A Taste of BOL

A Taste of BOL - 10/09/08 08:48 PM

So a while back, the idea of getting a group of BOLers to participate in a food exchange program was brought up. It really hasn't grown legs (no offense) so I decided to take a pulse in the Cooler.

Here's the back story:

About a year and a half ago, Debbie received a shipment to our office of some liquid vitamins. It was shipped in a sturdy styrofoam cooler. Because I'm so radical, I asked Debbie if I could have the cooler to send homemade tamales to my parents in Ohio. I was asked to send tamales to a BOLer so my parents sent back the cooler. Thus began the Taste of BOL Cooler Chain.

The Proposal:

I'd like to see if others are interested in being part of this Chain. Basically, the recipient loads the cooler (it's really not that big, so don't freak out) with regional goodies or something they think identifies their State, food-wise, and sends it to the next person on the list. This continues until the cooler returns to the first person (which would be me). Then, the cycle can continue, be changed up with new BOLers, or end there.

So, just to get an idea if this would be feasible, would anybody be strongly interesting in participating in this chain? Please let me know either by responding or sending me a PM.

Thanks!

Re: A Taste of BOL - 10/09/08 09:13 PM

How does shipping food work? I know it works for cookies since they don't soil fast at room temps, but how does it work for tamales and other foods people might be wanting to share?

Please count me in - great idea!

Dip - dry ice.

Dip, I have the cooler now so I will pack anything perishable in cold packs and have it sent overnight. I was sent ribs overnight with cold packs and they were wonderful!!

Err, let me amend my earlier statement: Count me in but please put me *before* Dooby in the rotation.

Re: A Taste of BOL - 10/09/08 09:43 PM

Dip, I first froze the tamales then expressed them with icepacks. The area to which I was sending didn't have overnight available via USPS so it took two days, but they remained frozen. However, it was shipped during winter so that helped. From what I've heard, candy manufacturers won't ship to Phx in the summer for consumers--but that could be an exaggeration.

This sounds interesting, but now you already have Louisiana in the loop.

That's all good. Multiple BOLers from the same state may have different tastes. So, it's all good.

I'm game on the geoduck, and in on the cooler! (I hope I didn't just agree to something that is horrific!)

I've never eaten one, but I have had razor clams (yum) and I imagine geoducks and razor clams taste pretty much the same. As far as the geoduck goes, I'll let Riz have the honor of wrestling the beast from the sand!

You have to dig down like 2 or 3 feet in the sand to find them. You bring the shovel and I'll bring the rubber gloves.

With any luck, Rizzy, this means I've secured the path of NOT having Doob's package come to me!

It would have to leave Louisiana and come back!
