Monday quiz! - 09/26/05 11:47 AM
The average person only gets 7 right. This is based on U.S. & CDN info,
so use all of the lobes of your brain. This can be more difficult than
it looks - it just shows how little most of us really see! There are 27
questions about things we see every day or have known about all our
lives. How many can you get right? These little simple questions are
harder than you think-- it just shows you how little we pay attention to
the common place things of life.
Put your thinking caps on. No cheating! No looking around! No getting
out of your chair! No using anything on or in your desk or computer! Can
you beat 20?? (The average is 7) Write down your answers and then check
your answers (on the bottom) only AFTER completing all the questions.
REMEMBER - NO CHEATING!!! --- BE HONEST!!!
That means no looking at your phone or anything on your desk...Then,
before you pass this on to your friends, change the number on the
subject line to show how many you got correct. Forward to your friends
and also back to the one who sent it to you. LET'S JUST SEE HOW
OBSERVANT YOU REALLY ARE.

I thought some of the question might be trick ones. Especially since it was "how many states are in the USA"
I was looking at in being the subjective word in trickery. I thought...well...is it 48 since Alaska and Hawaii aren't "IN" the USA. But then I thought...hmm...screw it. I'm going with 50.

It's "Missourah," actually, if you are going to write it out. This is always an issue for the politicians - they have to remember if they're in the parts of the state that say "Missouree" or "Missourah".
I got eighteen, but I think that the answer to #9 varies based on whether you have a digital or analog tuner. (Doesn't it?)
Of course, I missed everything about Canadian "money".
Interestingly (at least to me), I missed every single question regarding clockwise v. counter-clockwise. Discuss amongst yourselves.
"I got eighteen, but I think that the answer to #9 varies based on whether you have a digital or analog tuner. (Doesn't it?)"
I gave myself credit for answering 88.1 on the digital tuner. Feel free to give yourself a bonus point (for 19) if you answered this way.

Good point. There is an 87.7 as well. I will take a half point off my score. However, since I already took a point well-deserved off my score out of good sportmanship, I hearby award myself back another half a point which leaves my total score at 22.

Re: Monday quiz! - 09/26/05 08:27 PM
I think anyone who answered counterclockwise on the drain question was the more correct, since that is the direction of hurricanes in this hemisphere. Add that to a point for 87 on the FM dial, and I'm at 20. I looked, in vain, for a fan in our office that rotates counterclockwise. I'll be honest and say that I was thinking of it from the direction when you look at it. I was also not thinking of a ceiling fan.
I'm not convinced on your drain answer. I revoke your point you awarded and put you down to 19 again.

On the water draining; the picture in the article shows the water swirling clockwise....While I agree that the direction of the water filling the sink would influence the direction in which it swirls while draining, that's only true for faucets that can be placed to one side or the other of the drain, bathroom faucets are usually fixed above the drain.

According to the answer key I got 20, but I turned on my fan after the quiz and it turns counter-clockwise (if you're looking at the front). I gave myself credit for the lug-nut question because I've had cars with 4, 5, and 6.
So in reality, I got 22. No, really.

So? The point is that the Coriolis Effect would be to cause the water to drain counter-clockwise in the northern hemsiphere. Think about it - the earth's rotation is faster where - at the artic circle or the equator? Therefore, in the northern hemisphere, there would be greater (west to east) force exerted on the top or the bottom? And which direction would that cause something to spin in this hemisphere?
Quote:

The location of the faucet is hardly the only factor in providing momentum to a sink full of water.
Sigh...Let's review, shall we?
The quiz question was "Which way does water swirl down the drain; counter or clockwise?" The answer was "clockwise, north of the equator."
You suggested the answer was not accurate, not, apparently based on filling a sink with water, waiting for it to grow still, then opening the drain, but by a complex argument involving hurricanes.
Have you filled a sink and watched it swirl counterclockwise down the drain, unaided, in the northern hemisphere?

Ok, there are two issues here. First, if there was an observable coriolis effect in a sink, it would be counter-clockwise, north of the equator. This is a fact. Indisputable. The force that could act on water in a very controlled, very large sink would be the same force that acts on low pressure weather systems, and the water would drain counter-clockwise. Second, the force is simply not enough to have an effect on any sink that you or I are going to fill in order to test this.

As I have pointed out, there is no reason to do so. It would yield results that are undoubtedly the result of anything other than the coriolis effect, especially if it drains clockwise in this hemisphere!

I remember him calling someone in Australia to find out which way their toilets drained and getting in trouble for the charges. I don't remember the embassy toilets, though.
I'm not questioning my worth. AML-Barbarian may be questioning my worth, however.
Jokerman,
I'm not suggesting at all that you're an imbecile. The 'sigh' is more a reflection of me not understanding what you're working so hard to express. The quiz question was just about which way water swirls when it drains down a sink. Just that. It was not a question about the coriolis effect.
So, water draining clockwise in the northern hemisphere isn't the result of the coriolis effect. Peachy. What's the rest of your point for challenging the validity of the answer 'water drains clockwise in the northern hemisphere'?
(Since you *did* write "on the question about water draining, I'm not convinced this answer is accurate.") Have at it, does water drain counterclockwise somewhere in the northern hemisphere?

Re: Monday quiz! - 09/27/05 09:25 PM
Does it really matter which way the water drains? For all the sink plugs I have pulled in my life I don't recall caring enough to stand there and watch which way the water drains. I'd rather make sure the towel I am drying my hands with is clean! Priorities!

The quiz question was just about which way water swirls when it drains down a sink. Just that. It was not a question about the coriolis effect.
If water swirled uniformly one way or another when draining from a sink in a particular hemisphere, it would be due to the coriolis effect. There is no other reason why it would act uniformly.
Quote:

(Since you *did* write "on the question about water draining, I'm not convinced this answer is accurate.") Have at it, does water drain counterclockwise somewhere in the northern hemisphere?
I'm sure that it drains counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere quite often. I'm also sure that it drains clockwise in the northern hemisphere quite often.
Here's my progression on the issue: Being asked the question in the quiz, I thought about it, and guessed counter-clockwise, based on the direction of hurricanes. (I had heard of the coriolis effect, but couldn't have told you the name.) After I read the answers and was told I was wrong, I didn't think much about it, but later decided to do some research. I found a few good articles, and learned that my hunch about direction was correct, but that it didn't apply to small things like sinks and toilets.
That's my thinking. Why do you think that my conclusion is inaccurate?
The short answer is: experience with sinks.
The somewhat longer answer is:
Having actually used sinks in various parts of the northern hemisphere, I can't recall any that drained counterclockwise. My experience with sinks in the southern hemishpere is more limited, but I enjoyed the novelty of watching the water swirl counterclockwise.
Jokerman: To be honest, since you put this in my head I have made it a point to observe every object that contained water which I later caused to drain and 100% of the objects had water draining clockwise.

Nothing unscientific? Please. Independently reproduced direct observations? Sure. But are they scientific? Doubtful.
What is your sample size? How did you measure the basin for any irregularities? How did you remove the drain? How long did you wait to allow momentum to cease? (Better have been at least 24 hours.)

I'm not trying to go anywhere. My avatar challenge, however, continues to go unmet. Also, you are not an arbiter of my score.
But the fact remains, if drains rotate in any uniform direction in the northern hemisphere, it would be counterclockwise; they don't, except under very controlled conditions, because the effect is so small. No physicist can say otherwise.
Also, I have now read several articles on the subject, and am even more confident of this; you cannot discount this as an article which I supposedly misinterpreted. (What do you think I possibly misinterpreted from that article?)
