The Food Network - 09/14/06 05:15 PM

My husband and I have become addicted to the Food Network over the last several months. We're cooking a lot more often because of it, and it's great. We love Good Eats, Everyday Italian, 30 minute Meals, & Iron Chef. Anyone else out there enjoy the Food Network?

Re: The Food Network - 09/14/06 05:21 PM

I love the Food Network, and I also believe that Bengals Fan is in love with Rachael Ray..

We watch the Alton Brown shows, Iron Chef and the cookoffs.

Re: The Food Network - 09/14/06 05:21 PM

I don't watch it too often, but I do like 30 Minute Meals (don't know how she does it) and the Iron Chef. My son and I used to watch the old Iron Chef together a few years ago. Great shows and Alton Brown is wonderful (Good Eats).

Re: The Food Network - 09/14/06 05:18 PM

I used to watch Rachel Ray, Iron Chef America and Barefoot Contessa, but my old man can't stand it (makes him hungry) so I don't watch them that often anymore.

Re: The Food Network - 09/14/06 05:19 PM

Unwrapped is a very interesting show. And who could not like watching Emeril! Paula Deen is another great one and her sons now have a show on where they travel and try different things. It's really a good show. They have personality just like their mom!

Re: The Food Network - 09/14/06 05:20 PM

Hopeless addict here. 30 Minute Meals, Paula Deen, Iron Chef, and Good Eats are my favorites...but I'll typically watch almost anything on there. The exceptions are Barefoot Contessa and Everyday Italian - those women are smug enough to rank right up there with Martha Stewart. Blech!!
Posted By: Retired DQ

Re: The Food Network - 09/14/06 05:28 PM

Ooooh, I like unwrapped.

The Barefoot Contessa is just annoying, and the Everyday Italian babe is like a big head on a stick. I do think Rachael Ray is a real cutie! She'd probably be fun to hang out with.
Posted By: Sing A Little

Re: The Food Network - 09/14/06 05:24 PM

I forgot about Unwrapped, we like that one too. My husband thinks that Alton Brown is great, so we watch everything that he does. I don't really care for Barefoot Contessa, but we do enjoy Everyday Italian. We have just started watching Emeril, so far we've enjoyed it. I love watching the competitions, the sugar sculpture and the birthday cake suprise competitions were great!

I am a big fan too, Good Eats is my favorite it reminds me of Mr. Wizard.

Best channel on TV!

I LOVE Rachel Ray's 30 Minute Meals! SOOOOO yummy, sooooo easy!

I am sorry, but I cannot stand Rachel Ray. She needs to calm down and needs to give an honest opinion on the food she eats. According to her there is no such thing as bad food, and you can tell by her thighs.

That is too funny!!! I got home last night and my daughter had on Rachel Ray. I had never watched the show. The recipe was interesting and I have been thinking of trying it. But I thought her thighs looked quite thick!!! I was thinking it was her pants but maybe not!!

Re: The Food Network - 09/14/06 05:54 PM

Wow, you're a tough crowd. I think that Rachel Ray looks pretty good for someone who cooks and eats all day. Look at Emeril and his pot belly, I don't see people giving him slack.

Re: The Food Network - 09/14/06 05:54 PM

Both of my brothers LOVE perky little Rachel. LOL!

Funny thing is...I hate to cook...but I LOVE watching the Food Network and I'm addicted to it. I'm fascinated by each individual chef and the way they prepare things.

Re: The Food Network - 09/14/06 05:56 PM

My 5 year old won't watch TV for anything. Even cartoons that he likes, keeps his interest for about...5 minutes. However in the last 6 months he started watching the Food Network when I was watching something and is now ADDICTED!! Every night he wants to see if there are cooking shows on. He just LOVES Rachel Ray, she does have some really good ideas and they are all so fast!! Emeril, the Italian cook lady, Bobby Flay...any of them. It is the only thing I have found in 5 years that will keep him sitting still in the house for over 10 minutes!

Re: The Food Network - 09/14/06 06:04 PM

Well it was an off handed statement. I would consider her fat (in my book), but if she was not so irritating I would not even mention it. I think the last thing Rachel needs is more food.

You go ahead and keep your skin and bones size 0 women. I personally think she's beautiful, and far from "fat'. She's very attractive and of average size.

I will thank you. It never hurt anyone to get out and run, keep in shape, and not throw every tidbit of food into your face (not your face - its a figure of speaking).

