Brag On Your Kids Thread - 05/07/13 03:34 PM

Just have to brag a little...

My oldest son (12, rising 8th grader) was invited to march with the high school band percussion section next fall. Yes, I am a proud band momma. grin

My daughter, mother of 2 little ones, was offered and accepted a job with a new company(also in NYC)a couple weeks ago. The last place would give her matching money, but not the title because she was moving up the ladder way too fast for a 27 yr old. I don't know how she manages even with the support of her fireman husband. But I am so proud of her!
My son spent 8 yrs in the Air Force and has numerous metals of valor. He now helps others as an Critical RN in VA.

Our 7 year old daughter allowed me to put earrings back in her ears again, after 3 years and the holes hadn't closed up.

And my husband survived our 11 month old daughter getting her ears pierced. The brag is on the 11 month old, she cried but was over the "traumatic" incident in less than a minute.

(Funny part, our 4 year old son wanted his ears pierced like his sister until he saw the baby getting her ear's pierced and he said "Nah, I'm good..)

The son ran his 2nd 5k this weekend. Beat his time from last year by 4 minutes. And this year's was in the pouring rain and he had to tie his shoes three times during the race. I asked him why he didn't double knot it, he said he didn't think of that till the tird time.

When he was done he asked for a donut, so we stopped and asked for the biggest donut they had. It was a normal glaze, but fit inside a sheet cake box.

He said, that would do. laugh

My 9 year old daughter received a beebee gun this spring. She was a better shot than her older brothers which I thought was most impressive. However I really have to brag on her since this weekend we took them to a family member's house for some target shooting with hand guns. First time ever to shoot a hand gun and she went 6 for 9 at 17 yards and 9 for 9 at 10 yards.

I'm thinking maybe we should look into competition shooting.

Good thing about that, he is a diabetic, so we are very happy about that. Plus the wage is pretty darn good!

He's a junior in college studying Accounting, and he just secured a summer internship with a huge corporation making over $20 per hour, full time, for the entire summer. I'm so proud of him, I could just burst a button. I made him laugh by tearing up at the news and saying I remember holding him for the first time when he was just 3 days old when I drove home from college myself!

Thanks.

Luckily the baloons flew, just kept low.

It was cold, but sunny, and we were shielded by a hill behind us along Central Park West, so it was not too bad.

Luckily, while on the way into the city, my sister got a call that a friend of her husband got us grandstand tickets at the beginning of the parade route. It was great to not have to fight for a spot along the curb.

My step-son left this morning for Nationals for BPA (Business Professional of America). He is a junior in high school and one of 2 is his school that made it to Nationals. His competition will be in computer security.

Unfortunately, his school district chose not to support these 2 kids and they have had to pay for the entire trip and registrations themselves (ok, meaning we did). They even refused at first to allow the teacher who runs the after school club to have the days off or pay for her sub. I think their tune would have been different if it would have been a sporting event....

My son tried out for a community theatre production of The Wizard of Oz. Apparently where this is being held their community theatre is a big deal. My son has wanted to be The Scarecrow since he was a munchkin at the play in high school; however he didn't get that part. He did, however, get the Tin Man. While he's a tad disappointed he's thrilled also. It will be a big time commitment - practice 5 nights a week about 40 miles from where he lives.

Yes, I'm a very proud mother. He's also getting ready to close on his first home.

My daughter made the Dean's List for the spring semester while working 2 jobs. There were sometimes she went weeks without a day off. Most Fridays worked all day at the bank and then that evening at the pizza shop. She leaves for main campus the last week of August (an hour away) but will still be working Fridays and Saturdays.

I'm not sure if I am more proud of her grades or her work ethic at this point. The fact that she is working hard and paying some of her own expenses makes me feel better about trying to help her get through school with as little debt as possible.

Soccer isn't his sport of choice. (Baseball and Basketball are 1,2) He only joined the soccer team cause they were needing players and his Best Friend is on the team. I encouraged him to be goalie to protect his knees and ankles from injury.

