I have been gorging on books while I have some down time.... It has been lovely.

Currently I am reading Spy School (young adult), Rose Under Fire (next book by the woman who wrote Code Name Verity, which I *loved*) and listening to Legend.

Re: What are you Reading - 2014! - 01/02/14 05:40 PM

I really like it, MonkEE. Especially for things like the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - I don't have to waste my time & mental energy figuring out how to say the town names, for example, I just listen to someone who knows how they are to be said! I also like that I can listen while I am sitting in traffic or folding clothes, etc. - it's a good way to get through those boring times.

I use Audible.com, and I think they usually have offer a bonus book or two when you subscribe as a new user.

I know some people that go to either Amazon.com or other book sites, pull up a specific category they're interested in (Fiction --> Mystery and Thriller --> Sci-Fi and Supernatural) then either pick the top rated book or browse reviews to pick one.

I'm in a mystery book-club. Since we've met long enough to know each other's likes and dislikes, we can set some bounds on the recommendations. If no one has an author or title they want to recommend, we'll pull up a list of "Edgar" winners and go from there.

I get to read a bunch of authors I might not otherwise have tried.

I don't know about other people's book clubs, but we seem to have much better discussions about books that no one liked.

Re: What are you Reading - 2014! - 01/21/14 09:17 PM

REad 2 books this weekend from authors I'd not read before:
1.The Lost City by Roger Grubbs
2.Squeaky Clean Mysteries #1 "Hazardous Duty" by Christy Barritt.

I loved the premise behind the Grubbs book - the storyline, but not the way the story was told. Very chopped up feeling no good character development...Don't think I'll be reading more of his.

However, LOVED Hazardous Duty - will be getting the rest of the Squeaky Clean Mysteries series.... She always wanted to be a forensic scientist but had to drop out of college when her mom died so she became the person who comes and cleans your house once the police are done with their investigation after a crime...

I'd much prefer that over Cosmo's recommendations......

This could be tough for me. I am really picky with books, but I know I should give other genres a chance. This will definitely push my boundries...

Re: What are you Reading - 2014! - 01/21/14 10:21 PM

In my book group we pick books by everyone recommends at least two books that they have already read and recommend, then we put them all in a hat and draw them out. Booklist is a magazine that has great books in it. All of us are avid readers of varing subjects so we get a good variety. One of the gals wanted to write down who recommended the book in case she didn't like it. (we vetoed that) The best part about book group is the opportunity to read books I would not normally pick out. The other is the discussion, I get so much more from a book disussing other peoples views of the same written word. So subjective....I Keep a separate list in my Kindle for recommended reading and put books into that throughout the year.

Re: What are you Reading - 2014! - 01/22/14 02:49 PM

Looks like we may get 2-3 more women to join, which means variety will increase. WHEW. The extra person I'd like to invite reads some of the same stuff I do, so I'll have at least one ally. wink But really, different genres will be good for me (deep breaths, deep breaths), so having 7-8 participants should keep things interesting.

The only challenge will be that we are sorta spread out (as in, multiple states and time zones)... so I'm thinking maybe a google group or closed fb page? Do any of you have long-distance book clubs?

Re: What are you Reading - 2014! - 01/22/14 03:07 PM

I've done one. We did a Yahoo group at the time, but I think a closed FB page would be a good way to go.

RE: How to choose books - Our group took turns selecting. We tried to pick books that had been out for a little while so nobody had to pay full price or have difficulties getting on the wait list at the library. We also had a rule that you could only 'skip' one book per year - seems like there's always at least one person who can't manage to read any of the books.

I read my assigned reading for the week. It's really bad. eek I went on Amazon and read a few reviews, the lower-scoring reviews were exact reiterations of my complaints about the writing and style.

Now I'm afraid to give my honest opinion since I don't want to hurt the feelings of the person who chose this book. frown

Re: What are you Reading - 2014! - 03/05/14 08:20 PM

I just finished The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen. It's a very well-written novel that you have to read carefully to piece everything together, including things mentioned in stream-of-consciousness segments that aren't explained until later. He also cleverly uses objects and symbols to tie characters to one another.

