Sweetened or Unsweetened - 08/26/09 05:56 PM

In the south, the majority of us like our tea sweet - before adding the ice. What is your tea preference?

There's a HUGE difference between the 'sweet tea' you southerners drink and the iced tea (which is sweetended, but not 'sweet tea') they serve up here!

Re: Sweetened or Unsweetened - 08/26/09 06:08 PM

Can't be too sweet though......I'm sweet enough as it is. wink

I was raised in Mississippi but my family was from Missouri so we always had our tea unsweetened. However, we didn't drink a lot of tea. My family is huge coffee drinkers and so am I.

Agreed. That "sweet tea" is nasty stuff. I liek iced tea with lemon and sugar....sweetened, btu a far cry from sweet tea.

I love sweet tea, but since I cut out sugar from my diet, I have now gone to unsweet tea with sweet and low. But it's just not the same.

Re: Sweetened or Unsweetened - 08/26/09 06:32 PM

Being a southerner who grew up in a house which always had tea, I love me some sweet tea. Any time I head North (the land of sucky tea), I'm ready to get home as quickly as possible to some good tea.

that "sweet stuff" doesn't quench my thirst

Sweet tea (as in 'southern')is so sweet that it almost makes me nautious. I don't even like to put sugar in mine. Unsweetened is the best for me smile

Have you tried Splenda? I think sweet and low (the pink or blue packs) and any artificial sweetner with aspartame in it taste funny.

Yeah, Splenda is good but there is some new stuff out that I've been using for my coffee called Truvia. It's way better.

I go with unsweet tea and sweet n low too.

Re: Sweetened or Unsweetened - 08/26/09 06:46 PM

I'm about as far "down south" as you can get...but I don't like sweeeeeet tea, I usually order mine half/half. As far as artificial sweetener, I'd rather drink water and as far as unsweet tea, I'd rather drink out of the creek.

Re: Sweetened or Unsweetened - 08/26/09 06:49 PM

I need to try that truvia. I also want to try some agave nectar.

I prefer mine with vodka.

Re: Sweetened or Unsweetened - 08/26/09 07:00 PM

mmmm vodka and iced tea.

Also, something very regional.

I was at a hotel bar in Boston and ordered a vodka an iced tea and I got a glass of ice, another glass with the vodka, hot water, and a tea bag. It was like make your own fajita night at a Mexican restaurant.

The bartender was dumbfounded that I wanted vodka mixed with iced tea.

Re: Sweetened or Unsweetened - 08/26/09 07:50 PM

I grew up on Sweet tea (yes, that capital S in on purpose) but over the years have learned to drink it less and less sweet. Now I make what I call "barely sweet" at home (for you other southerners, that's about 1/3c sugar for a pitcher of tea) and order half-and-half tea at restaurants. You just can't sweeten tea after it's cold. It doesn't work right. wink

Re: Sweetened or Unsweetened - 08/26/09 07:55 PM

< - - - - - Loves plain ole everyday ice tea, no sugar - so lemon just tea and tons of ice. grin Don't drink pop, just ice tea.

Now ice green tea needs one package of raw sugar but that is generally the only other type of ice tea I like. Gees, sound stuck in my way don't I blush

Re: Sweetened or Unsweetened - 08/26/09 08:09 PM

Truvia is a pretty good sugar substitute; seems pretty similar in taste.

I drink Arizona Green Tea diet decaf, the wife drinks that syrup called Southern Sweet Tea.

Oh, and whoever likes Sun Tea, there was something on TV a while ago that this was NOT a good way to prepare tea as it doesn't get hot enough to kill the germs and something about leaving it out and just letting it get warm aids in germ growth.

Sun Tea is awesome!

Especially when you dump in large amounts of sugar and mix it with your bare hand, trailer park style.

Oh, and don't forget to remove the tea bags.

unsweetened hot and cold tea for me

When in NC did have sweet tea- it's ok once in a blue moon.
Posted By: Peepers

Re: Sweetened or Unsweetened - 08/26/09 08:32 PM

But once the tea has sat out and is ready, don't you then take the tea bags out?

Otherwise, wouldn't they break down over time leaking tea particles out of the bag?

I'm surprised this thread has come this far with no mention of sweet-tea flavored vodka. I haven't ventured to buy a bottle yet but intend to soon, and mix it 50/50 with lemonade.

Normally I drink unsweetened tea with Splenda - I want to try the Truvia, but just haven't bought any yet. Occasionally I'll get in the mood for sweet tea, but order half & half.... I was raised with sweeeet tea, but can't handle it now.

I also love Starbucks Chai Tea Latte.
