Without intending to, and probably without realizing it happened, our new CEO changed the dress code here. He's just a bit more formal than his predecessor, and now all the men keep their suit coats on most the day, and always wear them to meetings. It's like a throwback to 30 years ago. But we look very spiffy.

sorry, i haven't worn a suit to work in almost 2 years, and i'd need to dust one off if i were to do so...and i'd certainly never wear my coat all day...says the guy currently in blue jeans and a polo shirt...

"Chicken and waffles" is a southern delicacy, the waffles are not rolled. Unless you get them from a food truck, like Wafalogy, then they are rolled, but they did not start out like this. Check out Wafalogy on twitter or Facebook.

Yes, thin breakfast waffles. I normally move my chicken to a smaller plate, cover in hot sauce then eat along with mac & cheese (if I get that there) and greens [it eaten there, then sprinkled with chile vinegar] then move on the the waffle. Not sure if that's the official way to eat them, but that's how I roll.

It would appear that depending on what model it is, they have some platinum components to them. That would make sense that they'd get them back to scrap to salvage operations, like catalytic converters and some other parts that contain precious metals.

Without getting too technical (and inappropriate), the female has a "gynosome" that acts like the traditional male reproductive organ. When mating the female inserts the gynosome into the male's body and retrieves sperm from the male and brings it back inside the female's body.

Re: Monday Random Thoughts - 05/19/14 03:11 PM

A woman in New Jersey is fighting to have her car repaired after she filled up her tank with what turned out to be tainted gasoline.

Adrienne Roetman topped off her nearly empty tank at a gas station in Midland Park, New Jersey. After doing so, her 2013 Mazda3 stopped dead, just a short distance from the station, CBS New York reported. She had the car towed to a dealership where mechanics discovered her fuel tank was filled with mostly water.

I do not see where an attendant is mentioned unless the process of filling you tank is so ingrained in NJ as asking someone else to fill it is the equivalent of filling it yourself. shocked

At least 11 people are sick in four unnamed states with E. coli O157:H7 infections, FSIS officials said. That’s a potentially dangerous germ that can cause severe food poisoning, and, in some cases, a deadly complication called hemolytic uremic syndrome, or HUS. Children and the elderly are especially vulnerable, health officials say.

Wolverine meat products were shipped to distributors for restaurant use in Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio. The ground beef was not used in federal Department of Defense programs, the National School Lunch Program or in catalog or internet sales, officials said.

Why the heck can't you pump your own gas here?

Advocates of repeal have argued it could save anywhere from 5 to 7 cents per gallon, but defenders of full-service counter that would come at the cost of tens of thousands of jobs — not to mention the emotional toll taken as grown, functioning adults across the state struggle to learn a skill most motorists master by age 17.

They sure can appear ferocious! True story: I worked at a pet store during college. One afternoon a customer walked in, plopped a live trap containing a snarling gray lump of fur on the counter, and asked me (very sincerely) if it was "some kind of Tazmanian devil or something that got loose, 'cuz I know y'all sell that kinda stuff here." crazy Um...no.

We didn't have a woodchuck, but a small raccoon instead. Climbed the garage wall, got up in the soffit. I chased it around in there a bit, but eventually dropped a live trap, shut the door and left him alone. He never went in the trap, but when I checked the situation out this morning, he was hanging out in the garage corner and I herded him out and down the driveway. It wasn't exactly fun, but for a while I thought we might have a new pet!

I remember, back in the day, when we used to order ground chuck from the Sears, Roebuck catalog. I always wished the USPS truck was refrigerated, and that we weren't the last stop on the route. But if you cooked it long enough, the green and blue parts turned gray, just like the rest of it.

It reminds me of the other day when we caught a possum in a trap instead of a cat here at work...that was one mad possum...it was scary freeing him from the trap...and holding our breath that he went in the opposite direction instead of taking his frustrations out on us. eek

No, it was me on a ladder going back and forth from one end of the garage to the other with a pair of sticks, trying to herd him to a corner so I could trap him in it and force him out of the soffit area. That didn't happen. He was too small and too quick! Never once hissed at me or anything though, was just scared. If I'd had good enough gloves, I bet I could've drug him out of there, but my wife said if I got rabies she was going to put me down frown

Why would anyone want a skunk Or porcupine puppy in the first place laugh

BB1 can verify that lots of folks like having skunks as pets. They have the glands that release the stinky stuff removed by a vet.