It's about a family with a lot of problems. You'll see someone or something from your own family there, but they have their personal issues turned up a bit.

It could be an uncomfortable book to read if you have aging parents, or if you have unreconciled sibling issues. Or if your family gets especially nuts at Christmas.

I am reading "The Lovely Bones" and will finish it tonight. It's really good, and I'm enjoying it. Yes, the murder was shockingly brutal, but the book is about so much more than that.

I'm also reading the Odd Thomas series by Dean Koontz. I'm on book #3, but took a break halfway through to read The Lovely Bones (when I found it for 50 cents in paperback at a thrift store - score!).

Next up is a book I received for my birthday: The Art of Racing in the Rain. Can't wait!

Just curious, what was the last book? I think I recall reading here that you gave up on it but don't remember if you said what it was.

Great book! For those who assume it's a "guy's book," I received it as a gift from a woman, but I have gifted it to three other women and they all loved it.

Current read: Man on Fire. The movie (very dark, but there is a happy dog) starred Denzel Washington and is one of my lifetime favorites. I just learned it was based on a book and am enjoying it tremendously as there are changes in both location and plot that keep me interested.

Maybe if it had been more of a surprise, but... the story is a decent one, and told from a very unique POV, but it was so overwhelmingly sad, I just couldn't separate from that heavy feeling to enjoy any of it.

Working on reading the Game of Thrones Series. Had hopes of reading the series before the Season 4 started but only made it halfway through book 2.

Next up on my list will be Stephen King's new book coming out in June.

Anybody read the J.D. Robb "In Death" series?

Loved The Art of Racing in The Rain. Yes its sad but is such a well written book and love the dog POV.

Wow, I thought it was about perseverance and inner strength in their purest forms! (The person who gave it to me thought I needed some encouragement at the time). Currently reading "Dragonfly in Amber" and "Fleur de Lies" and listening to "Birthmarked." Dragonfly is book 2 in the Outlander series, which I am re-reading prior to the new book next month; Fleur is a mystery in a cozy series I read; and Birthmarked is a dystopian. I started reading two different free books this weekend and they were both so terrible, I stopped less than 25% in and deleted from my Kindle. I hate having book hangover after reading a great series. cry

I also started Tuesday's Child by Dale Mayer. So far, so good.

I read it a couple years ago. I liked the premise, but thought the writing quality was poor - maybe about high-school level. That made it difficult for me to really get into.

Thank you, ladies! I like it so far (esp. the portrayal of the holy trinity! :D) . I'm still waiting for the A-HA moment though - according to all the mini-blurbs at the beginning, I'm expecting a life-changer. smirk

I agree that the writing is a little high schoolish - but it makes for an easy read.

Right now I am reading book 3 in the Outlander series (Voyager - almost finished with that one and will move on to book 4. Book 8 comes out tomorrow.)

I finished "Timebound", 1st book in the CHRONOS series, this weekend. Not sure if I'm going on to book 2 or not. I started the sequel to The Gollywhopper Games, my 11 yo wants me to read that along with her.

Still listening to "Birthmarked" when I have time.

I have quit reading books over an abundance of such errors. I will excuse a few (although I do notice them) but if they are numerous, I can't take it. And yes, they are more common in free / self-published works.

Re: What are you Reading - 2014! - 06/17/14 03:26 PM

My peeve is using the same word over and over again in the same paragraph. "She walked up the stairs. He followed her up the stairs. At the top of the stairs, she stopped. He paused at the top of the stairs as well." crazy

I can excuse a few mistakes here and there, even the big publishers miss some stuff. But when it's so blatant it effects the flow of the story, yeah, I get annoyed too.