It is funny, cause when he comes home from a game, he will run 2 miles, cause he feels he didn't get enough action at the games. laugh

My 16 year old son just finished up fair season. This was his first year taking an animal and he took a steer (Go big or Go home, he said!). He placed 3rd in the Market Class, got Grand Champion in Showmanship, 2nd in Herdsmanship (Animal Stall Cleanliness), and was able to participate in the Round Robin competition (where he also had to show a sheep, goat, horse, and hog). I am really really proud of him and how hard he worked. He'll make at least $4,000 profit...not too shabby for a teenager! He's planning on paying off the balance owed to Great Grandpa for his pickup truck and using the rest to buy next year's steer calves. Mom and Dad are proud!! smile

My son wants to be a fire fighter and the district offers a Fire Sciences program that takes the place of PE and math. It's an outstanding program. He spends every afternoon at the fire station and when's he's done, he'll be certified to fight wild lands fires and a couple other types of fires that I can't remember right now. Anyway, he was named Captain yesterday for this school year. They don't typically give that position to a first year student, but since he has taken the summer program twice and is involved in the local search and rescue team, he was given the role. Really proud of him for this accomplishment! I told him it'll look really good on a resume (trying to find a job now) and when he applies to the state's Fire Training Academy after high school. I am so, so grateful that he's got some direction at a young age and knows what he wants to do. He seems to be so focused on becoming a firefighter and paramedic that it keeps him in line and away from the "party scene". Don't get me wrong...he can get himself in trouble for things like lying or for being disrespectful or for not doing what's asked around the house, but overall, I am so blessed that he's got his head on straight! It makes parenting a teenager a little easier! smile

Tomorrow I get to see my son in 'The Wizard of Oz' as the tin man. He told me that last night they did a free preview for military families from Ft. Knox and it was amazing. He's pumped and ready to go and said he'll miss it when it's over next weekend.

Thanks guys - the play was amazing - all of them. There was a cast of 111 performers - both adult and children - and many were professionals. Even the dog that played Toto did well (imagine a 3 pound yorkie). They've got four more performances and then they're done.

(But, like a lot of super smart peeps, he sometimes lacks common sense - his father and I have done the palm to forhead routine many times)

Congrats. If he's like the kids of some of my coworkers, he'll want to go to the most expensive of the four. I don't think common sense develops until sometime later in life.

Re: Brag On Your Kids Thread - 11/06/14 06:03 PM

My son was late to school today. I wouldn't normally consider this "bragging" but the reason he was late makes this mom proud. There was a bad accident that happened at a busy intersection and no first responders were there yet. Since my son has his basic EMT national certification he was able to jump out and assist until the ambulances got there. He said the person had a possible broken neck and was bleeding. He carries a bag in his truck with basic medical supplies so he had what he needed. At 17 years old, he is so focused on becoming a firefighter and paramedic and I'm glad he knows what to do in a situation like this and was able to help someone in need!

That is awesome Busy Bee. I am an EMT and volunteer in our small community. I applaud the young people for considering this area and going for it.
The small communities in our area struggle to keep their ambulances in service due to the lack of volunteers.

Re: Brag On Your Kids Thread - 12/02/14 10:40 PM

My 12 year old son shot his first buck today. I was sitting with him in the woods. He waited patiently for the buck to step into a good shooting lane and when I gave him the word he sqeezed off a perfect shot. It was an old 8 point buck with many battle scars. Some don't understand, but for us deer hunting is a right of passage and a way of life - school is actually closed the first two days of the season.

Re: Brag On Your Kids Thread - 12/05/14 03:51 PM

Congrats TJ and to your son. Our kids get the first day off for Deer Season.

I just got back from Deer hunting. I didn't get one, but the son got his first deer (He's 16, been hunting with me 4 years, but this was the first year I wasn't standing by his side). Nice big 6 point (would have been 8, but the rear tines had broke off during rutt). Pretty proud pappa, he got it with one shot.

I was on the next ridge over, could see one coming up to him. Before going into the woods, his gun jammed, (It was my grand fathers Ithica 3700 featherlite 12 gauge pump, and if you don't pump it with authority it will jam).

Well, I heard him shoot the first shot, heard the gun shuck, then no more shots for about 20 seconds. I was thinking, dang gun jammed again, but then I heard the next shot and a resounding "YEAH!", like he had just struck out the last batter in the bottom of the 9th to win the world series. So, I figured he must have got it.

So I walk over to where he was standing and he points to the bottom. He said there were two deer, a Buck and Doe. His first shot was at the doe, but he missed, and then he saw the buck and shot the second time.

