Large currency transaction explanation

I've had reluctance by some employees to inquire with a customer for an explanation on a large currency transaction because they don't want to upset the customer or risk losing their business. Even though we have discussed this should be done in a non threatening way, are there any suggestions to give to front line staff of how this can be done without putting them or the customer in an uncomfortable situation?