Re: Monday Random Thoughts - 06/02/14 08:22 PM

The internet is weird. I was reading an article linked to in one of our other threads, and at the bottom was a group of links to other articles. The one that caught my eye was,

"St. Louis Missouri's Best Beaches and Lakes."

Now, if you've visited St. Louis, you know there's no beach. The waterfront is paved with cobblestones. In high water, they disappear. When the river's low, you'll get run over if you try to sunbathe, because people park there. It's just as well there's no beach, because if someone decided to go swimming, they'd be fished out of the river in Vicksburg, MS, if the giant catfish didn't get them first.

So, I had to click the link. They gave a map that pointed to two parks. The first, in the middle of town, has no beach or lake, but it does have a pool. It also has the River Des Peres (duh pear) flowing though it, but as anyone knows, that's just a ditch for rainwater runoff. No beach.

The other park is way out in the sticks, and is all woods. No lake no beach.

The article was sponsored by AARP, so maybe the writers have dementia.

A barking dog wouldn't fit into the soffit area either! He's already too big to get in there. A small army of dagger-toothed puppies would be more effective. Go my minions, nip and tear anything that gets in your way! Muah. Muahaha. Muahahahahahahaha!

We're having yet another food day for a co-worker birthday in my department so I opted for something healthier. I bought cherry tomatoes, mozzarella pearls (little marble sized bites) and some Italian seasoning. I mixed the seasoning with a touch of garlic powder and rolled the mini cheese balls in the mixture. I cut the tomatoes in half and layered on a toothpick: top half of tomato, cheese ball, bottom half of tomato. They are so cute and refreshing too!

Keeping with the pattern of MM/DD/YY, if you subtract the 1 from the 4 of this year, and multiply it by this month, you get today's date:

I never knew that!! The kids start on the 13th here.
They used to wait until after the state fair, but not this year.
I think our early start has to do with IHSA football rules.

School would be scheduled to get out May 20th. With 5 snow-days scheduled, which would mean May 28 will more than likely be the last day of school. Rural busing district, we don't use as many snow days as the surrounding schools, but typically use 2. Last year we used all 5 laugh

We switched to this type of calendar (known as a balanced calendar here) last year. I'm not really sure yet if I am a fan. We start back on August 4th, and will go until June 3rd. In theory, we get two weeks in October for Fall Break, two weeks at Christmas, two weeks in late March/early April for Spring Break, plus a few holidays. Then summer should be about 8 weeks. However, with all the snow days we had to make up, this summer has been closer to 6 weeks.

We did really enjoy the extra time at Fall Break (we used to get only 2 days, so this opened up a lot of travel options for us). I didn't think I would mind the shortened summer, but I actually do mind it a little bit. It seems like we are just now getting to the point of being able to relax a bit. . .and school starts again next week.

I guess no system is perfect!
Posted By: HappyGilmore

Re: Monday Random Thoughts - 07/28/14 07:01 PM

hmmm...

we get 1 week at Thanksgiving
2 weeks at Christmas
1 week at Mardi Gras
1 week (actually 1 week and 2 days) at Easter
Fair Day
Teacher in service days (4)
MLK
Summer is 11 weeks

We exapanded our school day a couple of years back by about 10 minutes per day, which allowed us to move up school ending by about 1 1/2 weeks...

It was really weird--all we can think of is that Cyrus (the dog) had never seen the pool water, and with the deck he now could. My poor son had his good leather shoes on and his wallet and insulin pump. Shoes are still drying, wallet is good to go, and pump is waterproof!

Well, my son, my hubby and I were all on the deck, it just happened so fast, and my son just flew out of his chair. To be honest, I don't think I have ever seen him move so fast!! I am surprised we didn't all end up in there. Solar cover was fine too. At first my son was embarrassed about it, but then realized good old Cyrus might not be around if he hadn't. Re: Monday Random Thoughts - 08/11/14 01:29 PM

so I finally went to the local McDonald's that has the dual lanes

I thought the split for the two lanes was much farther back but I was mistaken

there is one lane (yellow lines to both sides) up until about six feet in front of the fork that leads two ways to two different ordering spots

the yellow lines expand so as to encompass the lane if you go sraight and the one if you veer to the right a bit

so, someone would have to drive outside the main lane to go around someone on the right as the other person is waiting by the fork

I've actually done that but probably shouldn't have

city park does have a covered carousel, with many 100+ year old carved horses...storyland is where it is located...right across from the new miniature golf...and a mini-train on a 2-mile loop through the park...Audobon insectarium is what TR is referencing...and the Aquarium also has a new reef exhibit...and a bird exhibit...stay away from the zoo, too hot for most of the animals and they will be seeking shade...haven't had a 3-year old in a long time, not sure what you could do to entertain them in the city...