So, we will be having "beef' this winter. smile

My daughter got her first deer years ago when she was 16 with her trusty 1998 Saturn coupe. We're not a hunting family, but I'm glad the rest of you are, because those critters, though beautiful, are a hazard. I'd be happy to help anyone consume any extra deer sausage.

My husband, son, brother in law, and BIL's hunting partner are planning an elk hunting trip to Colorado next year. Should be an excellent trip for them!

Re: Brag On Your Kids Thread - 12/05/14 04:47 PM

That's cool. The gun my son used, was used by my Grandpa, who traded it to my dad for a springfield, cause the Ithica was "too fancy" for him. Dad used it and passed it down to me, and my son is now using it.

Re: Brag On Your Kids Thread - 12/05/14 05:33 PM

The last deer I took myself was before the concept of social media. I had posted pictures of my son with his buck and I guess did not think about some people finding it disturbing or offensive to view pictures of the results of a successful hunt. Having grown up in an area where hunting is so much a way of life, I forgot that some do not share the same sense of tradition and pride.

My daughter was even a little upset by the fact that her brother "shot a poor deer in front of his (the deer''s) family". I tried to explain to her that deer don't live forever and that there are no nursing homes in the woods. When deer reach a certain age, they will eventually suffer a long and painful death from starvation in the wild. I also tried to explain that without population management through hunting there would be many more car accidents and much more crop damage to local farmers. This deer provided over 80 pounds of meat for us (excluding my daughter of course) to enjoy throughout the year.

You can never really change a persons perception of hunting, but at least maybe you can come to a mutual respect and understanding.

My son used a single shot CVA youth rifle in .243 caliber with a 3x9 Thompson Center Scope. It is a nice little gun I picked up this summer that I will probably end up using once he graduates to something a little bigger. It's nice and compact, light weight and incredibly accurate.

Re: Brag On Your Kids Thread - 12/05/14 05:42 PM

from NPR

When a leafy plant is under attack, it doesn't sit quietly. Back in 1983, two scientists, Jack Schultz and Ian Baldwin, reported that young maple saplings getting bitten by insects release a spurt of chemicals that float through the air. You and I wouldn't notice, but these chemicals carry a slight odor that neighboring plants can detect. It's a little like a silent scream.

If a simple bug can get a plant to scream can you imagine what a deer chopping on several leaves will do to a poor defenseless plan.

I could not agree with you more! We believe that hunting is necessary for conservation of the environment. For my family, we do not "trophy hunt". We hunt strictly for the meat it can provide our family. Fortunately, my son did not face any backlash for posting pictures on social media of his successful hunt, but I know several of his buddies did.

Modern rifle season is closed in our area but there are some areas that are still open for late archery. We live up one of the canyons surrounding our town and we frequently see deer near our home. When my son came home from work around 9:30 last night, he said there was a massive 6-point buck and a 5-point buck in our driveway. Those 5 and 6 points were on one side, so it was 12 and 10 total. I'm guessing the trucks we've seen parked along the canyon road for the last few days are out looking for these guys!

Yesterday a friend of mine texted me to tell me what a kind, caring child I have raised. My friend was substitute teaching for another grade and my 8 year old son walked over to say hello and visit with her. Raising boys is hard. Raising polite boys who act like real human beings is extra hard. Proud that some of my words are sinking in.

Re: Brag On Your Kids Thread - 02/10/15 04:27 PM

I love that CompliantOkie! That is really something to be proud of.

Here is my first entry to this thread:
In honor of her 10th transplant anniversary my daughter requested toys for the children at Lurie Children’s Memorial Hospital (her transplant hospital) and also for the children at the Ronald McDonald house (her home away from home).

The kids at her school rose to the challenge. They collected over 280 toys! And we delivered them to the hospital and Ronald McDonald house last week.

Her school really encouraged this project. She went from class to class educating the students on immunesuppression, organ donation, and the liver. And each morning she was allowed and encouraged to do the announcements with an "ad" for the drive. The self confidence she has after the whole experience is amazing. Just amazing.

The school board has invited her to come to their next meeting to honor her.

My daughter FINALLY bought a new car, at age 30, so I can finally stop paying insurance etc on the 2002 Honda that I thought she would just be driving through college.

