Yankee Stadium - Need Help

Yankee Stadium - Need Help - 06/14/11 06:18 PM

My husband and I fly into New York on Thursday - arriving at about 10:30. We just bought tickets to the 1:05 Yankees game; however I don't know what we're going to do with our luggage. I thought we could store at the stadium, but we can't. Does anyone have an suggestions? Now I'm afraid that we're going to lose the price we paid for the tickets - and that won't be a lot of fun!

Will the hotel hold them for you until you check in?

Re: Yankee Stadium - Need Help - 06/14/11 06:22 PM

Good idea, Deek! You'll might have to hustle to get to the hotel then the stadium, but that would work.

Re: Yankee Stadium - Need Help - 06/14/11 06:30 PM

Duchess,. drop them off at the Hotel, they will certainly hold them for you.

Or call the hotel Today and ask them what they recommend - be sure to speak to the manager or the concierge. They will recommend a courier or shuttle service

Re: Yankee Stadium - Need Help - 06/14/11 06:31 PM

There's no way we can get to the hotel and then back out to the stadium - I don't think anyway. We fly into LaGuardia and our hotel is on W35th street. We will have carry on only.

Thoughts? I'm really starting to panic here.

is there a bus or train station on the way? they usually have lockers.

Re: Yankee Stadium - Need Help - 06/14/11 06:32 PM

Skittles, call the hotel and ask them for advice. You could hire a limo for the day to pick you up at the airport and sit waiting with your luggage at the stadium until you're ready to depart. smile

Hey Jee's idea is perfect - call the hotel and talk to the concierge or manager.

Re: Yankee Stadium - Need Help - 06/14/11 06:33 PM

Don't worry, the airline will probably send your luggage to Boston anyway.

Re: Yankee Stadium - Need Help - 06/14/11 06:34 PM

Thanks. I've already written down their phone number and will make the call.

Re: Yankee Stadium - Need Help - 06/14/11 06:40 PM

OK - they said to bring the luggage to the hotel and then take the 'D' train from the corner out to the game. She said to take a cab <$35.00> to the hotel and it should take about 30-40 minutes. Looks like we'll be cutting it close, but if we miss the first few minutes it won't be the worst thing in the world. Right?

I'm so mad at myself right now for not checking a little further before I had my husband buy the tickets. Idiot Skittles - you're an idiot <whacks head>.

leave your luggage with a young man outside Yankee stadium, give him $20 to watch them and pick them up on your way out

My experience with cab drivers in NYC is they can get you from here to there quicker than you could ever imagine. You will not enjoy the ride and push the imaginary brake pedal in the back seat 100 times or so, but you will get there pretty quick.

Re: Yankee Stadium - Need Help - 06/14/11 07:46 PM

Thanks Pale. that's the way it was for us in San Francisco last year, too. We'll get there when we get there - and the hotel helped to calm me down a tad, too. At least we have almost 3 hours from landing <scheduled anyway> to the first pitch.

Go to the hotel first. Drop off luggage. You should get there about 11:30. You need to subway up to the Bronx. Take the 1/9 or 2/3 line to times square, take the shuttle over to Grand Cenral Station, then switch to the lexington avenue line, either 4, 5 or 6, I forget which one goes to stadium.

You don't want to take a cab to the stadium from the airport, even without the luggage issue. Subway is best way to go to and from. You'll make it. Subway ride is probably 30 minutes, no more from hotel.

Re: Yankee Stadium - Need Help - 06/14/11 09:01 PM

Of course, the unspoken assumption in all these scenarios is that the plane arrives at La Guardia on time.

Re: Yankee Stadium - Need Help - 06/14/11 09:11 PM

I'm keeping my fingers crossed on that one. It's a direct flight from Nashville so hopefully we will.

Thanks for all of the pointers everyone. I'm afraid the Subway system is going to be too much for me to follow.

Re: Yankee Stadium - Need Help - 06/14/11 09:07 PM

At least if you only have carry on you won't have to waste time in baggage claim.

Re: Yankee Stadium - Need Help - 06/14/11 09:52 PM

I was in NY a couple of weeks ago stayed in a hotel about a block off of Time Square, the subway is no problem. Remeber this:

Uptown is towards thr Bronx, Downtown is towards Brooklyn

Hello from New York! The best option is to go to the hotel and drop off your luggage. Go to the 34th Street Subway Station. Purchase a Metro Card at one of the machines (cash/credit card) in the station . The price for one way is $2.50 per person. (Buy a card for $10 so both of you can go round trip). Take the uptown “D” train to 161st Street (about 30 minutes) . The stadium is a block away.

Why do I feel like I’ve just written an operating procedure again.

Derek Jeter was placed on the 15- day disabled list today with a strained right calf:

Enjoy the game!

Thanks William. I will print this from work tomorrow. You've been a great help.

Re: Yankee Stadium - Need Help - 06/15/11 01:23 PM

Just some more info for you:

How to use the Metro Card on the subway: http://www.mta.info/metrocard/easyuse.htm#sub

Here’s the “D” train pamphlet. http://www.mta.info/nyct/service/pdf/tdcur.pdf

The “D” is an express train in Manhattan and local in the Bronx, and will make 8 stops from 34th Street: 42nd Street- Bryant Park, 47-50th Streets - Rockefeller Center, 7th Avenue, 59th Street - Columbus Circle, 125th Street, 145th Street, 155th Street, and 161st Street - Yankee Stadium. The subway runs every 10 minutes .

When you get off the subway at 161st Street, look for people wearing Yankee tee shirts/caps and just follow them one block to the stadium. (There may even be some Texas Rangers fans.)

New York City weather forecast:

If I didn't have a New Yorker escorting me on the subways, I would take a cab.

Re: Yankee Stadium - Need Help - 06/15/11 03:01 PM

Wow - actually that's not bad; although I was warned about traffic and having to 'sit' while heading to the game. Is 12 min. the norm?

As you can tell I'm just full of questions.

Re: Yankee Stadium - Need Help - 06/15/11 03:07 PM

Taking the subway to Long Island, when you think you are headed north to the Bronx - frustrating.

Paying a cabby from Iraq to get you to the game on time - priceless. I took a number of cab rides at the end of May in New York. Paid $39 for a 8.9 mile ride and $42 for a 11.9 mile ride.

The lowest tip one can choose is 20% when using the screen in the back seat. But it is fast....

Re: Yankee Stadium - Need Help - 06/15/11 04:07 PM

In a taxi you can see the city. I traveled subway most of the time when visiting my daughter and son-in-law who work there, but missed the real sites. Last trip was by taxi and with all of us paying one taxi fare, it was worth it! My 2 1/2 yr old grandson thinks he knows how to use that screen to pay, too! It was priceless.

New York Yankees- 3
Texas Rangers - 2

Have a safe trip back to your hotel on West 35th Street. And, don’t spend all your money in Macy’s Flagship Store on West 34th Street.

Re: Yankee Stadium - Need Help - 06/19/11 09:19 PM

Thanks guys. We got back this morning. The game was wonderful - just too much sun for me. Went up into the Empire State Building, walked around Central Park. Went downtown and saw the Statue of Liberty from across the bay - Wall Street - and Ground Zero. Ate lunch at Madison Park at the Shake Shack, saw The Addams Family on Broadway, and walked, and walked, and walked. We're both worn out, but had a really good time. Rode the subway several times - it's not too bad once you get your bearings.

Yes, but you can't really get close enough to see a whole lot now with the construction going on there.
