The first thing I learned about bankers was banker's hours...8 to 5!

"The whole point about internships is to give students a positive experience and to get to know our firm and us to know them well, so we can work out who would be the best fit to join the company full-time after they graduate."

I wonder what they consider "full time" if an intern works 36 hours straight. eek

A friend applied for a job at some brokerage firm out of college, and during his interview, the manager said they were proud that they only worked half days.

My friend thought that was great, until the guy finished his sentence, "Yep, we only work 12 hours a day."

I'd work 12 hours/day if I cared enough!

In a previous work life, I had a stretch where I worked every day for 3+ months straight, averaging over 80 hours a week as a salaried employee who was earning well below minimum wage if you looked at paycheck amount vs hours worked. But since I had no time to spend money, and even slept at work at least once a week...money wasn't all that useful. It was a little tiring, but I liked the job a heck of a lot more than this one where I walk out promptly at 5:00 nearly every day!

Wonder how many 5-hour energy type drinks he was consuming! I wouldn't be surprised if something like that was involved.

Poor Guy - but he chose to work that late. No one can force you to do that. As I also have epilepsy I can tell you from personal experience that total exhaustion will bring on a seizure. They found him dead in the shower - probably had a seizure and either hit his head or suffocated. He should have known to take care of himself better than that!

I used to work with several people that worked 10-12 hr days, came in on weekends, skipped lunch, skipped their kids plays and games, didn't use all of their vacation, etc...When the Board sold the Bank a few years ago, they got the same pink slip as the people that worked 8:30-5. It isn't worth it.

Well said. Don't let life pass you by. Learn to enjoy the little things and don't lose the ability to imagine.

5 years ago I was working myself non-stop. I saw the show firefly and was speaking about it to my friend. He told me it was cancelled 10 years ago.

At that moment I realized I had forgot to watch the world and was too immersed in my work. Since that date I have been much better, and have been much happier.

I used to work a lot - long hours. When one of the banks I worked for was purchased, the purchasing bank took all my policies and procedures that I worked nights and weekends on and threw them away as no longer relevant -I learned my lesson. YEs, there are sometimes projects you need to spend extra time on. But it is far better ot work smarter during working hours than kill yourself for any job.

Trading my time for money sucks as it is but when you work un-paid OT then the pay per hour drops and I would rather be..... well almost anything actually.

I agree with everyone's posts about life's too short, etc., and I have nothing but sympathy for this young man's family and loved ones.

That said, with all the new regs, two OCC Exams (1 Compliance and 1 CRA) plus 4 outside audits this year, I sometimes feel like I'm in my office 24/7. My guess is that they're are other COs feel the same way.
