Fat cells expand when people consume more energy than they can burn. During weight loss, the cells shrink.

"The fat is a very specialized cell, and it takes basically the fat we eat and it stores it in form of triglycerides," said Fried, who researches how fat is deposited. "It's doing that for the purpose of releasing it when other parts of the body need it."

Humans carry about 10 billion to 30 billion fat cells. People who are obese can have up to 100 billion.

"If anyone of us overeats long and hard enough, we can increase the number of fat cells in our body," Fried said. "When we lose weight, we don't lose the number of fat cells."

So that would be the reason if we don't stay consistent with our healthy eating we expand back out to our old bodies?

Evidently so! I didn't know that. I guess once you get an amount, you always have them....lurking in the background just waiting to swell back up and ruin you again. Sounds encouraging.

That would explain why people gain the weight back fast and usually with extra pounds than when they started!

I'm a firm believer that maintaining weight is way harder than losing it!

Guess that's where lypo comes in handy.....

Bingo!, Its the only way to actually reduce the number of fat cells in a human body. Purely as an animal, we are still the primative from 10,000 years ago that lived in a feast or famine lifestyle. Our bodies are designed to allow us to live that lifestyle along with the inherent activity needed to gather the food and to pick and move to where the food is. Unfortunately the food is now in the freezer or the refrigerator!

Lypo freaks me out... how could anyone want that procedure done? :shivers:

I agree with you. Years ago I had a customer (who was actually in pretty good shape) who decided to have a little lypo done...she ended up dying during the procedure.

I'd much rather have all my fat cells and be alive to complain about them.

and why can't the skinny kids just add the cells they need...I am asking for Baconboy since I don't have the problem....

High metobolic rate. If you can force one to overeat enough, they would, but it requires a huge amount of food (spoken by former skinny kid).

How tragic! Somehow in my mind... it seems with all that "stabbin" they do with that device it would cause something in the body to be extremely damaged..

My husband weighs the same as when we met 25 years ago. I do not. nuff said.

But with lypo, you suck out cells but the remaining cells have the same capability to grow again. Then you'll just look at lopsided.
