Payroll Change

Payroll Change - 10/25/07 07:52 PM

Our payroll currently runs from Sunday through Saturday over a 2 week period. We are paid the following Thursday after the pay period ends. We are changing the way payroll is processed and therefore our paychecks will not be available until the next Monday. How much notice do we need to give our employees that the payroll days will change from Thursdays to Mondays?

Give as much notice as you possibly can. Send frequent reminders leading up to the time the change goes into effect. We did a similar change here a few years ago. It's amazing how many employees are truly living check to check. The first pay period with the new pay date change - and in spite of all the prior warnings - we still had several ee's who bounced checks. On a one time only basis -- we waived NSF fees. BTW - we gave 3 months notice and reminders with each bi-weekly payroll.

Thank you for your response! I expect that several employees are going to forget and I wasn't sure if there was a regulation about how much notice was needed.

You may also want to check with your state's department of labor if any notification is necessary. There are restrictions here in Illinois on the frequency of payment. I believe that for biweekly payment must be made within a week of the end of the pay period and that there are notification requirements for when and where to obtain your paychecks. However, I am not in payroll and various states have various laws.
