I saw a commercial for the new City of Bones movie and heard that it was based on a book series. I borrowed the first book in the Mortal Instruments series and am already half-way through it! It's pretty good and since I've seen the trailer, I don't have preconceived notions about what the characters look like. laugh

My daughter started reading those- she got about half way through the 1st book and decided that it might give her nightmares. She was given the whole series though so we'll see.

Gena Showalter's next Angels of the Dark book comes out in February, I preordered that. Then JR Ward's next BDB book comes out in March. THEN the next Lords book (Showalter again--I LOVE how fast she writes!) comes out in July.

Gonna be a steamy year! laugh

Last year I decided to read Tale of Two Cities again. We were forced, nearly at gun point to read it in HS and I truly despised it. So I decided that perhaps viewed through the window of time, that it would have deeper meaning and that I would better enjoy the lyric that is Dickens' writing....
Nope, still hate that book. laugh

Love Michael Connelly, especially the Harry Bosch series. Most (maybe all) of his books are set in the L.A. area, so that makes them interesting to me, besides the fact that he knows how to tell a story.

OK, I have to put in a plug for the series I'm currently listening to.

If you liked Hunger Games, give Lauren Oliver's series (starts with Delirium, Pandemonium is the 2nd, and Requiem is due out in a couple of weeks) a try. They are really good. Pandemonium is better than Delirium and the end of the book had me trapped in my car waiting to see what happened! I can't wait for Requiem now!

Two Years before the Mast, by Richard Henry Dana, Jr. (yes I know I read weird stuff)

Dana was a Harvard student who, in 1834, thought going to sea might cure his eye problems. The book is his true story of a fairly miserable experience. It's interesting to read his perceptions of California in a time when it still belonged to Mexico, and was very sparsely populated. He later became an attorney and abolitionist.

Started on "A Team of Rivals" (the book on which the movie "Lincoln" is based). It reminded me how much I enjoyed reading Shelby Foote's trilogy "Civil War" a few years ago and I switched to that. I started with my paperback copy and realized that my eyes aren't that good anymore. So, I bought it again, downloading it to the Kindle. As it's about 3,000 pages, I'll be busy for awhile. grin

Just finished Beyond the Beautiful Forever, by Katherine Boos. Non-fiction focuing on the lives of certain individuals living in the Mumbai slums. Every once in a while I like to get out of my fiction comfort zone. I usually read accounts of life in Africa or elsewhere. This time it was India. I came across true city slums where we visited Portugal one year. Riding a taxi out of Lisbon there was a virtual village set up along the hillside. Covered in shacks made out of all kinds of materials. I am sure Mumbai was 10 times worse but it takes your breath away to see this for the first time, esp. in a densely populated area. The book is to the point and is easy to read without being too preachy, from the author's perspective. You do get acquainted with a number of people. Boos spent about 3 years living in the area and working on this book. I won;t say too much more but it sheds a rather stark light on just how miserable some poeple's lives are and how, hope as they may, it doesn't appear they can escape their existance.

Just picked up Damned by Chuck Palahniuk on Saturday. First time in a while that I've actually bought a book. Not sure when I'll actually have a chance to open it up, and should probably finish the couple that I'm in the middle of now first, but I'm still looking forward to it!

Quote:
“Are you there, Satan? It’s me, Madison,” declares the whip-tongued thirteen-year-old narrator of Damned, Chuck Palahniuk’s subversive new work of fiction. The daughter of a narcissistic film star and a billionaire, Madison is abandoned at her Swiss boarding school over Christmas, while her parents are off touting their new projects and adopting more orphans. She dies over the holiday of a marijuana overdose—and the next thing she knows, she’s in "heck". Madison shares her cell with a motley crew of young sinners that is almost too good to be true: a cheerleader, a jock, a nerd, and a punk rocker, united by fate to form the six-feet-under version of everyone’s favorite detention movie. Madison and her pals trek across the Dandruff Desert and climb the treacherous Mountain of Toenail Clippings to confront Satan in his citadel. All the popcorn balls and wax lips that serve as the currency of "heck" won’t buy them off.

This is the afterlife as only Chuck Palahniuk could imagine it: a twisted inferno where The English Patient plays on endless repeat, roaming demons devour sinners limb by limb, and the damned interrupt your dinner from their sweltering call center to hard-sell you "heck". He makes eternal torment, well, simply divine.

