Boyfriend signs Girlfriend's Checks: Forgery?

Answered by:

Question:
We have a case where a girlfriend has lived with her boyfriend for eighteen months. He signed her name to the checks to pay rent and bills. Has the girlfriend ratified this type of technical forgery?
Answer:

I am not aware of any bright line definition of ratification. However, it's usually very hard to press a forgery case against anyone when you have benefited from the transactions. In this case, unless the bills the boyfriend paid were his own individual obligations, I don't think the young lady has a case to press against anyone.
