dual control or atm attendant

dual control or atm attendant - 12/07/16 01:41 PM

Please respond on the topic of dual control or a single ATM attendant when balancing ATM's with a single combination. With the reduction of staff at branches there seems to be much discussion of making this a single person activity.

Too much risk and liability for one person.

Agreed that this is a bad idea, not just from the idea that one person now has control of all this cash, but this may mean you're now sending that one person out to the ATMs alone and that opens the greater possibility of a crime against that person and your bank.

I've done it. I didn't like it. It is one of the reasons that I am a consultant today instead of a banker.

I don't disagree that it's a bad idea but when you have limited staff and management decides it's okay, what do you do?

If management insists on it, I would have them put it in writing and if something happened, they would have a real problem on their hands because they have assumed the risk of risking losing money by just having one employee responsible. Personally, I would not want to be the person who had that responsibility solely on my own. Even with limited staff the whole purpose of dual control is so that if there is a problem, two people have had eyes on it and personally when I was one of the dual control people, I never took my eyes off the money or let the other person leave me by myself.

I'd be worried if I was the single employee for the risk of poor appearance if something happens AND the risk of being robbed while servicing the ATM. I'd probably consider saying no if I was asked to.

Our branch has 2 employees. it is set up that the manager or one of several other employees in my dept accompany whoever is in the branch to settle the ATM (if one of the employees is out). Our dept was chosen because we are the closest to the branch.

That's how we used to do It (it was always against my advice this was done). .....because of that employee embezzled thousands to support wife's like to shop for nice things. We no longer allow it Horrible idea to allow this.

Ours is dual control, and for our outside ATMs, we have an armed escort from the building during the box exchange process and back into the building.