I had to laugh as she told me about buying it. She had bids from four dealers. She took the 2002 to CarMax and got a written offer so she'd have leverage dealing with the trade in. When the F&I guy tried to sell her a maintenance plan, she walked out of his office and into the service department, got a quote on every item of maintenance for the first 36 months, and then asked him if he really thought his plan was a good deal. She's a brutal negotiator, like her mom, not me. I have sucker tattooed on my forehead.

My son is the sponsor of a club at the high school where he teaches. Yesterday he took the club members to the Ronald McDonald House in Louisville. Some of the kids baked for the patients living there and others cleaned. He said the students loved it and wanted to know if they could go back. He's trying to instill giving to others to the students. I'm extremely proud!

Good day in the household:

Daughter is trying to get into two programs at her School: (Plan A: Diagnostic Medical Sonography , Plan B: RadTech) . Yesterday she interviewed and was accepted into the RadTech program. So she has a fall back if plan A fails.

Son, pitched a no hitter yesterday in game one of a double header Pitching Line 3BB 9K. Did not allow a ball out of the infield.
In the second game he hit a 3 run HR to win the game 9-6.

It was awesome, he came to the plate, two guys on (2nd and 3rd) and no outs. The other teams coach called a time out and went to the mound. They were talking about walking my son and you can here the pitcher saying "I can get him". 2 pitches later the ball flew over the left field fence.

This year, the studio she dances at is putting on their 50th Anniversary production of The Wizard of OZ and she will be Dorothy for their Friday night recital and then will be performing in her group dances on Saturday night.

I am so proud of her. She's been dancing for 4 years, and loves every minute of it. And,even though she is now rehearsing 3 nights a week, she is also an A student at school. I am one proud mama smile

Re: Brag On Your Kids Thread - 05/04/15 04:41 PM

Too cool Cash! I remember those days.

My "little boy" who used to do the same thing
just got his ACT score back and he scored 30!

Saturday was another good day for the boy.
Friday he got back from State Baseball tourney. He didn't do that great at states, but the coach's wife who is also a teachers aid came up to us and told us how great a kid we had. Said, He talks to all the kids, not just the "Cool ones", he is very respectful, ALL the time. Said that some kids act good when the teacher is in the room then like a horses behind when the teacher leaves, but our son is constantly good.

Then Saturday morning the track coach called, said the team got hit with the flu and wanted to know if my son could step in. So, my son who is always willing to help said sure. He won the 400 dash. placed 2nd in discus, 3rd in shot and 5th in long jump.

The coach afterwards, said to us, man I would sure like to have him all the time, he is such a physical specimen and great kid!

Yeap, feeling pretty proud of the guy! Not so much on the physical, but the character scores.

DD Regs.....makes you feel so proud when someone compliments your child's behavior and character.

I was at a get-together at a friend's over the weekend. My little guy, who's going to be 5 yrs old next week, made a some new friends while we were there. One of the other little boys got hurt when he collided with one of the older kids. My son saw him crying and went over by him and his mom to see if he was ok and give him a hug. It was witnessed by a friend of mine and he told me how sweet that was and that I should be proud of being a good mom and teaching him right. That definitely was a proud mommy moment.

On another note, my 2nd oldest son received his official promotion to Sargeant in the Army on Saturday! Another proud mommy moment!

The son had a Doctor apt for a shoulder injury from baseball. He is going into his Sr year and is considering entering the fields of Sport Medicine or becoming a PA, a DO or a Chiropractor.

So, when he was referred to the Sports Med Dr from his family Doctor, we learned that he is his Family Docs favorite patient. The Sports Med Dr said, "Dr XXXX said to take care of you, cause you were her favorite patient, you do realize she has thousands of patients and has never referred to any of them as her favorite" "You must be pretty special".

He then proceeded to question our son about his future plans, (Spent like an hour with him) and when he got done, looked at us and said, "You have a special child there and should be proud of the job you have done raising him right" "I can see why he is Dr XXXX favorite"

Yeap, pretty proud papa smile

Just to give you a taste of his personality. Before going into the dr, they make you fill out this huge questionnaire. At the end of the it, was a section that asked, "Are their any other questions or concerns you have?". My son put in that box, "Yes, how many licks does it take to get to the tootsie roll center of a tootsie pop?"

