Best Break-up Song or Album - 07/22/03 06:20 PM

Best Break-up Albums:

Lindsey Buckingham--Go Insane (All about him going insane after breaking up with his girlfriend)

Til Tuesday--Everything's Different Now (all about her break-up with Jules Shears)

Chris Isaak--Forever Blue (Without identifying who it was, Isaak made his mood clear with Forever Blue by including an intimate farewell letter in the liner notes to the lover who had dumped him. He later admitted it was a mistake to do this.)

Best Break-up song (OK, I admit it is probably not the best break-up song of all time, but it is a great song and named appropriately):

The Breakup Song
The Greg Kihn Band

We had broken up for good just an hour before,
Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah.
And now I'm staring at the bodies as they're dancing 'cross the floor.
Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah.
And then the band slowed the tempo, and the music gets you down.
Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah.
It was the same old song, with a melancholy sound.
Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah.

They don't write 'em like that anymore.
They just don't write 'em like that anymore.

We'd been living together for a million years,
Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah.
But now it feels so strange out of the atmospheres.
Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah.
And then the jukebox plays a song I used to know.
Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah.
And now I'm staring at the bodies as they're dancing so slow.
Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah.

They don't write 'em like that anymore.
They don't write 'em like that anymore.

Mmmm, now I wind up staring at an empty glass
Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah.
Cause it's so easy to say that she'll forget your past.
Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah.

They don't write 'em like that anymore.
No, they just don't write 'em like that anymore.
Oh, they don't write 'em like that anymore.
They just don't write 'em like that anymore.
They just don't, no they don't, no no, uh-uh,
They just don't write 'em like that anymore.
They just don't...(fades)

Un-Break My Heart - Toni Braxton (sad breakup)

Great songs about break-ups with humor:

  • Thank God & Greyhound You're Gone - Roy Clark
  • I'm Gonna Miss Her (The Fishin' Song) - Brad Paisley
  • Friends in Low Places - Garth Brooks
  • Kiss This - Aaron Tippin
  • She Got the Gold Mine, I Got the Shaft - Jerry Reed

I've also found that most Hank Williams songs can help work through the pain of a breakup - especially I'm so Lonesome I could Cry.

Why smash it if its in your cellar? Drinking it all would be much more vengeful.

Actually, to enjoy the horror in his eyes, I'd be sure to have some red wine on the floor...and plenty of glass, but that's a good point...perhaps some cheep red wine And I could move his upstairs to enjoy on my own.

Some Oldies...See if anybody remembers these

Crying-Gene Pitney
I Wish It Would Rain-The Temptations
Tracks of My Tears-Smokey Robin (seems like Motown has the knack for great break up songs)
And the Classic...
Walkin' After Midnight-Patsy Cline

I know there are alot of great blues songs out there too that will make you cry in your beer (or something stronger, if preferred). I'm not that much of a Blues expert to remember them.

How 'bout Glen Cambell's By the Time I get to Phoenix:

By the time I get to Phoenix she'll be rising
She'll find the note I left hangin' on her door
She'll laugh when she reads the part that says I'm leavin'
'Cause I've left that girl so many times before

By the time I make Albuquerque she'll be working
She'll prob'ly stop at lunch and give me a call
But she'll just hear that phone keep on ringin'
Off the wall that's all

By the time I make Oklahoma she'll be sleepin'
She'll turn softly and call my name out loud
And she'll cry just to think I'd really leave her
Tho' time and time I try to tell her so
She just didn't know I would really go.

The best breakup album is "Exiles" by Dan Fogelberg. Just about every song relates to leaving. He must have been going through a breakup when he wrote it. One summer of my life, I almost wore the CD out....

"I guess I showed her"-Robert Cray

"I walked up and moved right in, a single room with one big twin, there's a chest and mirrors, the shower's down the hall, room 16 ain't got no view, but the hot-plate's brand new, I guess I showed her.
She can have the house, she can keep the car, I'm just satisfied in this funky little motel room... I'm so mad, I can't stand it..."

My fiance sings the song about his former bride.

Re: Best Break-up Song or Album - 07/23/03 01:18 PM

how about:
Sitting on Top of the World (traditional)
lyrics as performed by Bill Monroe

It was in the spring one sunny day
My good gal left me Lord she went away
But now she's gone but I don't worry
Lord I'm sitting on top of the world

She called me in Dallas, in El Paso
Said come on, daddy, I need you so
But now she's gone but I don't worry
Lord I'm sitting on top of the world

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
Show me a woman a man can trust
But now she's gone but I don't worry
Lord I'm sitting on top of the world

The Mississippi River, long, deep and wide
The woman I'm loving is on the other side
But now she's gone but I don't worry
Lord I'm sitting on top of the world

[the next two verses were not on all Bill Monroe versions]
You don't like my peaches, don't you shake my tree
Get out of my orchard, let my peaches be
And now she's gone but I don't worry
'Cause I'm sitting on top of the world

Don't you come here running, holding out your hand
I'll get me a woman like you got your man
And now she's gone but I don't worry
'Cause I'm sitting on top of the world