Re: The Food Network - 09/14/06 06:12 PM

I literally watch the food network EVERYDAY! Rachel Ray is my favorite! Also, Semi-Homeade with Sandra Lee is great. I am a newlywed so i have been watching trying to learn how to cook! Its now football season and the other day Sandra Lee made Teryaki Drummettes and i cooked them for my husband during the Ole Miss football game and now He asks for them before every game and the guys just eat them up!! I love the food network!

Re: The Food Network - 09/14/06 06:12 PM

I think Rachael is very pretty and I like her personality.
My daughter watches all those shows. She loves them. I bought her Rachael Rays' 30 min cookbook last Christmas and she has cooked some stuff out of it. I'm just a basic cook (when I want to ) and I'm glad my daughter likes to cook and try new dishes. So, those shows have been good to her and has taught her alot of things.

Re: The Food Network - 09/14/06 06:20 PM

Rachal woould lick a frog, her eyes would get all big, a grin would form on her face. "Positively scrumtions". "Probably the best thing I have tasted in some time." Its just irritating, not everything is good.

Shemp, she probably isnt going to cook something she doesnt like! She has played around with recipes to make them good..

I am referring to her show where she would eat for two days for under $40. She would be eating casino cookies and talking them up. It was irritating. She would talk up a tootsie roll.

Re: The Food Network - 09/14/06 06:53 PM

I have to somewhat agree with Shemp on Rachel Ray. Although I love her shows (30 Minute Meals and $40 a Day) she does seem to "love" everything she tries. She is very passionate about cooking though so I forgive her for that.

Paula Deen is my next favorite. I just love her and her comfort food! Her boys are cute too!

I also like the new show with Bobby Flay called Throw Down as well as the Iron Chef.

Did anyone watch the recent series with Alton Brown about foods on the road? I thought that was very interesting.
Posted By: Sing A Little

Re: The Food Network - 09/14/06 07:24 PM

Shemp, it's actually one day for $40, and I think that she is just excited about food. She has given some pretty good tips on that show that I used on my last vacation.

We caught a few of the Feasting on Asphalt episodes with Alton Brown, they were good. We've also been watching that new show, Ace of cakes. It's amazing what they can make with some cake and rice crispies.

Well, I have to say that Giada DeLaurentis (known in my household as TSB), Bobby Flay and Ina Garten had such ,er, authentic-looking "o" faces that if you didn't know them, you'd have assigned them to the wrong network.

Giada. When DQ called her a lollipop, I burst out laughing. Thinking of lollipop made me think of another descriptive phrase, that does not bear repeating on BOL, that would also apply to Giada.

OK, you'll have to fill in the first word yourself (it starts with a "T", though), but the last 3 words are "on a stick".

I really enjoy the Food Network, too. Has anyone watched The Take Home Chef on TLC? I thought it was a goofy idea, when I first saw the promo ads. But I think it's entertaining and every once in awhile Curtis, the chef, has some good cooking tips.
Posted By: Beagles22

Re: The Food Network - 09/14/06 09:52 PM

I like the Take Home Chef. It is kind of cute. Not as detailed on the procedure as most of the stuff on the Food Network but he gives some good ideas. My biggest problem is the amount of TIME they invest in every day meals on some of the shows. I don't have that kind of time or energy by the time I am done with my job, my hubby and my 5 year old. I am quite creative when it comes to cooking, but time is always an issue.
Posted By: Sing A Little

Re: The Food Network - 09/14/06 10:00 PM

I agree with you BQ, the time they put in is a bit much for everyday. My husband and I have been cooking a few days a week and then we have the leftovers the rest of the week. We save the more elaborate meals for the weekends when we have more time. We've been trying new dishes off the Food Network website.

I too love this channel. I like Iron Chef (Mario), the cake bake-offs where they decorate these elaborate cakes, love Rachel Ray's shows, Paula Deen, but Unwrapped is my all time favorite. It is so cool how they show these companies make their food, and ship it. My youngest loves this show and we will watch it together. I could watch this channel all day long. Alton Brown is quite entertaining. LOL

Taste of America is a good show to watch too, but it is on TLC. Tasty Travels is a good one too.

I watch the food network a lot. My husband doesn't watch it but he always asks me what Rachel is cooking :-). I like 30 minute meals, $40 a day, unwrapped, the secret life of, iron chef, and semi-homemade. I cannot stand the barefoot contessa. She kind of grosses me out.