So, at the end of our session with the Dr, he is rapping things up and my son said, "You didn't answer my final question", they dr turned to him and said, "Oh, that's right, I believe the answer you are looking for is 14."

My son replied, "Interesting, my research said it is 759".

The Dr laughed.

We celebrated a very glum 16th birthday together that evening in 2001.

Since then he's grown up, gotten out of college after 5 years, has been mustered out of a 5-year enlistment in the Marine Corps with two frontline deployments to Afghanistan as an 0331 machinegunner , and is now pursuing a career as a fire fighter.

Happy birthday, Gavin!

Your son richly deserves thanks as well for choosing a career in law enforcement. If he loves his work and you recognize the quality of his work enough that you are proud of him then he's a winner. Both the field of law enforcement and society itself could use a lot more like him. May the Lord protect your son.

Re: Brag On Your Kids Thread - 03/14/16 09:10 PM

Congrats to your daughter (and you, Aggie). Vet school is extremely hard to get into, and to be accepted to 2 wow!!!

My daughter graduated in 2014 with a degree in wildlife biology (she wanted to go to vet school, but alas, chemistry killed her desire). She got a nice high-pay job in an unrelated field and hated every minute of it.

She accepted a job last Friday as a vet assistant. Pay is half as much but now she gets a chance to follow her dream.

Re: Brag On Your Kids Thread - 03/14/16 09:13 PM

Congrats to your daughter, Aggie. Vet school is harder to get into than medical school. My son had thought about becoming a vet but inorganic chemistry got him (like Robin's daughter). He's a high school biology teacher and loves it!

I have to brag on my son again! Yesterday, he had an interview with the owner of the firefighting company he's working for this summer and he will be starting out as an Engine Boss during the summer wildfire season! As an EB, he'll have a crew of firefighters that will work under his authority. It's a HUGE responsibility for an 18 year old and typically isn't something that is awarded to a first year firefighter but the company owner said he's mature enough to handle that and he had great references that confirmed it. My son has been working towards this since he was 14 and has plenty of experience in fighting fires and Search and Rescue operations. smile I'm so proud of his passion for helping others and the drive he has to go after what he wants

Re: Brag On Your Kids Thread - 04/18/16 03:26 PM

The boy has 8 more baseball games left in his high-school career. He is tied right now for all time Home Run Leader. He leads the Triple category (by 6) and needs 10 more RBIs and 10 more Doubles to take the lead in those categories. I told him to stop at second on his shots in the corner to reach the Double lead laugh

He almost had a Grand-slam Saturday. He hit it to strait away center field. The outfielder caught it on the warning track and ran into the fence. Had he pulled it to left it would have been out of the park. mad

His next at bat he hit it the same place and it bounced out for a ground rule double. He has had a great career, gonna miss watching him play.

This is my favorite thread to read!

We're in full swing baseball mode here. 4-5 nights a week from now until July and I couldn't be happier. My oldest (9) pitched the final inning after Saturday afternoon after 6 straight hours of play. He struck a couple kids out and then walked several in a row. What I'm proud about though, is that after the game he went to the coach and asked what he was doing wrong and genuinely listened to the instruction. Went home and worked on swinging his leg out straight when he throws. IDK if he'll get to pitch again but he took the opportunity to learn something new and get instruction and that's the best part of team sports!!

Well, he went 0-2 last night, struck out once, and hit the cover off the ball down third, but right at the 3rd basemen. Was walked then hit by a pitch.

On the other hand, he was the starting pitcher last night, and he was definitely on his game there. This was a warm up start for our big rival game Thursday. Last night he pitched 3 inning, struck out 7, walked none, only threw 37 pitches.

Re: Brag On Your Kids Thread - 04/25/16 12:50 PM

My daughter had to miss the first day of tournament play for her travel team (school team commitment come before travel team) so she was listed as a sub for day 2. The team was holding a much better team to zero runs when they finally woke up and started playing hard. Coach put my daughter in at Right Field and she KILLED it. She didn't miss a single pop fly and no one scored after she got on the field. She play Short on the school team and had complained to me one day about being in the outfield and I told her at this level, games are won and lost in the outfield. Suck it up and do your job. smile

We ended up losing but Saturday they lost 15-0 to that team and Sunday the loss was 5-0.
Posted By: DD Regs

Re: Brag On Your Kids Thread - 04/25/16 01:50 PM

Cool!