The market has been flooded with self-pubbed e-books on Amazon. All it takes is a word document and you can get something live in 12-24 hours. Amazon does some low-level review, but it's just to ensure content isn't against their guidelines. A sad consequence of the ease of self-pubbing is that some (lots?) of them are not professionally edited.

bsa nerd, my favorite Stephen King is "The Stand". Don't let the sheer number of pages scare you. If you immerse yourself in books like I do, you'll find it's a quick and very pleasant read. My ex and I joked that we were going to "Stand Land" while reading and that meant short of an air raid, we didn't want to be disturbed. laugh

Christine is an excellent book to start with, much of the book is told from the car's point of view...

I also recommend Jaws by Peter Benchley...much of that is told from the shark's point of view...

Skip reading Pet Semetary if you don't want to be freaked out...also skip The Shining and It. I made the mistake of reading the expanded version of The Stand...while it was a decent read, the extra 600 pages was a tad over the top (i think it was 600, was so long ago i honestly don't recall and i'm too lazy to google it)

Oh, I totally agree, Happy. Read the book in its original non-expanded form. The extra 600 pages (which I just had to go back and re-read) was just so much self-indulgent fluff by an author who knows some of us have to read every word he writes. laugh

Most could at least get a grammar-nazi friend to beta for them, though. Heck, I did that when I was writing fan-fiction. I have given up on many, many books (and left scathing reviews) because there were so many errors that I was spending too much time editing in my head to even follow the plot.

ETA: I just finished Good Omens by Neil Gaimen and Terry Pratchett. I've only ever read short stories by those authors before, and the book did not disappoint. It's a little dated, but very similar to Christopher Moore's writing style and a fun read if you enjoy British humor.

In all fairness, there are at least a couple of major authors that skate by with sketchy or nearly non-existent editing, too. I've recently quit reading one of them after being a faithful fan for many years because, in addition to red-pen-itis, her material has gotten stale, repetitive, and just plain weird. The other one I still read even though her gratuitous use of the word "peer" drives me absolutely bonkers! (RR Sarah will know the ones of whom I speak.)

I just finished "Sea of Tranquility" a teenage romance. I finished a book while on an airplane, and had this one, for some reason, on my tablet, so I started reading it.

It started off ok, with details being cleverly revealed one by one, like peeling an onion, but then it just degenerated into a slow-moving teenage romance. The ending was both predictable and unbelievable.

He does have a distinctive writing style many people don't care for. My reading buddy can't stand him, says he's too wordy, but I'm a huge fan.

Since I'm also Jack Reacher fan, just started David Balducci's John Puller series. Only about 35% through the first book but geez....a tough military guy who beats up the local thugs, has an obsession with guns, tells time by the clock in his head, and has uncanny abilities to solve crimes. It's Reacher with a driver's license.

Re: What are you Reading - 2014! - 04/02/15 12:58 PM

I have begun reading the John Sanford Prey novels in order, something I have wanted to do for several years. I originally had probably read about half of them, but not necessarily in order. I believe there are roughly 20 of them, I am on book 5. Each title has the word Prey in it.(i.e. Rules of Prey, Night Prey, Winter Prey, etc...)

They are crime novels focused on a main character, a detective Lucas Davenport from Minneapolis and mainly take place in the Twin Cities and northern Wisconsin where he has a cabin. I lived in the Twin Cities for a while, so its fun to recognize the scenery.

I admit they are an easy read, but sometime that's what I need (or all I have time for).

I admit they are an easy read, but sometime that's what I need (or all I have time for).

I love the Prey Books! I have not read them in order either and I would love to do that! It has been awhile since I read one, so I just need to start over, refresh and get caught up!

My favorite will always be the first. However, I really liked the last Outlander book quite a bit as well - it felt like a return to the 'old' Outlander, and I liked John Grey quite a bit better in it than I did previously.

Yep, they're great! Be sure to read the Alpha & Omega spin-off books while you're at it, and then give Faith Hunter's "Jane Yellowrock" series a try. All of them feature kick-@ss female shifter lead characters.

I finished the rest of Diana Gabaldon's works last week (Lord John Grey spin-off books and novellas) and decided I needed something a little different, so I pulled out some good ol' Christopher Moore - A Dirty Job. Always good for a few laughs!