Re: The Food Network - 09/15/06 05:17 PM

Love The Food Network! May sound strange coming from someone who has recently lost a lot of weight, but I love watching them cook. It may be that I don't find what they cook all that appetizing most of the time. I enjoy learning the techniques and use them in some of my healthy cooking.

Has anyone notice that Paula Dean is always licking her fingers (and spoons) when she cooks and then goes right on using them without washing?

I didn't see Bobby's wire cook for him, but she is gorgeous. She played an attorney on Law and Order for a few years.

I sprinkle Emeril's Essence (the Cajun type mix) on chicken and cook it on my George foreman grill. Then I slice it really thin and put it on top of the Alfredo. The mix of the creamy sauce and spicy chicken is wonderful!

That cereal competition should be good, it's got the Ace of Cakes guy competing. What these people can do with food is amazing. I caught a commercial for that show with the Police Officer, it looks like it could be good. The next Throwdown should be fun, Bobby is going to be bartending and doing the "flair" (throwing bottles, etc.) against a local guy here in Vegas.

Even though the cakes must be totally edible, I have heard that you dont really want to eat the fondant stuff they use b/c it tastes terrible. But I wouldnt mind someone eating it if I won $50,000 for it.
Posted By: Sing A Little

Re: The Food Network - 09/20/06 03:25 PM

I heard that about fondant too, strange how so many bakers use something that doesn't take good. I caught a re-run of an Ace of Cakes episode the other day, they made 2 pink flamingos for a zoo event. Flamingos cakes! They looked amazing. The only hitch was they didn't measure how tall the flamingos were, so they had to sit down and hold them in the van at an angle in order to deliver them.

I have made fondant before and it's just kinds bland.

Re: The Food Network - 09/20/06 04:06 PM

Yes, fondant is really just a filler that helps give support to whatever food you're making, doesn't really taste like much other than what you add to it.

My dad used to make chocolate covered fondant eggs with nuts and cherries and such. I never ate them, but everyone else loved them.

My daughter loves Paula Deen. For her high school graduation this summer I took her to Savannah. We ate at both of Paula's restaurants (YUMMY!) and took a Paula Deen tour where they drive you around and show you places she's visited on the show (cookie factory, produce market) and places she has lived. It was a really fun trip, but we were about "Paula'd" out by the time we got home!

For some reason I don't really care for Paula Dean. I do enjoy the show that her sons do though, it's called Road Tasted.

Re: The Food Network - 10/06/06 09:26 PM

Whats the saying...never trust a skinny cook?
That would throw out lollypop head, and make Rachel Ray and The Barefoot Contesta Queen Bees!! (Hey some guys can handle a little junk in the trunk)

The Barefoot Contessa is the real thing, she just does not have that "TV" personality...her cookbooks are fabulous I refer to them often.

Rachel Ray is allright, her cook books are kinda dumb. She will have three recipes exactly the same but one has BBQ sauce on it, The next Teriaki, and the next cheese...but its the same basic recipe!! I can do that one on my own!

I love food, I love to cook so the food channel is fun for me to watch and get tips. I cook for my family every stinkin week night, so I need a good supply of recipes.Sometimes I even make dessert, even if its just Brownies, with a scoop of ice cream and a dollop of whip cream...

Lets just say you can trust me!! (Back that thing up...oh yeaaa).

Re: The Food Network - 11/03/06 10:24 PM

Off the top of my head

2 packages chopped frozen spinach, defrosted in microwave
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, 2 turns of the pan
4-6 cloves garlic, finely chopped
2 cans quartered artichokes in water, drained well
Salt and pepper
White Sauce:
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups vegetable or chicken stock
1/2 cup cream or half-and-half
1/2 cup grated Parmigiano-Reggiano, a couple of handfuls
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, freshly grated
Salt and black pepper
1 sack, 2 cups grated provolone or Italian 4 Cheese Blend, from dairy aisle, 10 ounces
1 large package (marked "Family Size") fresh ravioli, such as Contadina brand, 24 to 28 ounces, or choose your favorite filling, such as wild mushroom or 4 cheese
1 pound thin asparagus spears, trimmed of tough ends

Bring a pot of water to boil for ravioli.
While water comes to a boil, drain defrosted frozen chopped spinach by wringing it dry in a kitchen towel, working over a garbage bowl or your sink. Heat a medium skillet over medium heat. Add extra-virgin olive oil, 2 tablespoons or 2 turns of the pan, and the garlic. Saute garlic in oil 1 minute, then sprinkle spinach into the garlic oil. Add artichoke heart pieces to the pan and turn to combine and heat through. Season vegetables with and remove from heat to a bowl. Place skillet back on the heat and melt butter. Whisk flour into butter and cook 1 to 2 minutes. Whisk stock into flour and butter and let it bubble. Whisk in cream and Parmesan. Season sauce with nutmeg, salt and pepper and thicken 1 to 2 minutes.

