Switching CD interest pay from checks

Simple question I'm doubting myself on - We have just a handful of CDs that we mail interest payment checks to. Can we change them to auto deposit prior to maturity rather than mailing paper checks? Or do we have to wait until maturity/renewal to change that part of the agreement? Can we request them to voluntarily change it - advantages being faster receipt of funds and no risk of "lost in the mail"?
