handles garnishments and levies.

400m Security handles levies & subpoenas

900M Bookkeeping handles

200M - bookeeping

200M, back-office deposit ops

As I recall, tasks like this are most often assigned to the department with at least a remote connection with the task at hand and a perceived gap in its workload.

Ditto.

We were $600M and it was Ops.

Just over $1 billion and it's the deposit operations department - for employee wage garnishment it's Human Resources.

Deposit Ops- That's were everything goes that does have a clear owner!!

Bookkeeping Ops because we don't want the bankers touching them!

$300M - Deposit Operations.

Collections.

Isn't the real answer, the department which can best react to and maintain the requests? It could be that one department oversees the procedure and others do parts of the work involved. What would work best for you?

$350M -I did it when I was in the Operations Dept. Now I moved to Compliance & the levies, subpoenas & garnishments came with me.

In my experience, the reasons for planting this responsbility in one department or another are historic; i.e. unique to the institution. As Edie notes, it may even be the background of a particular employee that prompts their migration from one area to another.

If the proposed regulations requiring banks to identify protected federal payments are finalized, then federal functional regulatory agencies will be responsible for examining for compliance. (Yeah, like they know something about the topic.) From my perspective, that puts a pretty big weight on the "compliance department" side of the scales.

$250M-Internal Auditor (which is me) and BSA/Compliance officer.

It was the same among the 3 financial institutions I've worked at:

1. $350 million - deposit operations
2. $280 million - bank operations
3. $20 billion - central bank operations

With all three, if it involved an employee it was handled by HR and myself (Compliance Officer)
