Temperature - 11/12/13 06:21 PM

For those that have to deal with cold winters, what do you set your thermostat at and when?

For winter I'm thinking of setting mine at 68. I had it at 70 one year but wondered if that was too high. I don't vary much whether during the day or night, I tend to keep it pretty steady.

For summer I was at 73 at one point but moved to 75.

Re: Temperature - 11/12/13 06:23 PM

We have a programmable-during the week it is around 64 during the day, 66 during the evening, then back down to 64 overnight.

Weekends are 64 overnight and 66 during the day.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

I was doing 65 during the day when only the dogs were home. Hey, they're wearing coats! smile
Now between elderly mother and recuperating hubby, temps are a bit higher and it's already showing on my gas bill. frown

65 during the day, 68 when we are home.
(Unless we burn wood in the fireplace, then it's 75+)

74 during the summer with AC.

We don't have central air, and live on the second floor of an apartment building. Mid-winter it can be zero outside, and in the upper 70s in our place, without having the heat on. It's ridiculous, we often have some of the windows cracked throughout the winter. Our heat is set to kick on if it drops below 60, it almost never does smirk.

Re: Temperature - 11/12/13 08:15 PM

Woodstove, old mobile home. On a cold night, we'll try to get it pumped up to around 75 before going to bed, and it can fall to as low as 50 by morning. I love country living!
Posted By: MyBrainHurts

Re: Temperature - 11/12/13 08:21 PM

65 in the day/evening, but we'll probably kick it down to 62 soon. Then we set it for 58 when sleeping. 58 when we're not home, also. We use sweatshirts and blankets to survive and an electric blanket at night.

It dropped into the 20s last night, and we woke up to snow-covered roofs, though the ground is still too warm for anything to stick. It was quite a shock to walk out the door this morning. I'm ready for Spring.

Re: Temperature - 11/12/13 08:21 PM

Several years back we put in geothermal heating. This was after years of paying huge propane bills. Back then, it was always cold in the house. Now, I generally keep it at 72-74 when we are home, and 70 in the summer, sometimes lower. Average bills between summer and winter run around $110.00. I love it.

If it's less than 70 outside, our heat is set at 69. If it's more than 75 outside, our a/c is set at 74. Between 70-75 outside, nothing on in the house and windows are open.

Sorry. I get cold easily. smile

Re: Temperature - 11/12/13 09:20 PM

If I could find a way to prevent the wife from changing it, it would be 60 in the winter and 80 in the summer. However, it usually ends up around 68 in winter and 75 in summer.

Re: Temperature - 11/12/13 10:27 PM

If it drops below 64 inside, I'll turn it on to 66. Nothing at night, that's what blankets are for!!

I've only had my heater on twice so far this year. Oh, and I ran the A/C once last summer, on the day I was moving into the house.

Summer - 75
Winter - 70

All day and night, I don't do well cold. Ex father in law was in the HVAC industry for years and was very against having the temps adjust day and night. Said it didn't save anything and was very hard on heat and air units.
Posted By: Peepers

Re: Temperature - 11/12/13 10:46 PM

Interesting Jen, I wondered about that.

Mine only differs by one degree from day to night (heating and cooling) but I wonder if that really does anything, if it's even worth it.

The one nice thing I do have is a thermostat that switches over from heat to cool without setting a switch. That's sometimes needed in WI during the beginning of Fall/end of Spring

Re: Temperature - 12/05/13 04:38 PM

Good luck driving in that. Freezing rain and sleet are worse then snow, I will give you that
Posted By: RR Jen

Re: Temperature - 12/05/13 04:45 PM

I'm not driving...especially since I don't have 4WD any more. There are 8 of us who want to run the St Jude half marathon Saturday in Memphis. I'm at the mercy of one of the drivers. If they are brave enough to drive it, I'll go. If they say no way, I'm stuck at home.
Posted By: PATSGirl74

Re: Temperature - 12/05/13 04:45 PM

Temp outside my office window says 52 ..... that is doubtful and since it's New England it could be 35 in a matter of hours

That being said I don't envy you PP - stay bundled up
Posted By: Pale Rider

Re: Temperature - 12/05/13 04:48 PM

Hope you make it Jen, but don't put yourself in danger driving in sleet and freezing rain. Research and healthcare for the kids at St. Jude will go on without that half marathon.
Posted By: RR Jen

Re: Temperature - 12/05/13 04:50 PM

The marathon weekend raises over $8 million dollars for St Jude. A lot of that is in participant fundraising that has already been collected, but I'm certain the race weekend adds to it with 20,000+ participants coming to town.

•Lawyers have their hands in their own pockets.
•You have to break the smoke off your chimney
•You have to open the fridge to heat the house
•Your false teeth chatter, and they are still in the glass
•Police tell a robber to freeze, and he does
•Our words froze in midair and we had to put them in a frying pan to thaw them so we hear what we were talking about.
•People look forward to getting a fever
•Mailmen watch out for both dogs and polar bears
•I’m shivering like a mobster in a tax office.
•We had to chisel the dog off a lamp-post
•Refrigerators are redundant
•Pet stores sell hamsters, gerbils and penguins

Same here. There's not nearly the snowpack in the mountains this year.

I took my horse for a walk yesterday as it was too icy to ride. There is hardly any snow up in the mountains, it's going to make for a dry summer. frown

Re: Temperature - 01/06/14 02:39 PM

7 below here, 25 miles from St. Louis. And we're buried in snow. Only a few of us hardy souls who happen to live close by are here at work. The bank is not opening until 10 today, because of the weather.

My day started just before 4 AM, when my wife woke me to let me know it was 50 in the house, and the furnace wouldn't come on. We had electric, and the gas was working, so I was at a loss. Then it occurred to me that the furnace is vented through a PVC pipe in the side of the house, the same side that had a four foot snow drift. I grabbed a flashlight and snow brush and headed outside. I only got as far as the garage door, though, because a drift to high to stop over had formed. I shoveled a path and then staggered through the yard like a lost Antarctic explorer, and found the vent pipe was packed with snow. I cleaned it out, and the furnace came on.

So then I shoveled away the rest of the drift by the garage, then cleared the pile at the end of the drive that the snowplow made, and then went back to bed at 5:30 for an hour.

The governor closed schools here (Minnesota) today on Friday because of the frigid cold. According to the news if we were on the old wind chill scale (which was changed in 2001) the wind chills would be in the 70-80 below range.

Is that a heated back porch or an open one, Skittles? Unless it's heated, I'd be barring that dog door. Whether they seem to like it or not, everything I've read says you shouldn't let dogs sleep outside in single digit temps.

it was 45 when I woke up, it's currently 53 now and our highs are expected to be in the low 60's. Inasmuch as this is really cold here for us, I still sympathize with all of y'all

It's warmer in the interior of the Antarctic today (high 20s) than it is in Dallas (low 20s)!

Of course, it is their summer.

Stay warm, y'all. I feel so bad for the homeless and hope they found shelter.

Re: Temperature - 01/07/14 06:51 PM

I agree BB. I just walked back into the bank from the parking lot coming back from lunch, a 10 second walk and my hands HURT from the cold, I cannot imagine being homeless. frown

48 hours below freezing, that means the peach blossoms will set up nicely for the hill country peaches next summer....

Re: Temperature - 01/07/14 08:42 PM

Yeah, the peaches are probably happy. The citrus...maybe not so much.

30 here, feels like low 20's. Partly to mostly cloudy...can we say GROSS!