Preheat broiler to high. Set rack between middle of oven groove and top rack groove, about 8 inches from heat.

When water boils, salt water, add ravioli and cook 4 to 5 minutes. Ravioli should be less than al dente, still a bit chewy -- it will continue cooking when combined with sauce and vegetables. Place a colander over ravioli as it cooks and add asparagus to it. Cut thin, trimmed asparagus into 2-inch pieces on an angle. Steam the chopped asparagus while pasta cooks, 2 to 3 minutes, until just fork-tender, but still green. Remove asparagus and add to bowl with spinach and artichokes. Place colander in your sink and drain ravioli.

Drizzle a touch of extra virgin olive oil onto the bottom of a medium oval casserole or a rectangular baking dish and brush pan to coat evenly. Arrange a layer using 1/2 of cooked ravioli in the dish. Layer 1/2 of the cooked vegetables over the ravioli. Next, add a few ladles of sauce, then vegetables, then top casserole with the last of the ravioli. Dot top of "lasagna" with any remaining sauce and cover liberally with grated provolone or 4 cheese blend. Brown cheese 8 inches from broiler, 5 minutes.

Paula Deen has a really good and super easy recipe for divinity and you can get the recipe on foodnetwork.com. It is called Mama's Divinity. I have had trouble in the past getting my divinity to come out decent but have had no troubles at all with this recipe.
Posted By: Bagweaver

Re: The Food Network - 12/11/06 08:05 PM

My mother and grandmother would divide their divinity into three batches after they made it. They would add red food coloring to one batch and green to another batch. When they put it on a platter the pink, green and white were very pretty.

Re: The Food Network - 12/11/06 08:06 PM

Posted By: Bagweaver

Re: The Food Network - 12/11/06 08:42 PM

The main ingredients are sugar, corn syrup and egg whites. It's a lot like "forgotten cookies" only softer. If you go to the Food Network web site for Paula's recipe, there is a picture on her recipe.

As long as my grandmother was alive I didn't have to try to make it. Then when she passed away many years ago, my mother started making it every year. I've never tried making it. I have enough trouble with fudge, but I'd like to try it some day.

Re: The Food Network - 01/04/07 02:06 AM

Funny this should come up again today. This is MSN's lead story tonight.

If you're serious about trying foodtv recipes, start slowly.

Emeril is a fabulous cook and I've had the opportunity to dine at his flagship restaurant in the Warehouse district in New Orleans a number of times...including long before he bammed! his way to fame. But his recipes work best when followed to the letter and they're not beginner level cooking.

Rachel Ray's recipes tend to be less involved because she's not a trained chef. She considers herself a cook and lots of her stuff is easier for a normal cook to replicate. Paula Dean does a lot of down home cooking too but watch out for the calories and cholesterol.

The way the recipes are rated on the foodtv site really helps you pick and choose your way to an attainable goal. The most important part of cooking is being able to eat and enjoy your efforts! Bon Apetite!

Re: The Food Network - 01/04/07 04:14 AM

My dad was French and a chef. I have many of his recipe's and I must admit that I'm a pretty good cook, notice, not a chef. But I have to say that my mom was the better cook. I do have some fancy tastes, but I like the food network. My dad never had cable and did'nt ever see these people that I'm sure he would have thought were idiots. We ate pretty simple foods, but my favorite was broiled lobster. I grew up playing with the lobster before we killed it, never liked it "theradour, newbergh", or any other way. To this day it must be steamed or broiled. Oh forgot to say that he moved to Maine and we had lobster every Friday. I do do a Prime Rib on holidays that my older brothers love, along with desert. They are very impressed with my cooking skills, other than that, in my opinion,I stink.

Re: The Food Network - 01/04/07 02:29 PM

I bought a Food Network cookbook with recipes from all the network stars. I must say that I would only attempt recipes from Rachael Ray or Paula Deen. Many of the ingredients for the other chefs I would probably have to special order. Besides the fact that I probably couldn't get anyone to eat the fancy smancy stuff anyway!

