Cash SSI Check Rep Payee if Only Have Personal?

Answered by:

Can you cash a SSI check made payable to a rep payee for a beneficiary if they don't have an account styled that way? The rep payee has a personal account. Would you have chargeback rights against the rep payee?

Can you cash such a check? Yes. SHOULD you cash such a check? You will be on notice of a potetnial breach of fiduciary duty and could be liable if Social Security determines that the rep payee misused the funds.

The check should be properly deposited into a Rep Payee account.
