ACH Returned as NSF if made Deposit Online?

Answered by:

Question:
We post ACH at 6:00 a.m. if a customer's ACH is negative it will be returned. My question involves when the customer makes an online deposit prior to the item actually being returned. The money is then available in the account to pay the item. Are we still able to return it NSF even though a deposit has been made into the account?
Answer:

In general, your are only required to check a customer's balance once to determine whether to pay or return an item. I you check at 9:30 a.m. and the account is overdraft due to an ACH debit that posted the previous banking day, you can return that ACH debit for insufficient funds, even if, after you have checked the balance and made the decision to return the item, the customer makes a deposit.
