The Exorcist. Far more scary than the movie, but I couldn't put it down. I read it when I was about 16- if my Mom ever knew, she would've killed me. She had it on her bookshelf in the basement and it kept calling my name....

"Salem's Lot" was genuinely scary.

"It" was scary only in the sense that I was afraid I wouldn't finish it

Only the Bible. And then only because I was initially so very young and the person teaching me made it seem very frightening. (The old scare them into submission thing.)

I have not read a book that scared me. I have read some about serial killers that was pretty gross, but not scary.

I went on a summer of terror one time and read about ten King books, The Shining was the scariest, then Cujo, and Salem's Lot.

Re: Books that have scared you to death - 08/18/05 08:46 PM

I thought Cujo was scary. It was enough Stephen King for me.

My sister, an avid Stephen King reader, said the Pet Cemetary took her 3 tries to get through because it was so scary.

Dont have much time to read, but when I did, Stephen King's Pet Semetary! Spooky.

1984, to me that is a terrifying consept, being "broken" It's not actually the idea of torture that is scary to me, it's the idea of being broken, the way he was with the mice.

Re: Books that have scared you to death - 08/18/05 08:53 PM

It was a James Patterson book with the character Alex Cross. I don't remember the name of it but the first chapter or two dealt with a bank robbery...

I looked it up, the book was Roses are Red...

Oh yeah, I read Helter Skelter when I was in 6th or 7th grade and thought for sure that Charles Manson was going to get out of prison and come right for me!!

Interesting. The Bible is not a book that scared me to death. Instead, it scared me to life.

The Shining was very good. A Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule scared the cr!@ out of me the first time I read it (first time living alone/same profile as the victims-slept with a light on for days).

Re: Books that have scared you to death - 08/19/05 12:31 PM

I found "The Stand" really scary, too. Not so much while I was actually reading it, but ever since, I have moments when I suddenly think what it would be like, post-world-changing event.

Salem's Lot was also very scary, in the more traditional "I don't want to turn the light off and go to bed" way.

Good call on Salem's Lot. That was a freaky book.

Everything's Eventual was good too. It's a book of all short stories by Stephen King.

Re: Books that have scared you to death - 08/19/05 12:47 PM

I have read every book Stephen King has ever written and none of them actually scared me, but my favorite "The Stand" creeped me out because it was very possible.

You might also try Dean Koontz, he's pretty creepy. Start with "Intensity."

I've read a lot by Stephen King, but definitely not all of them! Maybe someday...

I LOVE Dean Koontz. My favorite by him was The "Watchers". "Intensity" was really good too, as was "False Memory" and "The Face".

I've also been reading John Saul. I just finished "Creature".

The one by Robin Cook- where people contract that E-cola virus- I read it a long time ago - am I thinking right on this? Shoved it off on my mom and told her she just had to read it - it was scary.

Did you read the Koontz book about the people who had the repressed memories and they get together in the motel to see what it was about? I can't remember the name, but I loved that book.

I also read everything Michael Connelly and Jonathan Kellerman write. Not scary, but good crime thrillers.

Dang - 25 years later and I still get goosebumps. I recommend the book and the movie right after. I doesn't get any scarier than Jack in this movie!

When I was 8 my older sister read to me "The Boogeyman", a short story by Stephen King. I beleive it is in "Night Shift". That story will still creep the crap out of me, and make me close my closet doors before I go to sleep.

Jaws, the book was way more better than the movie. And like Jennyfromthebloc said the Exorcist also. Was told from the perspective of the detective (hey that rhymes). Way more scarry. -- PW

Communion. It was a story about alien abduction and it was so real and well written, I was sleeping with the lights on!

Re: Books that have scared you to death - 08/19/05 03:40 PM

'Salem's Lot scared me to death. That along with Harvest Home (Tom Tryon) made me afraid to go to New England or any farming areas! (I eventually got over that. )

When I read the Exorcist I slept at my parent's house for a few nights!

Now I just don't read scary stuff. I do read mysteries (love the Kellermans) but try to stay away from anything that will disturb my sleep!

Phantoms by Dean Koontz. He's a great writer.

Anything that is a "true crime" (like Ann Rule) scares me and anything by Dean Koontz is scary.

I try not to read anything scary anymore. I can't sleep when I do!

I want to say the name of the Dean Koontz one in the motel is "Strangers" but I'm not sure.

Didn't read the book but did see the interview of old Charlie with Geraldo several years ago and found that a bit creepy.

Books don't scare me. Now movies....I have to be careful what I watch. I live in a creaky old house, and more than once my dogs have laughed at me as I leap onto the bed so something won't reach out and grab me!

I used to like Dean Koontz. But I discovered after a few of them that if you just switched the villain, the sappy love story and the sexual predator sub-plot, that they were all pretty much interchangeable stories.

In Cold Blood, by Truman Capote. Didn't really scare me but it sure as heck "haunted" me.

Anne Rice books are pretty good. I liked "Interview with the Vampire."
