Wasn't aware of this loss until today. George Martin, the producer of the Beatles. A case of being given lemons and making lemonade if there ever was one. I still love spinning their albums but the best of the Beatles probably should be attributed to Martin.

I don't know if you all realize how tiny Prince was. Friends and I visited his club Glam Slam in Minneapolis a few times in the late 80s/early 90s. One night he walked by me on his way to the DJ booth. Without heels I'm 5'8". My shoes that night probably were 2 inches so I say I was standing about 5'10". The top of Prince's head came up to my shoulder. And he always wore high heels.

I think Morley, Andy and Charles enjoyed their 'jobs' and didn't feel the need or desire to retire. When you're doing something you love to do as much as each of these men were blessed to do, retiring is not something that brings joy but rather ends what means the most to you in your life.

Tom Hayden

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/ct-tom-hayden-dead-chicago-seven-20161024-story.htm

I grew up in Chicago and turned 12 in 1968, the year the city was torn first by the MLK riots and then the anti-war riots during the Democratic convention. That fall I had a social studies teacher who was the quintessential hippie chick, and who was vehemently against the war, and who was ironically dating a Chicago cop.

Not long after we had the ridiculous show trial of Tom Hayden and the Chicago Seven. I've been a political news junkie ever since that year.

David Niven
Roger Moore
Tomothy Dalton
Pierce Brosnan
Daniel Craig

I don't know those two between Sean and Roger...but If Sean was the original and Moore started with #7...they must have been very short-lived?

to me the ONLY Bond's would be Sean and Roger. Brosnan would run a close 3rd.

Re: He Dead. - 05/23/17 04:02 PM

George Lazenby was getting a haircut when the producer met him and offered him the spot and yes that was only one time.

David Niven was oonly in casino royale ( a james bond spoof type that was funny as peter sellers was in it as well)

George Lazenby was in only 1 movie - the one where Bond got married - On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

I remember that day clearly. A local station was going to show the original MASH movie during the afternoon movie slot. The power went out 10 minutes after the movie started and it didn't comeback on until 5 minutes before the MASH finale. A couple of years later we were visiting the Smithsonian and it had a whole area dedicated to MASH.

http://www.lyricsfreak.com/j/johnny+mandel/suicide+is+painless_20801409.html

Through early morning fog I see
Visions of the things to be
The pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see

That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

I try to find a way to make
All our little joys relate
Without that ever-present hate
But now I know that it's too late, and

That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

The game of life is hard to play
I'm gonna lose it anyway
The losing card I'll someday lay
So this is all I have to say

That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

The only way to win is cheat
And lay it down before I'm beat
And to another give my seat
For that's the only painless feat

That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

The sword of time will pierce our skins
It doesn't hurt when it begins
But as it works its way on in
The pain grows stronger watch it grin, but

That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

A brave man once requested me
To answer questions that are key
Is it to be or not to be
And I replied 'Oh, why ask me? '

That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

'Cause suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

Re: He Dead. - 03/14/18 03:40 PM

The Theory of Everything did a lot to bring Hawking's life in front of millenials and the public at large. He was an amazing man who accomplished so much, most of it after his ALS diagnosis.

I didn't know this tho: "At the release party for the home video version of the A Brief History of Time, Leonard Nimoy, who had played Spock on Star Trek, learned that Hawking was interested in appearing on the show. Nimoy made the necessary contact, and Hawking played a holographic simulation of himself in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1993. The same year, his synthesiser voice was recorded for the Pink Floyd song "Keep Talking"."

Nor did I know he had his voice copywrited and "due to the American accent on his voice synthesizer, many people have no idea that he was really British. He has said he would like to replace it with a synthesizer with a British accent, but he had become so synonymous with his that he knew he couldn't."

Lots of interesting quotes from him here. I especially like the one about computer virus.

John McCain, while you may not agree with his politics, he certainly served our country for many years (many people are not aware that his wife runs a major beer distributor and is a millionaire times over and he didn't need to be in public office, he wanted to be in public office).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Prine

Health problems
In early 1998, Prine was diagnosed with squamous cell cancer on the right side of his neck. He had major surgery to remove a substantial amount of diseased tissue, followed by six weeks of radiation therapy.[36] The surgery removed a piece of his neck and severed a few nerves in his tongue, while the radiation damaged some salivary glands. A year of recuperation and speech therapy was necessary before he could perform again.[37] The operation altered his vocals, and added a gravelly tone to his voice.[38]

In 2013, Prine underwent surgery to remove cancer in his left lung. After the surgery, a physical therapist put him through an unusual workout to build stamina: Prine was required to run up and down his house stairs, grab his guitar while still out of breath and sing two songs. Six months later, he was touring again.[37]

His parents divorced when he was 4 and his mother often worked two jobs, as a secretary and painter, to support her son and herself. Eventually, she created a typewriter correction fluid called Liquid Paper and sold it to Gillette for $49 million in 1979. Nesmith inherited the fortune a year later, according to Rolling Stone.