Re: The Food Network - 01/04/07 02:57 PM

I have always cooked from the time I was 12. I even cooked and baked in my mothers Tea Room several years ago. But I have to tell you, last year, I went out and bought a Better Homes and Garden cookbook. When I got home, my husband started looking at the cookbook and decided it should not be that hard to do this, as he has always wanted to cook, but never had the opportunity, he always worked on the road, (after an accident he became disabled). Anyway, he now does the majority of the cooking. And follows receipts to the letter.
Posted By: RR Jen

Re: The Food Network - 01/04/07 03:14 PM

That's kind of funny Nascar. My boyfriend's never been much of a cook, his mom isn't and his ex-wife couldn't cook anything that didn't come out of a box.

I'm one of the better cooks in my family (grandma's the best) and really enjoy it. Once he got use to me cooking he started taking an interest. He's a very methodical person and likes to understand "why" things work...experimenting with cooking is turning out to be fun for him. We canned two different versions of salsa late last summer and more recently he decided that he liked my guacamole enough that he wanted to make it himself. He was so cute...he called me while he was in the store and asked where all the ingredients were, I swear we were on the phone for 15 mintues. He followed my instructions to the letter and said it turned out great.

Re: The Food Network - 01/04/07 03:27 PM

I have always had the ability to cook thanks to my mom, but this past spring I started cooking dinner for my family every night. It has kind of been an extension of the new healthy eating plan I began last year. I have really enjoyed developing and refining different recipes - making them healthy and tasty. It's amazing how your taste buds change and even someone who is knocking on the door of 40 can discover that they like foods that they had never liked before.
Posted By: Nascar

Re: The Food Network - 01/04/07 03:30 PM

It is amazing how much time you and your spouse or boyfriend can spend together doing this. And it has definately brought us closer together, and even helped our children. Our oldest son helps his wife cook now, our middle son is learning to cook and so is his girlfriend. I guess the one comment the boys have made that really melts my heart is that they never remember there dad being so happy and having so much fun in the kitchen or in the house with there mom as he does with me.8 wonderful years and counting...

Re: The Food Network - 01/04/07 05:09 PM

I started cooking at 9, on my own using my moms "Better Homes and Gardens" cookbook. I come from a mexican family, who ate pretty much 75% mexican meals. When *I* made dinner we would have Stuffed chicken breasts wrapped in bacon with a side of Potatoes a'graten. My mom was so supportive, I would make my shopping list and she would take me to the store...my dad loved it, as he was a "cook/chef" at a local High End Hotel.

Now I love diving into complicated recipes (Weekends only when I have the time) The rule of thuumb is the less ingrediants you have the easier it is (usually). I love buying all the spices and weird ingrediants. I just wish I had the money for all the fancy cookware I need. MY double broiler is a little pan inside a bigger pan filled with water. My Steamer is a Pie pan I poked holes in and put on top of a big pot. I DID buy a nice set of Hinkle Knives!! I have one BIG pan that is my Wok, Deep Fryer, saute pan, sauce pan, crepe pan etc...

Favorite magazines to cook out of : Cooking Light, Bon Appettit, Gourmet...I also use the FoodNetwork site if I need a BBQ sauce recipe or forget the measurments for a Picatta sauce...

Re: The Food Network - 01/04/07 05:37 PM

Ina Garten has some really great homey recipes that are fairly simple too...her roasted chicken , her macaroons...just have to poke about her recipes a bit to get there.

Also Giada has a great tiramisu that is actually fairly simple, yet one of the best I ever made.

Paula's stuff is great too...if you do not mind investing in a dairy farm in order to afford all of the butter!

Semi-homemade...not overly impressed with...i think she dips into her cocktails a bit too much before she starts cooking and creating her recipes!
Posted By: CAWorkingGirl

Re: The Food Network - 01/04/07 05:47 PM

Ina has the most awesome Macaroni and Cheese recipe. I also found her recipes to be very "basic home cooking" type of food. I use her books all the time. Have you seen her recipe for homemade marshmellows!! I am going to try them this summer, put them in a ziplock and take them camping for our smores!!

Thats funny about semi-homemade...I might get the book only because its at Costco, so even if its crappy I only spent $9.95.