Well the boy didn't get a HR so he is still chasing that record. Had a double header this weekend.

Won both games. First game won 7-5. The boy had the game winning 2 run triple in the top of the 7th. He hit the ball over the center fielder's head that one hopped against the wall. (On a normal field would have been a HR) He went 3-4, had the triple and the 2 RBI.

Second game, we won 22-2. He went 3-4, 2 doubles and a triple. The last double was a 3 run shot that hit the wall 3 feet up in the air at the 325 mark. This is a minor league field they play on 315 down the line and 375 center field. Eight-foot walls. Heck of a shot, any of our normal fields it would have been a home run.

Well, he did it, hit the record breaking HR to tie the game in the first game of the tourney. Cleared a 8 foot wall at the 325 mark. When I went to get the ball, there was a man walking with it and tried waving me off.

I said, "I want that ball!" then explained to him why. He gladly gave it to me. He said it cleared a car sitting across the road behind the wall. So, it was about a 365 shot.

Re: Brag On Your Kids Thread - 05/13/16 04:11 PM

This past week, my son has been house and dog sitting for my parents while they are on vacation with my brother's family. I went over there last night to check the house and make sure everything is going okay. He has had a friend staying there with him, which my folks had said was fine. Well, my son is growing very frustrated because all his friend is doing is sleeping and eating. His friend is almost 20 years old, doesn't go to school, and doesn't have a job. My son and this friend were considering getting an apartment at the end of the summer. I sat down with my son last night and had a conversation with him. He expressed his frustration and said there's no way he'd get an apartment with this guy because he's so lazy and he knows he'd end up having to cover all the expenses. It was one of those "a-ha" moments for my son and it was good for me to see that he's making wise decisions and has been able to look far enough into the future to know it wouldn't be a good idea to live with this guy.

I also found out that my son went over to my grandma's house yesterday to check on her and make sure she was doing okay. My mom is usually over there everyday and my son was concerned that grandma was lonely since my mom has been gone. I hadn't asked him to check on her either. It really warmed my heart to know that he was thinking of her and made an effort to go visit her. He also went around her yard to see what trees and bushes need trimming so he can come back and get that done for her. Grandma was really excited to see him and couldn't wait to tell me.

Sometimes I wonder how well we've raised him, but moments like the ones yesterday give me comfort! Three weeks from today he'll be a high school graduate and will be leaving the next day to fight fires all summer. Mom is a little emotional! smile

Re: Brag On Your Kids Thread - 10/28/16 08:00 PM

Not sure if this is a brag or not, but it's entertaining nonetheless!

My 19 year old son needs his brakes on his truck repaired and he needs new tires. We've told him this set of tires is on him and he needs to purchase them himself. Last night, he was trying to figure out budget and scheduling to get his truck in to the shop. I couldn't help but laugh when he let out an aggravated sigh and said, "Ugh! Why can't I go back to being in high school? Life was so much easier being a kid!" He was so anxious to "grow up" and be an adult and now he's realizing what that means! I refrained from saying "Told ya so!"

When I told my dad, he started laughing and reminded me that I said the same thing. When I laughed, Dad said, "Is that because you told him not to be anxious to grow up? Or because his words sound very familiar?" I said, "Both!!" laugh

My 19 year old passed the pack test for the Department of Natural Resources on Saturday. They have to walk (not allowed to run) 3 miles in 45 minutes or less while carrying a 45 pound pack on their backs. It seems like a simple task until you feel the pack they have to wear! Wow! That sucker is heavy!!

He begins his career with them on May 1st as a crew boss. They have a couple weeks of refresher training (he's already certified) and then they'll be ready to go when the fire season hits. He will be based about 2 hours north of home, so at least he's close enough that we can see him on his days off!

I'm very proud of him for pursuing this passion of his, but it's also bittersweet when we have to let our kids grow up and become the adults we raised them to be!

Re: Brag On Your Kids Thread - 05/18/17 04:02 PM

That's an awesome way for a 14 year old boy to spend his summer.