Yes, and yes. Even the full-length books are MUCH shorter than the Outlander stuff, and they are fast, light reads. I enjoyed them. Then again, I liked Lord John's character from the first moment he jumped out of the woods and tried to cut Jamie's throat at 16. He's got moxy. smile

I always have several books going at once but two I just started are "Far From the Maddening Crowd" by Thomas Hardy and begin rereading "When Money Dies" by Adam Fergusson.

The second one was sobering when I only read it to learn about the run-up to the rise of Nazism in Germany. It's more sobering now, even though 1920s Weimer Germany cannot be considered a direct comparison to the economy of the United States.

With a few substitutions though ...

Picked up the new Harper Lee book at Sam's yesterday. My eldest gran saw it come out of the shopping bag and begged me to let her read it first so she can get in on the conversations on Twitter and the internet. She cannot believe that readers are surprised by Atticus in the new book. Her arguments were persuasive enough that I feel like I should reread Mockingbird first too.

I started Harper Lee's book last night, about 18% through (Kindle reader)and hope to finish it in the next day or two. The adult Scout is as interesting of a character as she was in Mockingbird.

Having purposely ignored all internet chatter, so far I'm enjoying it. When I'm done with it I'll see what the chatter is saying.

catcher in the rye - finished but just wanted to punch the main character right in the nose
the adventures of huck finn - never finished

"All the Light We Cannot See." I read it before it hit the best sellers list and thought it was okay, but not great. Then, I had so many people tell me it was wonderful that I read it again. My opinion improved somewhat on some specific points, but I discovered that the shifts between subjects and time frames was dizzying if you did not read it in large blocks of time. I have a finer appreciation for quality of writing and plot structure, but would give it no better than a 7 or 8 out of 10 and the overall plot is less than believable.

I went to a used book sale and got a bag of books for $5. I started in by reading House of Sand and Fog, by Andre Dubus. I remember the movie getting a lot of attention and the book won several awards. It was awful. I've been picking it up and reading a couple pages then ignoring it for a couple weeks, then trying again. I finally quit yesterday. If I had to read about her running her fingers through his pubic hair one more time, I was going to set the book on fire. The book equivalent of a chick flick.

So, I started reading Michael Crichton's Timeline. I'm a few chapters in, and love it. Quantum physics, medieval history, and archeology. What more could I ask for?

Now reading "The Killer Angels" by Michael Shaara, a novel about the Battle of Gettysburg. I've been trying to decide whether or not to read that one. I love Butcher's Dresden Files series but haven't tried any of his other fantasy books. Is Aeronaut's Windlass high fantasy or steam-punk? Something about the title makes me think steam-punk, which is not usually my genre of choice.
Posted By: Dazed Auditor

Re: What are you Reading - 2014! - 12/01/15 02:11 PM

It's steam-punk. Not my favorite genre either and I knew that when I started reading it. I love the Dresden Files and Aeronaut's Windlass is such a step back for him. It's not awful so I will finish it but I won't read any other books in the Cinder Spire series.

OK, thanks. I'll at least wait until the ebook gets discounted, then. Have you read any of his Codex Alera series? I have yet to make myself pick any of those up, either. The descriptions read like video game summaries and...meh. I just can't seem to care.

The Aeronaut's Windlass was at the library so I paid nothing for it. I have not read any of the Codex Alera series for the same reason.

I enjoyed Meljean Brooks' "Iron Seas" series, and Katie MacAlister made an amusing foray into steam punk with "Steamed." I don't know if that last one really counts, per se, but it was funny.

I'm pretty sure I've read a couple of others, too, but I can't find them offhand.

Last night I started "A Man Called Ove" by Fredrik Backman. My wife finished it the other night, and was crying her eyes out reading the last few pages. It starts out with a 59 year old man who suddenly lost his job. It just so happens I'm 59 and the OCC exit is this afternoon. I hope I don't end up identifying with Ove too much.

I would not recommend Aeronaut's Windlass. It is steam punk but is slow and very long. Like around 650 pages. I'm on 300 and still waiting for something interesting to happen. Try the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson. I think that is steam punk and I really liked that series.