I always find it hilarious when some "Groumet chef" has some "gourmet Tip" they share with you.....and its something my old mexican mom has been doing forever!! Like adding sugar to marinara sauce to cut the acid...or adding a drop of Oil to boiling noodles so they don't stick together. I just thought stuff like that was common knowledge.

I said the same thing about her to my wife just a few days ago! That woman sure loves her cocktails. Also, who dresses like that to cook? If I'm dressed that well, I'm going out to eat. I caught her show where she was grilling on the beach in her swimsuit - I had thought I stumbled on one of those "After Dark" channels.......

Re: The Food Network - 01/04/07 05:56 PM

It's funny that you mention the cocktails on Semi-Homemade. My husband and I are convinced that Sandra Lee is an alcoholic. She makes at least one cocktail every show, and she gets so excited when she says, "Cocktail time!"

Re: The Food Network - 01/04/07 06:05 PM

Well she is a Wisconsin native...and we do enjoy our cocktails!

My grandmother always had her green mug that held two cans of Old Style next to her whenever she baked....which was like all the time.

I'll admit when I did my Christmas baking this year, I usually had a glass of wine or a old fashioned within my reach.

Re: The Food Network - 01/04/07 06:11 PM

I think semi-homemade is just awful, all that crap she uses is fake and high in sodium. Blech! That one should stick to her "tablescapes"... leave the cooking to the pros.

I make up so many recipes, variations on other recipes...I would love to write a cookbook.

I love to eat something at a restaurant then go home and try to re-create it.

I do that too, my ex used to freak out (happily) when I recreated something he liked at a restaurant and it was exactly as he remembered it...

Re: The Food Network - 01/04/07 11:15 PM

From the site:

Tiered cakes start at $6 a slice, and average $8-$11/serving. Smaller cakes start at $200. Pricing is determined on a cake-by-cake basis, by the complexity of the design.

$125 per hour delivery charge.

Smaller cakes start at $200? My whole wedding cake (10 tiers!!!) was $500. Wow!

Re: The Food Network - 01/06/07 07:28 PM

I have some pesto in my freezer. It is really a snap to make if you have a food processor:

1 large bunchh of basil, washed and stems removed
3 large cloves of garlic
1/2 cup of pine nuts or walnuts, toasted
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
1/2 cup real parmigiano reggiano, grated

Throw everything in the food processor and process until a thick puree forms.

Boil your pasta until al dente, saving some of the cooking oil. Toss pasta, cooking water, 2 tbls butter and some salt and pepper together.
Serve with more parmigiano reggiano.

THANK YOU, JLJ!!! I've never been able to figure out what to do with the darn short ribs I get everytime we buy half a cow. This recipe sounds good and it's fairly easy too.

Before anyone jumps in and gives me grief about half a cow...up here you can buy the best beef if you know a farmer who raises them. We split a cow with another family about twice a year. You pay a single per pound price no matter what the cut. Not only is it MUCH cheaper, you cannot believe the difference in taste. The only drawback to date had been what to do with the shortribs!

Truff, here is a great super-easy recipe for the short ribs. Adapted from the NY Times cookbook:

Deviled Short Ribs

4 lbs beef short ribs, cut into 3-4 in. pieces...
Mix in a large ziploc:
2 cloves chopped garlic
1/2 onion, chopped
3 heaping tbls coarse mustard
1 tbls sugar
2 tbls good chili powder (NOT powdered chili pepper!)
3 tbls lemon juice
1/4 cup olive oil
1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp salt

Mix in baggie, place short ribs in bag and seal. Massage the baggie until the meat is thoroughly covered in the marinade, marinate over night.

Preheat oven to 325; place ribs and marinade into a non reactive baking pan, cover with foil and bake for 1 1/2 hours, remove foil and bake for 1 more hour, basting with the pan drippings.

They are absolutely awesome.

Re: The Food Network - 02/12/07 08:12 PM

Ok, I was pretty amazed at the Chocolate Challenge that they had on this weekend. I've made some basic candy before, but that was just plain crazy.

I also caught more of an episode of Ace of Cakes, they made a rat cake on a man hole cover...for a wedding? It looked pretty good, but I don't know if I'd be able to cut into the rat and eat a piece.
Posted By: RR Jen

Re: The Food Network - 02/12/07 08:15 PM

No...I watched quite a bit of it this weekend. I missed the rat, but saw the previews. ICK!!

Did you see the cake challenge? They had to make a wedding cake (decorate it in front of the tv cameras in something crazy like 6 hours) and the theme was the four seasons. They had to show 3 of the four seasons. It was amazing...the flowers were so lifelike.