Re: He Dead. - 12/15/21 01:43 PM

Broncos and Lions did a class move in their game in Denver this past Sunday to honor Demaryius. In the Bronco's first offensive series, they lined up with only 10 players on offense with the receiver position left vacant until the play clock ran out and the refs had to call a delay of game penalty. Then the Lions declined the penalty. So that was pretty cool. Watch it here: https://twitter.com/overtime/status/1470139676682039301

Hard to agree with any list of "greatest guitarists" that excludes Jimmie Vaughan.
Posted By: rainman

Re: He Dead. - 01/16/23 06:48 PM

Those lists are always crazy and lots of apples/oranges comparisons (how do you compare The Edge, John McLaughlin, and Joni Mitchell with each other??). With that said, it's hard to understand how Alex Lifeson winds up at 98 on this list, behind Bruce Springsteen, Joni Mitchell, and a whole 72 places behind Brian May (not to take anything away from Brian May, but is he really that much better than Alex?). And Steve Howe doesn't make the list at all?

Re: He Dead. - 08/29/23 01:35 PM

TR, I love the story of Rainbow Bridge

Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Happy, great story. I was the CRA officer for a holding company that had a bank in the Keys. Key West was unique bacause it could have a $2M house sitting next to a $100K house and neither would look out of place.

Jimmy B was instrumental in Florida's "Save the Manatee" license plate. The plate was introduced at a televised news conference with the governor giving a personalized plate with "Buffet" on it to Jimmy. After the ceremony, a hot mike picked Jimmy Buffett up saying - with a smirk, "Governor, do you want me to advertise food? My name has two T's!"

Jimmy Buffett ( with the Neville Brothers opening) at Starwood Amphitheatre in Tennessee is on my list of top concerts I've ever attended. His music was the soundtrack of my summers on the lake growing up.

For the curious, other top concerts included the Grateful Dead at Berkeley, Oingo Boingo's farewell tour, The Talking Heads (both at Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin and at the fabulous Fox Theatre in Atlanta), and The Clash (Fox Theatre, Atlanta), and The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Los Lobos, and Stevie Ray Vaughan (Auditorium Shores in Austin) .

Most all of you out there will remember him as "Ducky" Mallard on NCIS, but to me he will forever be my first pre-teen crush, Illya Kuryakin on the Man From UNCLE (all non-boomers will have to look it up).

Actually, Russ Francis died in a plane crash in a Cessna 177 that he was flying and his passenger was Richard McSpadden, former commander of the USAF Thunderbirds and most recent head of aviation safety programs at the Aircraft Owners & Pilots Assocation (AOPA). Francis was one of my very first favorite Patriot players and McSpadden was well known in the pilot community as a strong advocate for aviation safety. I always enjoyed his writings and podcasts. I was especially saddened at this loss of both of these men.

Holy Moly! If ever there were two "safe" pilots to fly with, these would be them! Does anyone know what happened? Very sad indeed.

Craziest headline i saw on social media over the weekend was speculating that Dan Lanning of Oregon might be the guy who replaces him. Why would he leave a successful program at Oregon for that dumpster fire?
Posted By: rainman

Re: He Dead. - 11/13/23 05:57 PM

You are right - that is a crazy headline. Although the opportunity to be paid many millions of dollars NOT to work could be attractive to some. I think the only reason he'd move is if one of the true elites (not A&M) offered him a pot of gold, or if his family is just not comfortable in a climate that is as far from the South as you can get. (And I mean climate in every sense it can be taken.)

i can think of 73 million reasons i'd be willing to relocate for a new job...

Lanning currently has a 6 year contract of $29.1 million...an extra $44,000,000 could go a long way to a comfortable retirement

Re: He Dead. - 11/13/23 06:53 PM

I agree with rainman...Lanning would leave for a true SEC elite program, which a&m pretends to be, but isn't.

Lanning says he's not going anywhere. That doesn't mean he won't use the TA&M situation to negotiate a raise though. I'm not going anywhere
