Branch Key Audits

Answered by:

Question:
How extensive should branch key audits be? Just exterior doors, or all employee-held keys and other critical equipment?
Answer:

I would want to know who has access to your facilities so you should assign a key coordinator at each branch who is responsible for who has access to the building. I am not sure what you would consider “other critical equipment,” but if it is something like access to a cash area or negotiable instruments, you have to know who has access. I wouldn't be concerned as one bank was about desk keys. The one thing I would recommend is purchasing key fobs to replace the keys. Key fobs can grant access to any area you want the holder to have and even block them from entering your bank until a predesignated time. For example, tellers may not enter before 8 a.m. so that, if taken hostage, the fobs are worthless to use to break into the bank before opening hours. If you have an employee who quits or is released, you can remove the permissions for that key fob to be used at any location.