I also saw a lot of the chocolate 'stuff' and ended up making chocolate covered pretzels (complete with valentines inspired sprinkles) and marshmallows covered in chocolate and then rolled in crushed pecans. OMG they were to die for.

I love covering goodies in chocolate, I have one of those chocolate crock pot things, and I bought a chocolate foundtain last year.

The fountain was a huge hit at a party we had, we covered pretzels, marshmallows, graham crackers, and a whole bunch of fruit. Everyone turned into a kid and began grabbing goodies to dip! If you get a small one, the fountains are only about $40, and worth it if you entertain a lot.

Re: The Food Network - 02/12/07 09:25 PM

I'm struggling with what to make Wednesday night. I've invited my boyfriend over to have supper with me and my kids. I was originally going to try Giada's Chicken Stew (one pot, how easy!) but this weekend the boyfriend and I saw Guy's Pepperoni Lasagna and he asked me to make it some time. It's more work and I think the kids will eat it...but really liked the idea of the chicken stew being so easy. I'm also making my yummy chocolate cake with chocolate frosting...but I can do it the night before.

Has anyone tried the stew or lasagna?
Posted By: Truffle Royale

Re: The Food Network - 02/12/07 10:06 PM

Go with the stew for Wednesday night and give him a card with a ticket inside good to redeem for the lasagna...on a weekend night. Lasagna is a bit of work and not something you want to make on a weeknight when you've got hungry kids waiting.

Hint: Make a double batch of the lasagna and freeze it in a throw-away pan so next time he wants it on a Wednesday you can thaw and cook it.

Re: The Food Network - 02/12/07 11:09 PM

I don't know what to make on Wednesday either. My husband goes to school and works full time, and Wednesdays are particularly bad this semester. Maybe I'll follow Truffle's advice and do something easy on Wed. and save a nice dinner for the weekend.

Giada did some lasgana roll-ups yesterday that looked really good and relatively easy too. Of course, I'm going to add some portabella mushrooms to them but anyway, the whole meal she prepared looked yummy and relatively easy.

I would encourage you to cook often and not feel bound to follow recipes to the letter. Read a lot of recipes and columns and pay particular attention to the tips and reasons the authors put in. The advice is more valuable than the actual amount of sugar in a recipe. Pretty soon you'll develop a feel for it and then the fun will begin.

I watched Rachel Ray and Bobby Flay's Chefography specials on Sunday. It's kind of neat to see where they came from and what their influences were. Rachel grew up in restaurants as a child and seemed to always be the "Overachiever" while Bobby dropped out of high school and only got interested in cooking when his father made him get a job at a restaurant.

I also enjoyed the behind the scenes look at the shows last night.

Gotta love the Food Network!

I watched a few good shows over the weekend. There was a great episode of Unwrapped that was all about old time favorite candies.

There was a rerun of a challenge that was tandem cake decorating, 2 complete strangers making and decorating an elaborate cake without being able to talk to each other inbetween shifts...it was very interesting to see how they adapted.

I am very envious of all of you, I do not get the food channel. My son who is a Jr at College watches it all the time (especially Rachel Ray), and loves what he learns, he is always telling me about them.

After watching Sandra Lee's Chefogrophy, I have a new appreciation for her. I never really cared for her or her show, but she really has worked hard for everything she has and led a really hard life as a child.

I have Bobby Flay's taped, but I haven't watched it yet.

We've really been cooking a lot more since we've been watching the Food Network. Their enthusiasm for cooking is contagious!

My husband always makes fun of Sandra Lee because she makes a cocktail with just about every meal.

I haven't tried any of her recipes yet, but there are a few I wouldn't mind checking out.

Music Mom, you should check out the Food Network website. There are lots of great tips and recipes for you to enjoy.

She is a Wisconsin native...it goes along with the territory.

Did anyone watch the cheesecake throwdown last night? If you did, can you please tell me who won? I feel asleep right after Bobby suprised Alan from Juniors.

Re: The Food Network - 04/06/07 04:02 PM

Bobby won. Alan chose to put his chocolate cheesecake up and the judges said that the chocolate overpowered the cheesecake and Bobby edged him out.

Re: The Food Network - 04/06/07 04:32 PM

Wow, I am suprised. I have heard some great things about Juniors cheesecake, but I haven't tried one yet.