Re: What are you reading...2013 edition! - 04/22/13 05:42 PM

There are two theories to arguing with women. Neither one works.

One morning, the husband returns the boat to their lakeside cottage after several hours of fishing and decides to take a nap.

Although not familiar with the lake, the wife decides to take the boat out.

She motors out a short distance, anchors, puts her feet up, and begins to read her book.

The peace and solitude are magnificent.

Along comes a Fish and Game Warden in his boat. He pulls up alongside the woman and says, 'Good morning, Ma'am. What are you doing?'

'Reading a book,' she replies, (thinking, 'Isn't that obvious?')

'You're in a Restricted Fishing Area,' he informs her.

'I'm sorry, officer, but I'm not fishing. I'm reading.'

'Yes, but I see you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment. I'll have to take you in and write you up.'

'If you do that, I'll have to charge you with sexual assault,' says the woman.

'But I haven't even touched you,' says the Game Warden.

'That's true, but you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment.'

'Have a nice day ma'am,' and he left.

MORAL:

Never argue with a woman who reads. It's likely she can also think.

I'm finally reading the Dark Swan Series by Richelle Mead. The first one was REALLY hard for me to get into, it took 2-3 tries. Now that I'm finished, I cant wait for my plane time tomorrow to read!

Re-reading Harry Potter (up to book 4.)

Just finished David Baldacci "The Forgotten". Total beach read, if you are looking for something for this summer.

Recently read "Off to Be the Wizard", which was fun.

Also went through Josi Kilpack's mystery series that are all named after desserts. They're OK - I liked that she didn't rush the endings and for at least the first 4, I couldn't guess right away who the villain was. They got a little formulaic in the next couple after that, but were still OK reads.

Re: What are you reading...2013 edition! - 05/14/13 01:45 PM

I'm still buried re-reading Foote's 3000 page odyssey on the civil war, but it inspired me to go back and read "Killer Angels" for a break. It's set at the battle of Gettysburg, but it's really about the men who were there. It's truly a beautifully written book. (Pulitzer Prize)

I'll also recommend a more recent book, "The Art of Racing in the Rain." Racing is only a metaphor and I initially struggled to accept the perspective of the story teller, but it too is an excellent read. It's not really a "guys" book, it was given to me by a woman and every woman I've recommended it to loved it.

Re: What are you reading...2013 edition! - 05/28/13 03:27 PM

I'll second Ken's recommendation for Killer Angels. I'm not much for historical non-fiction, but this book was really compelling. It's more about the people than the actual fighting.

I finished reading Wool not too long ago. It's an easy read, but very intersting and suspenseful. Perfect summer book.

Probably should be in the movie thread, but just saw the trailer for Ender's Game. Not sure they can match the book, but the trailer looks good.

Occasionally listening to "The Enclave". Like it so far, I think.

*Tribulation Force: The Continuing Drama of Those Left Behind 1996
*Nicolae: The Rise of Antichrist 1997
* Soul Harvest: The World Takes Sides 1999

I thought that 17 was the best one since 12, but 18 was such a disappointment that I now refuse to pay release price. If I can pick 19 (or any since then) up for <$6, I'll keep reading. Otherwise I'm probably done.

I'm not reading this, but my wife and I are pretty excited for the author. It's called The Life That Chose Us, and it's written by a teacher who has Tourette Syndrome. She's been a high school teacher for about 10 years, and during that time, has earned her PhD, written this book, and also taught college classes. I think she's been a great example to her students and peers of how to triumph in spite of an awkward condition. She's a co-worker and friend of my wife's and a wonderful person.

Re: What are you reading...2013 edition! - 07/11/13 02:48 PM

John Wells of the Alex Berenson novels is a good replacement...I've enjoyed his books.

Gabriel Allon of Daniel Silva's books is also a good substitute...

Cotton Malone of Steve Berry's is good as well

Jack Reacher of Lee Child's novel is also good, but not as good as those above

Sadly, no one will replace Flynn's Ironman...I loved those books

The older Reacher novels are quite good, but they've been declining over the last few. I haven't even been able to make myself pay for the most recent one.