In my wife's family (6 kids), the boys went to college, but her older sisters did not. My wife and her parents (everyone else was gone) moved to a new apartment right before her senior year. The landlord said he thought the apt. might be too small for three adults. My FIL said, That's ok, she'll only be here for a year. That's when my wife decided she better start thinking about college. At least she'd have a place to live.

Oh I could so use a bubble bath right now with some Mozart playing in the background. We are rolling out electronic Board packets tomorrow through an app or browser version and each director is supposed to bring their own device (iPad, tablet, laptop, etc). 80% of the directors have never used such a device and have just purchased it within the last two weeks. I might have to start a bar in here tomorrow night after the all day meeting. I'm praying the bank's Wi-Fi can handle it. crazy

i think the more important question is why do you allow this lady into your carport?
Posted By: MyBrainHurts

Re: Monday Random Thoughts - 08/25/14 09:04 PM

Oh, Sci, I feel for you. That wasn't well thought out. We went to electronic board packets too, but the bank purchased identical devices for everyone, and installed the necessary security software and setting password rules before distributing them. Then they were all trained at once on IT security, how to use the device and how to access the reports.

In the long run, it's worth it though. As I saw this morning how our humidity had curled the paper in the copier I was reminded of the first law of board preparation: The likelihood of copier failure increases in direct proportion to the proximity of the board meeting.
Posted By: Dawg

Re: Monday Random Thoughts - 08/25/14 09:57 PM

I'm pre-med or pre-something and my advice to you is alcohol and drugs. We did the same thing 14 months ago, but gave them all the same device with everything pre-installed and ready to go (or so we thought). I spent the first 45 mintues of each board meeting for the next 6 months logging them in, resetting their passwords, finding a charger to charge the iPad (drove our chairman nuts). Slowly, one by one they stopped bringing the iPads and we ended up putting the presentation on a 80 inch screen in the board room. The liked that a lot better. Good Luck

All we have to do is fly to Nepal and become citizens!

It surely cant be THAT hard.

Well, let's see.. At 10,000 ft, about one in a hundred get light headed. At 14000 ft, about 1 person in 20 will pass out. Half the people that attempt, Everst have to drop out due to altitude sickness and at 20,000 ft, your body starts to cannibalize itself for energy.
Should be a breeze!! laugh

Been there done that. I didn't feel light headed, but I did have a slight headache.

Re: Monday Random Thoughts - 09/29/14 05:38 PM

I've done several 14'ers and only had a bit of a headache once. I've never entered the "Death Zone" of 20,000. As I understand it, one of the tough things about climbing Everest or K2 (besides the $Gazillion in equipment and travel) is that you have to acclimate for a pretty good period of time in order to be able to handle the $20,000+ Altittude. I think it woul make a he11 of a bucket list item though!

A 1994 policy? I hope it's something that hasn't changed much over the years, like maybe RESPA.

Pale, those pictures from Mt Everest are creepy. I've been trying to chose one last item for my bucket list, either drink wine on a Southern France beach or climb Everest. Wine it is.

Re: Monday Random Thoughts - 09/30/14 07:21 PM

K2 i think is a more difficult climb but Annapurna is arguably the most danger climb. Fewer people have attempted it but 1 in 3 climbers that have tried it have died.
Also the North Face of the Eiger is a pretty wicked climb.
I know none of these first hand. But by reputaion, they are all incredible challenges to the body, mind and spirit.

It seriously depends on the spices and the batter.
We tried them at the state fair and one of them was beyond blah.
But the other one wasnt bad. More spice in the meat and the batter was liek a really good pancake batter.
But even the "good one" was more of a novelty, not something i would go out and order at a restaurant.

A bit different. It has the meat, onions, cheese, mustard, ketchup and the buns. They whole thing is toothpicked and dipped in batter and then deep fried.