If I ever get to NY I am probably going to gain 20 lbs, there are so many great places there that I'd like to try.

Hey, did you guys hear Giada's having a baby girl come April? And of course, she's craving pasta!

Re: The Food Network - 11/05/07 09:22 PM

I just read that this morning, that is so great for her! Maybe we'll get lots of new pasta recipes over the next couple of months.

Is anyone watching The Next Iron Chef? My hubby and I love Iron Chef, and have been watching this new series. We're thinking that John Besh is going to win...any thoughts?

John Besh makes it to the top two... I dont know if he wins or not. A friend of mine works at one of his restaraunts down here... he is kind of a tool though

Your friend or Besh?

I'm not sure which one I think should win. Besh is classier and has more experience. The other guy seems better at experimenting and going out on a limb. His drinks would do well in Iron Chef competition.

actually, both!!!

Re: The Food Network - 11/05/07 09:35 PM

Your friend is a tool? I guess since you said "kind of" that's ok.

I like Chef Besh and Chef Symon, but I think Besh will really round out the Iron Chef group. Symon has the same Greek background just like Chef Cora, but Chef Besh has that whole French/New Orleans vibe.

Ok, is anyone else still watching the Food Network? I still enjoy watching several shows, though I haven't really cooked much lately.

How about the Gourmet Next Store? I didn't think I would like Amy's show, but it's not too bad.

Still watch it religiously but I have my favorites.

My most fav is coming on Saturday morning

Jamie Oliver's
Jamie at Home! stoke to see him again!

Re: The Food Network - 01/17/08 09:15 PM

I just saw an episode of Iron Chef with him the other day.

I was a little sad to see Emeril go, but he has a long run.

I still watch. I enjoy the Barefoot Contessa, Paula and sometimes I can even handle Giada.

Re: The Food Network - 01/17/08 09:20 PM

I love to watch Paula Deen. She is so southern it cracks me up. And the recipes that Giada has on her show usually turn out pretty well if you try them at home.

Re: The Food Network - 01/17/08 09:29 PM

I agree, I've tried several of Giada's recipes and been very pleased.

Re: The Food Network - 01/17/08 09:30 PM

there's a network devoted to food? how cool is that?

Oh sure, that sounds great in theory.

But when you break it down and realize it's all poop, then how cool is it?

buzz kill.

Re: The Food Network - 01/17/08 09:32 PM

Well, we all have to eat Peepers, we may as well enjoy it.

Has anyone tried Giada's lemon pasta? I want to try it, but I am also a little scared. LOL

Re: The Food Network - 01/17/08 09:34 PM

I haven't tried that one, but I've been very pleased with all of her recipes I've tried so far. I wouldn't be scared.

Ok, maybe I should have phrased that differently. LOL

Re: The Food Network - 01/17/08 11:39 PM

There are a few recipes that I would really like to try, most of them are from Alton Brown and Giada.

Re: The Food Network - 01/18/08 03:44 AM

I can only take so much Alton Brown and his cast of characters. He does give some interesting info, but his shows are a little over the top.

But because of the Food Network, I know what an "amuse bouche" is - and it's so fun to go to a restaurant that has them!!

Re: The Food Network - 01/18/08 04:11 PM

I like the Fine Living Channel. It's a little cooking, a little travel, a little shopping. I find it very relaxing.

Re: The Food Network - 01/18/08 04:28 PM

Alton Brown does have a crazy cast of characters, but I've learned to look past the cheesy and get to the recipes. My husband loves Alton and his scientific approach to food. As long as it gets him cooking...I'm good!

Giada has recipes? I've watched the show a few times, and I can honestly say I've never paid attention to what she was cooking!

I love Rachel Ray's recipes, and listening to the older southern woman who's name is escaping me cook!

Re: The Food Network - 01/18/08 05:10 PM

Yes Giada has recipes, and some of them are pretty good. I haven't tried any of Rachel's recipes, but I do enjoy her show sometimes.

I think you're probably talking about Paula Dean, she is very Southern and loves butter. LOL

Re: The Food Network - 01/18/08 05:17 PM

Paula Dean definitely does NOT do light cooking! I use her Mamas Divinity recipe every Christmas. It is wonderful.

Thank you, it is Paula Dean. I just love listening to her talk. Her food is definately fattening, and outside my low carb/low fat diabetic diet, but she's so darned amusing.

Why do you like listening to her talk??? She sounds like everybody around here, including me. Of course, we're from the same part of GA!