My 32 year old daughter leaves Saturday for a two week trip to Croatia and Bosnia. On the way there, she has one day stops in Lisbon and Venice. She's traveling by herself, and taking everything she needs in a backpack. She's staying in Airbnbs and hostels. She been planning the trip for months, with every detail in Excel. She came up with this idea after seeing a picture on the Internet of the Stari Most bridge in Mostar, Bosnia. She'll also see some of the Game of Thrones locations in Croatia.

We encouraged our kids to be adventurous, but we might have pushed it too far.
Posted By: Little Miss BSA

Re: Brag On Your Kids Thread - 05/19/17 06:52 PM

At least she's 32, and probably a bit more experienced...my 20 year old is planning a similar trip in that she wants to travel with all her essentials and needs in a backpack around Europe by herself. She is currently planning all the details and has started her savings fund so she can hit the road by next summer. She wanted to do it this summer but I reminded her how much $$ she would need as I wasn't funding her expedition. Normally I would also encourage her to be adventurous and see the world and do all of these things while she's young before all of life's responsibilities start etc. but the world (almost anywhere you go) these days is in such turmoil and unrest has become so unpredictable etc. All I know is that if this trip does come to fruition I will not sleep a wink next summer.....

Can I brag about my bonus daughters for a minute? We had the girls with us this weekend and my 13 year old bonus daughter had an assignment for health class where she had to interview a parent and get their answers about love, dating, marriage, and healthy relationships. She chose to interview me rather than her dad or her mom. It warmed my heart that she wanted to know my opinion on the subject! It really helped open that door to be able to communicate and she feels like she has a safe place to go when she needs dating advice.

Then, yesterday, before we took the girls back to their mom's house, the youngest one decided to make a gift for her sister's upcoming birthday. She is very artistic and creative. She made her a really cute picture by taking pebbles of different sizes and gluing them on to paper to make a really cute scene of a girl sitting on a bench under a tree. She asked us to get it framed before sister's birthday. I'm very impressed with her creativity!

Just over a month ago my daughter suffered an injury playing softball resulting in her losing her top 4 front teeth. Yesteday practiced started for Sr. League and she was right out there with her team. No fear.

I am drawn to post but maybe not for the usual happy reasons one would brag on their children about. My daughter has faced much adversity in the last 2 years and even though she has had many obstacles to overcome she has prevailed. She moved and took a new job (substantial pay cut) so her husband could take a job he had always dreamed about, when there was not enough money she got a second job, husband changed jobs in two weeks and then found another job in a different state (position of a lifetime) didn't keep that job either, marriage deteriorated, went to counseling by herself, made extremely difficult decision to divorce after 1+ year of marriage. She took a new position in same company in different town, could not find a place to live because of housing shortage and suitability; bought an RV to live in. Found temporary housing for her animals. She is so strong but doesn't see it, love her to pieces; what doesn't kill you truly makes you stronger. Heart her determination.

Wow, your daughter has really had some tough times. It sounds like she made the right decision to move on from a guy who was not ready for adulthood. I hope she's not blaming herself for her struggles.

I'd like to brag on my kids and say that they will be doing all the yardwork this weekend for father's day...however, they haven't any year in the past so I don't think they will this year, so I am unable to brag! eek

My nine-year-old daughter had a stroke at birth and neurologists told us that IF she every walked, her legs would be inflexible and stiff. At 19-months, she toddled across the exam room with a normal gait, much to the amazement of her doctors. My husband and I encourage her to try any physical activity she wants, and so far, we've gone through karate, dance, basketball, tumbling, and swimming. This week, she participated in her first swim meet, and earned a first place in her age group for the breaststroke, her favorite. Look out, 2024 Olympics!

My daughter landed her first teaching job - she will be teaching 2nd grade this coming school year at a local charter school. She is very excited as she has wanted to be a teacher since she was in pre-school.

That is great! 2nd grade is my wife's favorite grade to teach!

Thomas - I hope she enjoys teaching as much as my son does. He's starting his sixth year and still loves it.

Congrats to your daughter, Thomas. My sister-in-law taught second grade her entire career at the same school. She taught several generations in the same families. She loved her career.

My son closed on and moved into his new condo 40 minutes from his previous house. This will cut his commute time by about an hour a day. I'm very proud of him for having the ability to sell his house and move to where his new job is located.