Happy, I concur with all your recommendations. I'm on the second book of the John Wells series. I would add James Rollins "Sigma Force" series to that list as well. I have pre-ordered the Latest Silva book. Nelson Demille's "John Corey" thillers are entertaining as well.

Almost finished with The Imortal Life Of Henrietta Lacks. Non-fiction about how the woman's cancer cells were used/sold, etc. without her or her family's permission. Her cells, HeLa, used to test/develop cures, etc. Gives a wonderful perspective of the medical community during the 50s and on, esp. as regards the treatment of non-whites. Book deals with the ethical issues and the impact on her family as well as the positive things that came out of using her cells. Highly recommended for those who need a break from fiction.

I was thinning out my book shelf over the weekend, and I came across a book that really gave me the creeps years ago. And the story is true.

Since many of you are younger, you may not have read this book. If you have read it, you know what I mean about "creepy".

The book is "Small Sacrifices" by Ann Rule. It is such a good read. I started to re-read it last night and I hated to put it down. It is dark because it really happened...
Posted By: Xian Ngyuen

Re: What are you reading...2013 edition! - 09/10/13 02:15 PM

"Small Sacrifices" was about the Diane Downs case, wasn't it? Mother who shot her three children, then shot herself in the arm and claimed it was the result of a car-[censored].

Ann Rule has done a great job with "true crime" stories over the years.

Yes. She also wrote "Poisonwood Bible". Her writing is just so beautiful, and she takes on really interesting issues. Flight Pattern is sort of a "what if" scenario around global warming. She researched it pretty thoroughly to make sure her scenario was truly viable from a scientific point of view. Apparently her husband is an environmental studies professor.

Sometimes I like to go back and re-read older books that I haven't read in over a decade. I love most of Barbara Michaels books but most were written in the 80's or earlier. I get a kick out of the technology she mentions and how dated it is (nobody on cell phones, no internet). Currently re-reading Into the Darkness.

Just finished The Orphan Train by Kline. The context:

Between 1854 and 1929, more than 100,000 children were sent, via orphan trains, to new homes in rural America. Recognizing the need for labor in the expanding farm country, Brace believed that farmers would welcome homeless children, take them into their homes and treat them as their own.

I enjoy historical fiction, particularly when the setting is painstakingly accurate. This book, probably intended for teen readers, describes a chapter in American history that few people know about.

Just finished "The Greater Journey: Americans in Paris" by David McCullough. Really interesting - how Americans traveled to Paris for an education in the early years because there were no excellent schools in the USA at that time. Took it from around 1836 to after WWI.

Currently reading Clive Cussler's "The Mayan Secrets".

It's newer than Soft Target. It's a Bob Lee Swagger book, tied to the JFK assassination, came out around the same time as Max Allan Collins' Target: Lancer, a Nate Heller book also tied to the JFK assassination, but with a twist.

I was also thinking I'd go back and listen to the whole thing from the start again. That will have to wait until after I finish Horde though.

I definitely need to get some better books. The last 5 free Kindle books from Amazon were so terrible that I stopped reading them after about 10 minutes and deleted them. cry I just can't stand bad grammar, punctuation, and "horizontal polkas" that don't have anything to do with the storyline are just annoying.

Three different series that I'm reading right now will have their final books published within the next few months so maybe I'll go on a book fast until then. grin

Make sure you leave ratings/reviews on those, Sci. There's few things that annoy me more than to download a freebie with 25 5* ratings and glowing reviews only to discover it is riddled with the problems you describe. I suppose those authors must have all their friends and family leave ratings & comments without ever actually reading the books.

Re: What are you reading...2013 edition! - 12/02/13 02:57 PM

Okie Banker,

Frankly, some of it is gut wrenching. From the prologue: "I was the oldest of seven children; five of us would try to kill ourselves before the age of forty." If you read the book, it will become abundantly clear why that is true.

I read all of his books because I love the low country including Fripp Island and Beaufort. I also enjoy his writing and the unexpected patches of humor in the most unlikely of circumstances. In that setting, the book simply serves as the backstory for all that came before; it is not a stand alone tale of redemption.

I would not recommend it to anyone not already invested in Mr. Conroy's writing.

P.S. "Prince of Tides" was actually my favorite, but the casting in the movie confused me greatly. Who on earth would even consider Barbara Streisand over Blythe Danner? It simply wasn't credible. grin
