June Compliance Conference

Along the lines of Swiggles ABA training post, who's all attending the ABA Compliance Conference in Chigaco this June? My management is going to wait to decide if I can go until they post their training topics line-up for this year at the end of February. I may have to do some groveling and promise to do a presentation when I get back.

I will be attending the CRA/Fair Lending Coloquium again this year in Orlando. I will try not to smile to much while there in November.

My boss tells me that I have to choose one, and since other compliance staff are going to the ABA RC Conference in June, I will probably choose the Colloquium in Nov.

I've been waiting for this.

I just registered for the conference so I'll need to check it out to begin planning which sessions will be top on my list.

The wife and I are going. It starts on our son's 4th birthday so we are trying to figure out how to work the details out.

I tried to register this morning but the ABA's site gave me attitutde. Guess I'll try again this afternoon on a different (newer and better) computer.

I registered for the conference but didn't see any place on the registration form to get tickets for the baseball game.

I got the information in a seperate email from the ABA. I haven't decided if I want to buy a ticket or not.

Doubt it... usually either go out with new or old acquaintances that evening.

Although we headed down to Schaumberg this past weekend, and I will say I thoughly enjoyed using my IPass rather than being gouged any more than I already was at the cash stops.

So, I have a question for fellow attendees...

Since so many conference organizers are now going green (like the ABA) and using electronic media for conference materials, how do you handle that? I do not have any kind of portable device like a laptop or iPad that my company provides. I downloaded the ABA's conference app onto my phone, but I really don't want to use my phone for the whole conference because it'll totally kill the battery. I'm bring my Kindle Fire with me for personal use, but really didn't want to use that, so I'm just curious what others do.

I use my Nook now for those type of events.

I was trying to figure out the same thing, Busy Bee. I like to take notes (handwritten) on presentations, so I might end up printing stuff.

I do have a tablet I could bring, not sure how long the battery will last though... Maybe I'll try it out one day this week. My laptop could prolly make it the whole day if I turn the wirelss off, but then I'm lugging that thing around.

When I attending the Conference last year, I decided which courses I found most interesting and most necessary. I made myself 1 booklet for each day - printing off materials for each class. I put in a report folder for each day and took that with me. Yes, there were some presentations I didn't have, but mostly I had everything I needed.

There will be printing kiosks on site as well in case you missed printing one that you really want and prefer to have it while in session. I printed some prior to going and had downloaded some on my Blackberry Tablet so they were handy if I decided to attend that session instead.

I am planning on printing what I can ahead of time because I like to take notes as well on presentation slides. I will also download the ap on my phone.

Maybe I'll do a mixture, print presentations for my 'first choice' sessions, then bring the tablet in case I end up at a different session.

You should expect the hosts to provide DVDs of all the materials or at least post them to their website immediately following the conference. That seems to be standard procedure these days.

The conference I was at a few weeks ago gave out iPads that were pre-loaded with specialized apps. I thought it was very convenient for tracking session schedules, viewing demos, communicating with other attendees, etc. ... but I still preferred to take notes with pen & paper.

I will probably bring the bank's iPad. I do like to make notes too so I might break down and make paper copies of the sessions I'm really looking forward to.

I don't know about other devices, but here are some iPad Apps you might want to consider for note taking:

For just quickly typing onto a blank page and you don't care about formatting, I really like iA Writer (I think it costs $1.99.)

If you want to annotate PDF documents, take a look at Adobe Reader (Free); Documents (also free, I think); or PFpen (not free).

I don't like using a stylus with the iPad, but if that's your desire, take a look at Bamboo Paper, Notes Plus or TopNotes.

Oh and FYI for those traveling into Chicago on Saturday, the following teams all have home games that day:

Cubs @ 3:05 PM (Wrigley)
White Sox @ 3:10PM (US Cellular)
Blackhawks @ 7:00PM (United Center)

Please plan your travel accordingly, as traffic near these locations gets all kinds of wacky around game time.

It's part of the app. If you fill out your 'profile' you can search for others and be visable to others. Then you can send 'friend request's.

I'm using it to help me stay in touch with my carpooling buddies.

That's the main reason I didn't get the Kindle Fire - you can't access the Google Play store. The app creator has to submit the app to Amazon's store separately, and a lot of them don't. There may be a way to root/hack the device to get access to the Google app store, depending on how technical you are, but I'm not sure since I just went with a different device instead.
