I'm probably going to get hit for my comment, but I'll make it anyways since I've had the chance to play basketball against a few college women basketball players. The women's college game is around a high school boys level.

Re: Women's Final Four - 04/01/09 07:46 PM

If there is one thing more boring than men's basketball, it's womens basketball. Seriously, what is the deal with basketball? What a one-sided game... there is no defense. No game (and basketball is a game, not a sport) should have scores that reach into the 100s consistently; although I suppose that isn't the case in women's basketball :toungue in cheek:

Re: Women's Final Four - 04/01/09 07:55 PM

I have the pleasure of watching every UConn women's game on TV. Typically, their skill level far exceeds that of their opponents. They smashed the top rated teams by nearly 30 points all season. There is UConn and then the rest of the schools.

Women's basketball is played below the rim and is a much more intellliegent game. With the men, anyone 5'8" simply dunks the ball.

Seems to me, the last time the UConn men and women went to the final four they both won the NCAA Champioship.

Go Huskies!

UCONN girls will be hard to beat, but I hope the Sooners can do it!!! They have a great group of girls that truly enjoy being around each other and enjoy playing basketball. And Coach Coale isn't bad either. This is her 13th year as head coach and when she took it over they were ready to drop the program. Look where they are now!!

Re: Women's Final Four - 04/02/09 04:17 PM

Aside from Sooner and UConn fans are you rooting for perfection or the monumental upset? Because, let's face it, the way that UConn is crushing people it would be a shock if they lost. (And is Ms. Paris REALLY going to pay back her scholarship if they lose??)

Re: Women's Final Four - 04/02/09 07:56 PM

She is the type of person that would. Although I doubt the school would accept it. But she could still give a donation to something. She never thought it would get the media going like it did. She just feels that she hasn't accomplished what she came to do and appreciates the opportunity she was given.

Every college has a legend, passed on from year to year,
To which they pledge allegiance, and always cherish dear.
But of all the honored idols, there’s but one that stands the test,
It’s the stately Nittany Lion, the symbol of our best.

HAIL! to the Lion, loyal and true.
HAIL! Alma Mater, with your white and blue.
PENN! STATE! forever, molder of men (and women),
FIGHT! for her honor — FIGHT! — and victory again

WE ARE............ NIT CHAMPIONSHIP WINNERS grin

Re: Women's Final Four - 04/03/09 04:39 PM

did I at least get the color right?
Posted By: Queen Mum

Re: Women's Final Four - 04/03/09 07:24 PM

Crimson and Cream are the offical colors...not Black.

From the Soonersports.com website....

Crimson & Cream
The school colors of crimson and cream became official over a century ago and you can still see those colors worn proudly by Sooner athletes and fans alike on gamedays or when they want to show their love for the university.

In the fall of 1895, Miss May Overstreet was asked to chair a committee to select the colors of the university. The committee decided the colors should be crimson and cream and an elaborate display of the colors was draped above a platform before the student body.

The student body approved with great enthusiasm and immediately pennants, banners, badges and decorations of every description appeared on the streets, in the windows, at chapel, in classrooms, and all public places; however, local merchants could not supply the demand.

Even though the school colors have evolved to crimson and white over the years, you can ask any self-respecting Sooner what the colors are and they will proudly announce "Crimson and Cream."

On gamedays, a sea of crimson rolls through OU's home arenas and all Sooners are urged to wear the official colors to show the rest of the country what school spirit and Sooner Pride are all about.

And yes we are the University of Oklahoma Sooners, but the chant is "Boomer! Sooner!"

What is a Sooner?

College sports fans are hard-pressed to find a nickname that is as unique and as linked to a state's history as a Sooner. The University of Oklahoma is the only school known as Sooners.

The origins of Oklahoma's nickname stretch back to the Civil War era. The Homestead Act of 1862, signed by President Abraham Lincoln, provided that a legal settler could claim 160 acres of public land, and those who lived on and improved the claim for five years could receive title.

"Boomers" were settlers who favored the opening of unassigned lands in the Oklahoma Territory and lobbied the U.S. government to this end. Promoting the "Boomer's Paradise," early advocates of settlement in the Unassigned Lands began what is referred to as the "Boomer Movement.

The Boomer Movement gained new momentum in 1886 and 1887 when the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway constructed a line that ran right through the Unassigned Lands. Rail stations at Guthrie, Edmond, Oklahoma (City), Verbeck (Moore), and Norman, created when the line was built, offered high potential for townsites.

At this time political pressure was exerted to open up the Unassigned Lands to settlement. In 1889 an amendment to the Indian Appropriations Bill allowed President Benjamin Harrison to proclaim the Unassigned Lands open for settlement.

At high noon on April 22, 1889, legal aspirants would be able to enter the Oklahoma Territory and choose 160 acres of land. The event soon became known as the "Oklahoma Land Run" or "Land Run of 1889". Settlers from across the globe, seeking free land, made their way to Oklahoma Territory to stake their claim to a new life.

The great dramatic moment came when, at the stroke of noon, starting signals were given at the many points of entry. In some instances it was given by a blue-clad military officer firing his pistol or by his trumpeter, at times by a citizen firing his rifle in the air, or, as at Fort Reno, by the boom of a cannon. All produced the same results -- a tumultuous avalanche of wagons and horsemen surging forward all in one breathtaking instant.

April 22, 1889, was a day of chaos, excitement, and utter confusion. But it was nonetheless a significant day in national history, one that gave birth to new hope for thousands of Americans and became an iconic image in the history of the west.

One of the few rules to claiming a lot of land was that all participants were to start at the same time. Those who went too soon were called "Sooners". Sooners were often deputy marshals, land surveyors, railroad employees, and others who were able to legally enter the territory early to mark out choice pieces of land for themselves or others.

As time went on, "Sooner" came to be a synonym of Progressivism. The Sooner was an "energetic individual who travels ahead of the human procession." He was prosperous, ambitious, competent, a "can-do" individual. And Oklahoma was the Sooner State, the land of opportunity, enterprise and economic expansion, very much in the Progressive spirit that engulfed the old South in the 1920s.

OU athletics teams were called Rough Riders or Boomers for 10 years before the current Sooner nickname emerged in 1908. The university actually derived the name from a pep club called 'The Sooner Rooters.'

Today, the thunderous chants of "Boomer! Sooner!" roll across the Oklahoma landscape. The success of University of Oklahoma athletics teams over the years has made the nickname synonymous with winning.

And when you hear that famous school song you can sing along...
Boomer Sooner

In 1905, Arthur M. Alden, a student in history and physiology whose father was a Norman jeweler, wrote the lyrics to the fight song, borrowing the tune from Yale University's 'Boola Boola' but improvising the words. A year later, an addition was made to it from North Carolina's 'I'm a Tarheel Born' and the two combined to form the university's fight song today. One of the most recognizable college fight songs in the country, 'Boomer Sooner' immediately evokes enthusiasm from OU fans and sends chills down the spines of those who dare to oppose them.

Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner
Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner
Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner
Boomer Sooner, OK U!
Oklahoma, Oklahoma
Oklahoma, Oklahoma
Oklahoma, Oklahoma
Oklahoma, OK U!
I'm a Sooner born and Sooner bred
and when I die, I'll be Sooner dead
Rah Oklahoma, Rah Oklahoma
Rah Oklahoma, OK U!

And the two horse mascots - Boomer and Sooner - (representing the horses that pulled the conastoga wagons during the land run - now represented by the Sooner Schooner) - if you see the one named Sooner, that is a high school classmate of my daughter and their high school mascot was actually the "Boomers" represented by a wagon.
