Must we go through the formalities of an investigation and document what we’ve done such as paying provisional credit on claims that were made timely?

Answer:

Basically, yes. You do have an option of just paying a claim and skipping the investigation. There are elements of an investigation you don’t want to skip so you document your efforts and be thorough. These are points important to later reviews and disputes.