He'll be so happy with his new commute (and probably no yard work?!).

Right - going from a half an acre (paid a neighbor to do it) - to no yard work.

My Son was part of a small group of kids (6-8) from his school that won an international science contest to design an experiment that will be done at the south pole this summer. The only other chosen experiment was from Belgium.

according to the teacher it was his idea, too! Very proud of the kid!

Re: Brag On Your Kids Thread - 05/07/18 06:11 PM

It's been a year since my daughter had a fly ball hit her in the face and do major damage to her mouth while playing for her Jr. High Softball team. This years she is finishing out the season as a starter playing center, short and pitcher for JV. She has also been asked to join a summer tournament team for Varsity players next year.

I'm not sure I could have even stepped on the field again but she loves the game.

Re: Brag On Your Kids Thread - 05/07/18 08:12 PM

Brave Girl, cheekEE! Congrats to her.

My son is buying his first home, a condo in Chicago. I'm happy he's finally getting settled down. He's 35 and a newlywed. He spent a lot of time after college enjoying life and traveling, including spending two years in Korea. He really was not ready to settle down at 22, but he is now. I had an 8 and a 6 year old and we were building our second home at his age. It's a three bedroom, and he made his mother happy by saying that they will have a room for us any time we want to visit.

Thanks you two.....i didn't attend (i know, bad dad).....i hate to fly and i would have just flown up and immediately flown back, so i told him i'd take him on a trip this summer instead (to a domestic destination of his choice; probably somewhere where he has job interviews lined up.....say a Nashville or Atlanta possibly).

Re: Brag On Your Kids Thread - 06/01/18 01:27 PM

Congrats RJ, it's great to see our kids succeed!

My daughter just finished her first year teaching yesterday. She taught second grade this past year and in a few weeks begins work as a special education teacher in a school for autistic children.

My son's last day of school was yesterday and he begins his second year working at the community pool next week. He has done nothing but whine about having to work "All the time" this summer (it's 4 hours a day, 5 days a week). Hopefully getting his learners permit to drive in a few months will make it apparent that working is something he will have to do for the next 60 years or so and he will accept the idea.

Here we go! Here we go!! Here we go!!!

We leave Tuesday for the USSSA Softball Championships at Ocean City, MD. It's going to be hot and a lot of work (I guess they can play up to 6 games in a day) but my girl is ready.

The Clearfield Lady Cyclones are looking to bring home a 1st place win or a really good tan at the very least. laugh

Wish my girls luck.

My son has been asked to act in a tourism video today for an upcoming wine festival. He's going to be the 'expert' and another couple will be the novices. Don't think it's a paying job - but he still loves acting. Hopefully he can send me a link when it's done. Funny thing - he doesn't even drink.

Re: Brag On Your Kids Thread - 07/18/18 02:26 PM

My daughter is wrapping up a teaching assignment for the summer. She taught second grade last year but this assignment was teaching a group of teenage boys with autism. She absolutely loved this job and will be working next year with this same school teaching children with special needs. I applaud her for her dedication to teaching these children, she has definitely not chosen the easy path.

She came to me a couple weeks ago with a request from the students who wanted to build a "Little Free Library" for the school. I designed and built the library so that it could be disassembled into pieces that they could put together and paint themselves. The kids sent me thank you notes and it was really quite touching.

I am very happy that my daughter is an advocate for children with special needs and is dedicated to helping them. Most of us can only imagine the courage and strength that they posses to endure the challenges that they face every day.

Re: Brag On Your Kids Thread - 07/18/18 02:47 PM

TJ - as the father of a teenage son with special needs, including being on the autism spectrum, please thank your daughter for me. It takes a special person and a special heart to teach those who struggle with special needs but it means so much to those students and to their parents to have such dedicated teachers in the students' lives.

Re: Brag On Your Kids Thread - 08/24/18 04:51 PM

So my daughter, after years of playing soccer in middle and high school, decided to walk-on to the rowing team at Clemson as a coxswain (not a rower) in her freshman year. She got up every morning for practice and was out on the water while most were still sleeping. She started a sport she had never participated in before and also managed to transition to college.

All the hard work paid off, as she was awarded a letter and lettermans jacket this week when she returned to campus for her sophomore year.

So proud of her and all the hard work she's put in.
