ATM Security Evaluation

Answered by:

Question:
Please let us know what is required for an ATM security evaluation. Are there specific things we should include or expect in such an evaluation?
Answer:

Different state laws apply here. As an example, you can review:

  • California Financial Code, Section 13020
  • Florida, Banks and Banking Title 38 Section 655.960 - 655.965
  • New York ATM Safety Act, Banking Law Article II-AA
  • Texas Finance Code - Section 59.305. Lighting Required

Absent specific requirements, we would refer you to best practices you can adopt in whole or in part from this Council of State Governments document, starting on page 16.

Essentially, during daylight and night time hours, you want to ensure there is adequate lighting, parking, with no obstructions to allow a robber to hide. You always want skimming devices to be looked for, and cleanliness as well as signage. Don't forget to consider that this is for your customers' safety as well as the safety of employees who maintain and load the machine.

Much of the risk associated with ATMs is that of a customer being harmed. For this reason, knowing the crime statistics of the area is also to your advantage.
