A complaint against use of a word

A complaint against use of a word - 01/22/13 08:26 PM

It drives me totally nuts when a person begins their side of the conversation with:

"Question"

Not, "I have a question" "Can I ask you a question?"
Just the word "Question" usually with the word drawn out as long as possible.

The practice is spreading throughout my bank and I am ready to smack the next person that says it!

Thank you for your time. That is all.

I will admit I say that to people.

And it totally makes me think of this song:

Question
Why is it that every time I turn on the radio
I hear the same five songs
Fifteen times a day
For three months

Re: A complaint against use of a word - 01/22/13 08:51 PM

Possibly you are hearing it so frequently in the bank because they have all discovered that if they don't preface the conversation by letting you know it is a question, you just stand there with a blank stare on your face? Whereas most people at some point come to realize a question is being asked, there are some who don't figure it out unless it is pointed out to them. Possibly they are trying to alert you so that you can actually formulate a response, rather than have them start over after stating it is a question.

Alternatively, when this occurs, you should start your reply with "answer" every single time...

My personal pet peeve is when someone asks "can i ask you a question?" to which point I always reply "you just did, do you have another you'd like to ask or was that it?"

My elemenatry school principal (a nun) would have replied, "I don't know; can you?" She beat into you the difference between 'can' and 'may'.

Since when did they become interchangeable? I think some head thumping should be put into place when they are used inappropriately.

Our IT area (offsite) sends an e-mail every day at about 2:00 and lists e-mails that have been picked up by the spam filter just to verify they aren't spam. Today I got one that said:

http://mylanguages.org/difficult_languages.php

Arabic, Cantonese, Japanese are said to be the hardest, based on the approximate learning expectations compiled by the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) of the US Department of State. Finnish, Hungarian, and Estonian are also among the hardest because of the countless noun cases. The Pronunciation is even harder than in Asian languages as they usually have long tong twisting consonants.

Re: A complaint against use of a word - 01/23/13 03:17 PM

It bothers me plenty when people aren't grammatically correct, it's bad enough in business emails, but I don't get how one can be off when speaking it. Seen and saw is a particular issue. We have a particular teller that also seems to think if she seen it in the past, then she seened it. crazy

That being said, I'm very much used to abbreviations and "text lingo", though I rarely use it myself. I don't have a problem spelling out "you", so "u" isn't necessary.

Imo, the problem is that in school we don't learn the "official" names of the tenses (at least I did not), we just learn how to use them (although it seems some people have not learned). All I remember is past, present, and future.

It wasn't until I took Spanish that I learned officially about present progressive, and past perfect, and future perfect progressive. I feel as if officially learning these in English would have made Spanish that much easier.

Agreed! College Spanish was the first time I knew something called the subjunctive even existed!

English has all these tenses, we just don't learn what they are (called) when we're taught the language.
